They are awesome habits! I've learned to shop local, learned to shop around the deals and hunt for sales. I have not stepped foot in Loblaws anything and we've saved soo much money in the long run.
Connected with local farmers and entrepreneurs for other products.
I have zero interest in ever going back to "normal" shopping.
This is brilliant and hopefully people don't just opt to go to the closest store to get something due to convenience!
These corps have used that to their advantage by reducing competition and increasing profits - and people just say oh it's just a couple of bucks, whatever.
Hopefully, this change will have a trickle down effect on shopping habits and eventually force some competition to bring pricing down.
The main thing will be if it’s not too much of a hassle travel/time wise. I’m basically done with them and have my alternatives already (only down to 2-3 things we haven’t found substitutes for just yet). But for others, I can see it being a problem.
The CEO of Loblaws, Per Bank issued a statement to staff, that opened with: “we have a saying called Nok er Nok, which means enough is enough…”
And indeed enough IS enough. From Loblaws and the other oligarchies. He handed us a delightful slogan and it’s ours now
I'm no longer shopping Loblaws and shoppers drug mart. Went shopping at Walmart in Brockville a much further drive than normal where we mostly do our grocery shopping in Prescott. Our groceries costed just a tad over 100.00. We felt it was worth it..
I'm feeling pretty old these days. Things have come full circle, I remember when Walmart first came to Canada and they were enemy number one. Many a small business died at the feet of the Walton empire. Now they are a beacon of low prices in this whole crappy situation.
It was.
I’m sorry Walmart was your only other option.
Canadian lawmakers need to step up and create better conditions for new market participants and meaningful competition, small and large.
Funny thing about that is, Walmart shows us that big conglomerate oligarchs can keep prices low. They are actually proving our point, strange as it is.
He basically said "Nok er Nok" which means enough is enough to whine that people keep blaming Loblaws for the high grocery prices. It's so ironic and shows how tone deaf, out to touch, heartless (?) he is as the CEO of Loblaws in assessing why we are protesting in the first place. He obviously doesn't understand (doesn't care about) us Canadians.
Per Bank (the actual name of Loblaws CEO) is from Denmark and Nok Er Nok is Dutch for "Enough is enough". He released a statement the other day explaining his position and used this term which was immediately adopted by the movement.
The average spent in Canada per year for a family of 4 is $16,288.41 . Multiply that by even only the number of members of this sub. Boy that's gonna hurt ...$977 million loss. And that's not even counting all the boycotters that are not members of this sub. I need to go to Food Basics and stock up on popcorn...
And Charlie boi has the gall to say it won’t make a difference. I know just myself and my partner will cost them thousands from our prescriptions alone.
But there are going to be a large number of people that transfer their prescriptions to Walmart, fresco or rexall. That’s going to really hurt their margins and could be even more costly.
Family of three and actively stopped going to Loblaws. I tracked my food spend and it averages $500-600/month. Don’t have to hold back much. Definitely less than before.
That's only if it's a family. I'm a single person who spends like 200-300 on groceries each month. I bet plenty of the people boycotting aren't families. The people I know who are boycotting are single individuals(anecdotal ofc)
Yeah I think your total per month is a bit low for a single person but even then I don't spend more than 5k a year on groceries individually. I also have never shopped at Loblaws/superstore/etc as my primary though. So I'm in full support of the boycott, and trying to fully avoid SDM since that's the only one I actively use but I don't think I'll help that much.
I can shop at other grocers, local ones even. How do I do the same for cell phone providers when the big ones pretty much own the entire market. Do I go without a phone?
It sucks we had that chance and the government squashed it. Wind and I think Mobilicity came and went. :/ There's literally no option unless the government stepped in which ... they won't.
Telecommunications is a national security issue. A democratic government that serves the people SHOULD step in on issues of national security such as food security and communication infrastructure.
I am looking hard at the legitimacy of our government. Am I the only one?
How about TekSavvy then. Home grown company that entered the market to compete and offer lower prices on internet. Yet the big 3 own all the spectrum and throttle the little guy while CRTC and our gov sit on their hands.
Loblaws controls 40% of the Canadian grocery market. That’s a greater share than any of Rogers, Bell or Telus has in the mobile phone market.
If you have many grocery options, you are probably not in the majority.
You are telling me that combines, Rogers Bell and Telus own less than 40% of the telecommunications market in Canada? I don't believe that.
My post has nothing to do with grocers. I want to know how do we boycott these phone companies, when, IMO, they control the whole market in Canada
We can make it happen by boycotting ONE of the them. Let’s say Rogers. If enough Roger’s customers switch to bell then Roger’s will cry to the government to do something. That’s when the government would listen to the demands of people. Obviously this plan would need some work
We can make it happen by boycotting ONE of the them. Let’s say Rogers. If enough Roger’s customers switch to bell then Roger’s will cry to the government to do something. That’s when the government would listen to the demands of people. Obviously this plan would need some work
Why stop there? Banks, airlines, insurance companies, news media, pharmacies, department stores...Canada has become a country of oligarchs and a command economy. There is NO competition!
I want to support what I believe is fair and just. I support people, especially those with a good cause.
If you think it’s sad that’s who I am, you have bigger things to work on.
Nok er Nok means "Enough is Enough" in Denmark 🇩🇰 and Loblows CEO Per Bank who is from Denmark said it in a recent article against the boycott and Canadians complaining about food prices.
We've coopted it for the movement because we agree enough **IS** enough with high food prices so it's:
#Nok er Nok Loblows
Canadians need to eat!
Great Question By The Way ❤
Here's a fun Nok er Nok thread if you'd like to see what people are saying and participate:
https://www.reddit.com/r/loblawsisoutofcontrol/s/d96z3NQ4Si
I heard this covered on the radio this morning, 680 in toronto. They reminded everyone that no frills and shoppers are owned by Loblaws. Amazing the reach this has had!
Anyone lurking who is still on the fence, get with the program!
I walked into a No Frills about a year ago, maybe more.
Chicken dogs that were 1.99 was up to 4 bucks. Canned veggies that were 1.79 was 3.09. Salad dressing doubled. Bread massively up.
Walked out and never went back. Moved my prescriptions to a local pharmacy. Told them to cancel my Optimum card.
Glad to see many more standing up to the bullshit! Now I don't feel like a cynical old man
I’d rather a cynical old man than a foolish one. The only rights you have are the ones you stand up for. Loblaws has stolen from Canadians and taken our business for granted. Nok er nok.
May is great but we need to do this for at least 3 months. Let the impact of this show up in their next quarterly filings in full force and make shareholders realize how much the people can really fuck their investment up.
I say - do it until they go bankrupt.
Weston and other monopolies need to learn a hard lesson, that if they screw people, and people come together, they will be toast.
Per Baaaanks take this bag from me
I can't afford it anymoo-ooooaaaaooow
It's getting dark to dark to see
Feels like we're on the Boycotts doooooooaaaooowwooaah
My family spends $2000+ a month at Loblaws owned stores currently - we’re boycotting indefinitely as we have found family owned alternatives we love. Alone we don’t make a dent, but if only 50 families like ours join the boycott, it represents a $1.2M loss annually.
I am all for economic revolution. even if we don't take them down immediately, I'm happy to make their wallet smaller and smaller over time. NOK ER NOK, Canadians are not a battery for profit generation!
Nok er nok, enough is enough. This isn’t a political problem of left vs right, this is a corporate problem of unchecked greed vs human decency.
Thank god this is finally happening.
Such amazing work! My hat goes of to all of you. Organization and people who are willing to make a change.
We really can make things happen at grassroots level 💪💥
I finally stopped going to Zehrs for groceries. We make a decent amount of money but can’t justify it anymore, the prices are disgusting. Will be going to Walmart from now on (as much as that pains me)
60k on reddit is great but there's more than 60k who don't use reddit or even the internet. The profit motive on necessities has to stop.
When I moved to Canada about 12 years ago I thought it was actually pretty cool that we had nationalized corporations that paid people well. Found it when I got here that they'd all been sold off to private investors.
Turns out we ran out of milk today and I had to go to no frills (my small town has just no frills or a Sobeys which is too rich for my blood most days) got my milk, a thing or two on sale - and said goodbye by also using up all my points. From here on out I get to commute for groceries, but happy to do so to support a great movement.
Not a sub to this Reddit, but have been creepin and following the growth. Haven’t shopped at Loblaws/superstore/shoppers/etc in years, have switched to Costco and Walmart for better prices. Haven’t looked back since, but I’m rooting for y’all to make an impact. We could all use a drop in the price of this necessity we call food
Record profits by grocers during Covid and this is how they stick it to us even more - totally no Loblaws or any of the umbrella….stand up Canadians and let the government know we hate these monopolies in all retail
I’ve been boycotting them since end of last year. Customer service fist-a-cuffs and rudeness and I had had the last straw. Amazingly I’ve saved over $30-$50 per grocery trip by shopping for deals elsewhere. If anyone knows of similar frozen fruits/veggies to the PC brand I’d love to know as I haven’t found those subs quite yet. Trying out my first “odd bunch” box this weekend! May tomorrow bring some change.
Despite what the lobbyists and executives are saying to their shareholders; I was a life long patient with Shoppers. When Loblaws took over, my loyalty and trust were used and abused as they pressured healthcare professionals to upsell and to continuously increase fees.
Today I picked up my last Rx with Shoppers which was always $4.95, sometimes it would jump to $12+ “well you must have reached your maximum for insurance coverage”.
So the same thing happened today when I requested to refill my final script. This time it was $14.95. I asked why it was so much and they shrugged and said I must have reached my private insurer’s maximum.
I’m on one generic dispensed SSRI.
Standard dose of generic Duloxetine; the name brand being Cipralex which is incredibly common.
It’s only APRIL!! It’s the first month of the fiscal year yet I somehow maxed out on coverage??
Good riddance.
It’s gonna be tough for me since Shoppers is about the only store open after 6pm on Sundays but I will do my best to skip Loblaws. I saw Nesquik for $9 one day and absolutely choked. wtf? For chocolate syrup ? I stopped shopping at Superstore some years ago because of their deceptive points system. Recently shopped there because they are close to my house, but found them to be pricey. Same amount of food that I get for already too expensive at Safeway (around $350 in Manitoba) was $420 at superstore. Realized a bit later I forgot my free gift. Called and was told I had to come back the same night. I told them I had worked all day and I had to Uber home with my groceries. Can they not just allow me to come tomorrow after a good night sleep and some dinner? Finally got someone to tell me sure 👍🏽. Went to get the free gift the next day—two really fat packs of bacon! Went to make it some weeks later (I freeze a lot of packaged foods like this), and found it absolutely SPOILED. Rotten, sour and slimy! Absolutely fuck Loblaws. $14.99 for 340 grams of coffee? What the f.
I started yesterday. I drove past no frills and said goodbye lol
I'm cutting out save-on too. Ten bucks for bologna is ridiculous. That was always my cheap go-to. I darn near oopsied my pants seeing that!
I'm trying to exist on disability benefits with a medically specialized diet, and I just can't do it. With what Loblaw made in their last quarter, they could raise every disabled person on disability benefits out of poverty for years.
According to Blog.to, revenue across all Loblaw's brands during the first quarter of 2024 was $13.58 billion (up from $13 billion in Q1 2023). Profits were up 9.8%. The largest jump in sales was from online sales (up 16.1 per cent) and pharmacy and healthcare services (up 7.3 per cent).
(Am I allowed to post links to sources here? I just want to credit where I get my info.)
Good luck everyone. We can survive without them. But they can't survive without US!!!!!
I went into a suppertore on the weekend guys! Not to buy anything! I just knocked over anything I felt was overpriced till they kicked me out!
18 minutes! 12 items!
Hey Galen! Here's an easy one for you...
Please explain why your PC chips are double the price of your No Name brand chips regardless of which store I'm in.
I know they're made by the same company.
Any thoughts on shopping there but ONLY for loss leaders + high points offers? I'm curious to see if their offers change at all.
Otherwise I'll do coop, local meat store + Walmart if needed. Not sure if I'll get to Costco this month.
And that's just members of the sub.
I'm convinced Canada wide the number of people onboard with the boycott is in the hundreds of thousands.
Like, members of my family who are chronically offline are onboard with it. I can the the only one.
Isn’t independent part of these companies? I want to participate but that’s the only grocery store in this town. I can try to drive an hour away instead sometimes I guess like for the full grocery runs
I was a regular Loblaws customer. Completely stopped going to anything Loblaws about a year ago. Including Esso and Shoppers. And the liquor store. Yes, I happened to stop by at the Superstore once and my wife ended up shopping at no frills once..but we are with you guys. Boycott on!
I really hope we can find a local shop/restaurant to support at least once this month as a payback for this. Some have amazing prices and products and at the end of the day you just put it back into their production cycle.

Not my post bit I've seen this.
Someone needs to translate and explain the motion in Chinese… T&T is such a staple for so many Asian people in Canada. It’s what we grew up with when it was still run by the Lee family. Many Asian families are unaware it was acquired by Loblaw years ago and continue to go there out of habit and comfort. I’m guilty of it as well - I love T&T =(.
Reaching the Asian demographic will boost this boycott further. T&T’s 2024 annual revenue was $618 million.
Fools!!! Even if their sales go down in May – they’ll just increase their margin on a few products to make up for the loss revenue on total sales in May.
It’s the carbon tax dummies!
You idiots need to realize y’all still need to eat. Not shopping at one store only increases demand at the other stores and increased demand theoretically leads to higher prices.
Not surprised at the lack of basic economic understanding in this sub but hey, at least it’s entertaining reading the posts here!
You’re an idiot for not broadening your mind. I’ve adjusted my budget for April and May to account for some higher priced items at smaller grocery store brands. I’ve also starting cooking cheaper means that taste great and can last for a few meals. I don’t mind doing this to boycott loblaws.

My partner and I agreed this morning no Loblaws, Provigo, Maxi, Club entrepôt or Shoppers drug mart in May!
May those small changes turn to forever habits!
They are awesome habits! I've learned to shop local, learned to shop around the deals and hunt for sales. I have not stepped foot in Loblaws anything and we've saved soo much money in the long run. Yeah, they still evil, but at least affordable evil.
It was. I’m sorry Walmart was your only other option. Canadian lawmakers need to step up and create better conditions for new market participants and meaningful competition, small and large.
No other option where we live. Pickens are slim here
Food Basics is one more exit away on the 401 IIRC and worth it if you want a Canadian option.
Try altgrocery.ca to see if someone has listed options you may not know about.
Funny thing about that is, Walmart shows us that big conglomerate oligarchs can keep prices low. They are actually proving our point, strange as it is.
If Walmart is our only serious food option, that’s terrible
Why stop after May?
May your June turn into July and beyond
We need 6 million on this Sub. Then oligarch Weston will sell/resign. Loser!
Even if he resigns he maintains his billionaire status as well as still controlling grocery distribution centres for all other grocers in Canada
We need each person on this sub to share it with their local FB pages, X pages etc.
Be prepared to be the same post May as well. Once you starts aging $50-$100 bucks a trip going elsewhere, you won't go back.
What about SuperstoreTM, Dominion®, No Frills®, Valu-MartTM, Real Canadian Superstore®, Wholesale ClubTM, Your Independent GrocerTM and ZehrsTM.
We have non of that here in Quebec :)
Fair enough, I never know what's where, lmao. It'll be nice seeing people boycotting these scumbags.
What do you think?
Lmfao trying to bait, fuck off. I'm for the boycott.
Boycott forever and make it count. We need to make an example out of them
It's your choice to spend more elsewhere
Loblaws is by far the most expensive option. so no they certainly will not be spending more.
Shop american!
lol. Stay scared, homie.
Penny pincher!
Every time there is a contrarian opinion in one of the newspapers we seem to boost our numbers. Hmmm...
Keep ‘em coming then 🤣 complete opposite effect of what those clowns want
It's called the Barbara Streisand effect.

It starts with us! We can bring change in the face of adversity! We can do this! They stole our bread and our dough! Nok er nok!
Okay, I may be very late to this party, but what is Nok Er Nok and where did it come from? (Picture the Chris Pratt too afraid to ask meme).
So this was said in the same way people take the saying "let them eat cake"?
Per Bank (the actual name of Loblaws CEO) is from Denmark and Nok Er Nok is Dutch for "Enough is enough". He released a statement the other day explaining his position and used this term which was immediately adopted by the movement.
So, Loblaws efforts on dousing the fire blew up in their face, energizing people for the boycott?
Pretty much
People from Denmark speak Danish Netherlands for Dutch.

I have a family and pets. I do the shopping. It won’t be at loblaws.
You're right. My search did not specify Loblaws.
Break up Canada's grocery and telecommunications oligopolies today!
I can shop at other grocers, local ones even. How do I do the same for cell phone providers when the big ones pretty much own the entire market. Do I go without a phone?

I absolutely agree. I don't know if I'd say we're a command economy as much as we are a plutocracy.
Do we have bumper stickers yet? I want mine to read “NOK ER NOK BOYCOTT LOBLAWS”

60k of us "basement dwellers" and growing strong! Love to see it, looking forward to the group reaching 100k.

I finally stopped going to Zehrs for groceries. We make a decent amount of money but can’t justify it anymore, the prices are disgusting. Will be going to Walmart from now on (as much as that pains me)
Nok er nok indeed!
My parents heard about it on the news. People are becoming more and more aware.
I'm glad to be participating in this.
Starve the beast!
They were talking about this group on CBC Radio this morning! 🤙🤙
I have $78 of stuff I have to return to shoppers, that’s happening tomorrow.
Nok Er Nok!
NOK ER NOK ✊🏼 so happy to see people united over a good & just cause.
“NOK ER NOK” I love how this clown ass CEO inadvertently created a new meme
60k on reddit is great but there's more than 60k who don't use reddit or even the internet. The profit motive on necessities has to stop. When I moved to Canada about 12 years ago I thought it was actually pretty cool that we had nationalized corporations that paid people well. Found it when I got here that they'd all been sold off to private investors.
Food basics has solid white tuna on sale for $1.88. Good option for cheap protein
I sincerely hope that Nok er Nok becomes a sarcastic meme. It would be great.
I hope all these folks start supporting the small local chains and farmers markets. Bye loblaws. I won't miss you.
NOK ER NOK!
Nok nok? Who’s there? The Bank.
Found this sub because of a news article
I love how you’ve adopted their own slogan to use against them. Fuck those greedy lying bastards
So are we all shorting loblaws stock also🤔

A friend just asked me why the RCSS is empty where they are.
Boomers are finding out about it through the Toronto star
I will join this crusade.

I drove past no frills and said goodbye lol I'm cutting out save-on too. I just want to credit where I get my info.) Good luck everyone. We can survive without them. But they can't survive without US!!!!!
Anytime I can join a cause to make greedy privileged multimillionaires panic, I’m all for it.
Was raining 🌧 yesterday, could have gone to my nearest No Frills, but instead went to a different store. Enough is enough.
I used shoppers pharmacy regularly. It’s time to find a locally owned jawn.
It's now normal to skip Loblaw owned companies. It's easy once your set up. Fuck you Galen.
Keep it up! KOK ER KOK!! Post it! Let them hear our voice! Let them know how strong we are! Let them know we are hungry and poor!
They have employed an army of Troll Farm workers to sow discord. Probably 5% of the new sign ups are bad, foreign actors....
Great milestone. Now let's just hope their CEO reads reddit.
What is nok er nok?
I went into a suppertore on the weekend guys! Not to buy anything! I just knocked over anything I felt was overpriced till they kicked me out! 18 minutes! 12 items!
Hey Galen! Here's an easy one for you... Please explain why your PC chips are double the price of your No Name brand chips regardless of which store I'm in. I know they're made by the same company.
I highly doubt the danish people would keep paying high prices while thinking ‘Nok er nok’ Talk about elitism
Any thoughts on shopping there but ONLY for loss leaders + high points offers? I'm curious to see if their offers change at all. Otherwise I'll do coop, local meat store + Walmart if needed. Not sure if I'll get to Costco this month.

LETS GOO 💪🏼 remember to do your part no matter how minuscule it may feel.
And there are more who are not part of this sub who are participating as well. Fuck you Loblaws. You all suck.
Ants together strong!
I’m feeling this group. Hope we can all make a collective change.
Hell yea

And that's just members of the sub. I'm convinced Canada wide the number of people onboard with the boycott is in the hundreds of thousands. Like, members of my family who are chronically offline are onboard with it. I can the the only one.
That’s amazing!! Can someone please tell me what Nok Er Nok is? 🙈
Must be all that funding.
Did you get your cheque yet? I’m still waiting!
I will not shop at a loblaws or any of their other stores.
I have been trying to do my part on other platforms. The paid shills are out full tilt on X lol. Keep on keepin on
61.4k right now!!
I'm joining!!!
Boycott on!
And to think they started sweating at 5K. To the moon! My Regards to Charleboix!
I really hope we can find a local shop/restaurant to support at least once this month as a payback for this. Some have amazing prices and products and at the end of the day you just put it back into their production cycle. * Not my post bit I've seen this.

Also-not my post*** just was impressed
Someone needs to translate and explain the motion in Chinese… T&T is such a staple for so many Asian people in Canada. It’s what we grew up with when it was still run by the Lee family. Many Asian families are unaware it was acquired by Loblaw years ago and continue to go there out of habit and comfort. I’m guilty of it as well - I love T&T =(. Reaching the Asian demographic will boost this boycott further. T&T’s 2024 annual revenue was $618 million.
Just here cuz i stopped shopping at Loblaws years ago. Support local! I shop at Blush Lane Market in edmonton ♥
60,001. Don’t I count?
Over 3000 new followers since I posted this 24hr ago.
I live downtown toronto and have boycotted no frills, loblaws and shoppers drug mart. I’m shopping local. What else do I need to do?
Outside of that just tell those around you who aren't privy to the boycott what's going on and why they should as well :)
The shills are out full force and it's going to get worse. We should be implementing mod approval on posts from accounts that are just a few days old.
McCringy!
It was 59.7k yesterday so....
I did a massive shop at superstore yesterday so I am ready to not shop at Loblaws this month. All stocked up!
Nothing going to happen
Not with that attitude!
It was at 59.7k yesterday and it’s at 60.3k as I write this. So hundreds. 600-700 or so in the last 24H. But ok lol. Must be girl math or something.
600 is the new "thousands" lol
Lol and they downvote the truth. I swear half this sub lives in an alternate reality. It’s just cultish.
It's absolutely insane how useless people need to feel useful
Such a hypocrite. Literally the last post in your feed is to boycott Reddit. How did that one go for you? I see you’re still here… 🤣🤣🤣🤣
