1- Pippin singing to Denethor;
2- Sam speech at the end of Two Towers;
3- Arwen almost losing Frodo;
4- Théoden's battle cry before the battle of the Pelennor Fields.
5 - Sam’s speech as they are climbing Mount Doom…
***”Do you remember the Shire, Mr Frodo? It’ll be spring soon…”***
and ***“I can’t carry it for you… but I can carry you!”***
Everyone needs a friend like Samwise.
So emotional. After the ring is destroyed and he’s talking about the strawberries in his British accent and “if ever there was a girl, it would’ve been her”. I cry every damn time
I can't decide just four- but I'll try
1. Boromirs redemption and death
2. Aragorn helms deep return 😍 - all starts of Aragorn fights
3. Faramirs dilemma with Frodo and Sam and how he lets Frodo go
4. Rohirrim returns to Theoden
5. The beacons are lit - goosebumps everytime!
6. Aragorn diverting Saurons attention and the 'For Frodo' ✨
7. When the ring is destroyed and the ground on which enemies stand crashes
All war speeches and the Boromirs- remember today little brother - today life is good (my daily motivation)
Number 4 is a moment that always chokes me up. the overwhelming gratitude after so much sacrifice on their part, especially Frodo and Sam. I'm tearing up just writing about it.
> Boromir teaching Pippin and Merry to sword fight
I love this scene. It's one of a very few moments where Boromir is shown in a sympathetic light, and it makes his last stand all the more meaningful. "They took the little ones" gets me every time.
From the movies... Hmmm.
1. When Pippin asks Gandalf about what is after death.
2. Boromir telling Aragorn what happened to the hobbits, and his profession of loyalty to him.
3. Gandalf returning to Helm's Deep with the literal cavalry.
4. When Saruman shows Grima the orc army and Grima cried.
I love the conversation between Pippin and Gandalf.
Pip: I didn’t think it’d end this way.
Gandalf: End? No, the journey doesn’t end here. Death is just another path… one which we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass… and then you see it.
Pip: What? Gandalf?… See what?
Gandalf: White shores, … and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.
Pip: (Smiling) Well that isn’t so bad.
Gandalf: (softly) No… no it isn’t.
I plan on having that quote at my funeral. It’s hopeful while also comforting.
And then the sad choral music as Aragorn and Boromir hustle the hobbits out of Moria. I have the soundtrack and listen to it occasionally. When that part comes on, I turn to my wife and say, "Gandalf fell." And then do my best to not cry.
Flair checks out. If they had flown to Mordor the ring would've been destroyed much faster and Sauron would've fallen much earlier
(yes I know Gandalf means run when he says fly and it's just a synonym in this context, but that one line has sparked so so many debates)
"I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you!" is my peak ever since the book
Getting to see Boromir go down fighting is good as his is an off-page death in the book, but you know he was a badass with 20 dead orcs at his feet
For me, the best book scene is Boromir's funeral where they sing lament for him, comb his hair, set him on a brier the in the boat, and send him off with his enemies' weapons at his feet
It's a fantastic example of what it means to do a screen adaptation of a book and how it's not just ok to change (some!) things but can even be necessary. The _off_ page death works well in the book; showing it _on_ screen was perfect. As was the decision to move it from the start ot TTT to the end of FotR.
Theoden and Gandalf on Theodred's grave mound. Bernhard Hill delivers one of the best acted scenes in the trilogy.
Boromir and Faramir at the celebration of the reconquest of Osgiliath is also one of my favourites.
Came here to post this.
Just two top tier actors acting the hell out of an underrated quiet scene. The camerawork and staging perfectly complemented this scene too.
1. my friends, you bow to no one
2. Sam’s speech at the end of two towers
3. rohirrim charge
4. you shall not pass
(5. when frodo wakes up at the end he and sam look at eachother)
Edit: thinking about how many great moments there are i wonder if any movie will ever be this good
Arwen being chased by the nazgul. The bit before the attack on helms deep with all the orks marching and that one ork with the light backdrop does that huge roar. Theodens sons funeral is the best acting in the entire series and aragorns coronation. I could go on forever (shoutout to rohans desth charge)
1. When Eomer finds Eowyn on the battlefield
2. You bow to no one
3. You shall not pass
4. The death of Boromir
I can’t believe the beacons are lit didn’t make this list. I love this trilogy. The first two bring me instant tears, the last two instant chills.
1. By the blood of our people are your lands kept safe
2. And if we fail, what then?! What happens when Sauron takes back what is his?!
3. You carry the fate of us all, little one
4. I ask only for the strength to defend my people!
Boromir 4 lyfe. A brother, a captain, a steward of his people.
In the movies? When Aragorn says loudly to Legolas “Then I shall die as one of them” — and separately when Theoden says “what can men do against such reckless hate?”
But the short poetic speech by Theoden that ends with “how did it come to this?” is the pinnacle. Because Helm’s Deep is where hope resurfaces.
Those and the scene where Frodo casually mentions that Sam is the real hero of the story.
Théoden mourning at Théodred’s grave and the charge at Pelenor together. Absolute art. The score, Bernard Hill’s slow decline into tears, McKellan’s subtle gestures of sympathy. I’ve seen the films dozens of times each and still have to actively FIGHT to not cry every single time. Théoden’s failure as a king is epitomized by losing his son so early, but later redeems himself at the Pelenor fields. The book version emphasizes Théoden’s newfound worthiness even more overtly in the way books can.
1. I kinda like when Gandalf reveals himself as Gandalf the White to Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli. You know, that shourt bout when they toss weapons at him: I like it because it showcase the power of Gandlaf in a overt fashion, something that is rather rare.
2)Sauron annihilating the armies of the Last Alliance wit that hugemongus mace and wasting Elendil at the very start. Its just sucha short sequence but it so clearly conveyed the inhuman power oft he Dark Lord.
3)When Frodo confronts Gollum about his true identity as Smeagol and Gollum recites that verse:
*"Cold be heart and hand and bone,*
*Cold be travelers far from home,*
*They do not see what lies ahead*
*when sun has failed and moon is dead."*
I understand that it had a different context in the books pertaining to the rise of Morgoth, but itss till...it has such a beatiful melancholy about it, perfectly encapsulating the loneliness and hopelessness of Gollum's existance
Rise of Morgoth? Wasn’t the original spoken by the wraith from the Barrow-downs? I don’t remember how it goes but I’d expect it to have something to do with Angmar and the Witch-king, if anything.
One of the stanzas goes:
*In the black wind the stars shall die,*
*and still on gold here let them lie,*
*till the dark lord lifts his hand*
*over dead sea and withered land.*
I admittedly could be mistaken, but exegesis of it was that it pertained to Morgoth's god-llike power and the darkness he brought.
1. Frodo, Sam, and Gandalf with the purple sun rise as they leave the Shire
2. The Arwen horse chase scene
3. Gandalf appearing at Helms Deep
4. Aragorn telling the ghost king “the blades been remade”
Honestly, it could probably change again tomorrow. I do think my #1 will always stay in the top four though because I think it’s one of the most beautiful shots in cinema history
when gollum tells smeagol that nobody likes him and that he’s got no friends.
when bilbo turns into a demon for .5 seconds when frodo refuses to give him the ring in rivendell.
as somebody else mentioned, boromir’s redemption.
The one where Gandalf and Pippin arrive at minas tirith and ride shadowfax to the top of the city is by far one of the best scenes and people don't mention it enough. The music of Gondor is fantastic too.
1 - The start of the first movie where Hobbiton is shown;
2 - Aragorn singing in the marshes while hobbits sleep;
3 - Gandalf cleansing Theoden from Saruman;
4 - Merry and Pippin smoking Longbottom Leaf in Isengard and we see the Fellowship approaching.
+1 for a journey in the dark. My favourite piece of music from the trilogy too - especially when the camera pans out as Gandalf lights up the halls. Goosebumps every time.
Not in order of preference, but my take is the following:
1. Boromir redemption
2. Pippin singing for Denethor
3. Eowyn killing the witch king
4. Sam carrying Frodo up Mount Doom
Four? Pssshhhh. Best I can do is four…teen.
-The Breaking of the Fellowship.
-Gandalf falling/fighting Durin’s Bane.
-The Intro/backstory to Middle Earth/Second Age.
-Saruman addressing his Uruk Hai, to include Wormtongue’s tear.
-Last March of the Ents.
-Forth Eorlingas.
-Theoden’s Passing.
-Eomer throws spear at Olyphant Pilot.
-Eomer comes across his “dead” sister.
-Theoden/Aragorn ride out together.
-Aragorn attacks with the Shadow Host.
-Houses of Healing.
-“For Frodo.”
-The parting of Frodo and Sam.
1) In both the books and in the extended edition of the movies, there's a scene in Ithilien that sticks with me. Sauron's smoke clouds are in effect, and the scene has Frodo, Sam, and Gollum come across an old Gondorian statue of a King of old. The statue's head has been toppled, and in its place a horrible effigy for Sauron. They notice the King's head has rolled a little down the hill and has been overgrown with aethelas. As they're passing by, a single ray of sunlight manages to break through the clouds and lands on the King's head, which lights up brilliantly because of the white flowers on it. Sam stops Frodo and goes "Look Mr. Frodo, the King has his crown again." and for a few moments, they're able to take in an uplifting moment and forget for a brief time of their heavy burdens.
2) Theoden's war speech at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. I'll listen to the soundtrack for this scene before any big interviews/events for hype up.
3) Gandalf vs the Balrog
4) The Two Towers, Boromir + Faramir flashback scene from the Extended Edition. Shows a the side of Boromir that he usually was, showed their brotherly connection, and planted the Denethor plot earlier in the trilogy which I think works a lot.
I will add:
1. Gandalf and gang release Theodin from Saruman and Wormtongue.
2. Aragorn honors the hobbits “My friends, you now to no one.”
3. Gollum and Sméagol’s argument that Sméagol wins.
4. Boromir’s last battle to save Merry and Pippin.
Extra credit: Saruman and Gandalf’s fight in Orthanc
1) “But I can carry you!” moment (literally tearing up thinking of that scene lol)
2) “End? No the journey doesn’t end here…” speech from Gandalf to Pippin
3) “What are we holding onto Sam?” Sam’s speech at the end of the Two-Towers
4) “For Frodo” (Remaining fellowship’s suicide charge to distract Sauron)
1. You bow to no one
2. Theodreds burial
3. Butterbur hiding while the nazgul stalk past
4. Saruman delivering badass lines like 'you know of what i speak..'
5. Boromir finding solice on deathbed on the mention of 'his people'
6. Galadriel being absolutely badass and speaking in everyones mind after entering lothlorien
1. Boromir's redemption (especially his last words to Aragorn "my brother, my captain, my king") goosepumps everytime!
2. Sam carrying Frodo
3. Theoden's speech (of course)
4. Merry & Pippin finding Saruman's stash of Longbottom leaf (lets say this to remember that this story has some great, innocent and joyfull moments)
The Barrow Downs - Tom Bombadil saving the hobbits from the Barrow Wights and receiving their swords.
Glorfindel saving the hobbits from the Nazgul, putting Frodo on his white horse Asfaloth, and telling the horse take Frodo to Rivendell
The conspiracy formed by Sam, Merry, Pippin, Fredegar Bolger and Frodo's move to Crickhollow
Gildor meeting with Frodo in the Shire running off the Nazgul, and telling Frodo what should be done. Frodo had greeted Gildor by saying, "Elen síla lúmenn' omentielvo" (A star shines upon the hour of our meeting) Impressed with his knowledge of the ancient tongue and lore he commended Frodo and named him Elf-friend.
"Bilbo, have you been at the Gaffer's homebrew?"
"No! Well...yes, but but tha-tha-that-that's not the point!"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkA3e0vaN-Y
Eomer when he finds Eowyn on the ground at Pelennor fields. That is the only time in the entire movie that we ever see this hardened warrior in absolute pieces. We see a big brother thinking he lost his sister alongside his uncle. And boy, did his scream of anguish rock me to the core.
1) Arwen’s rescue of Frodo, 2) Gandalf vs. the Balrog, 3) “My friends, you bow to no one”, 4) goodbyes at the Gray Havens and “Well, I’m back.”
That’s just off the top of my head though!
My favorite scene has to be at the end of fellowship after Boromir fails to take the ring from Frodo. When Aragorn single handedly challenges the advancing Uruk force to buy Frodo time to escape. He’s ready to give everything he has and sacrifice his life for just a few precious moments of time. Then out of nowhere Gimli and Legolas rush in at the sounds of fighting with no hesitation. Out of all the films, this scene is my favorite.
1. Boromi's redemption and death
2. Aragorn's speech at the black gates
3. Pippin singing for Denethor
4. When the Ents attack Orthnac
5. "My friends, you bow to no one."
6. When Arwen has the vision of her son
7. Anything involving the Shire
8. Sam's speech
Oh and the entire rest of the story
1- Theoden mourning his son with Gandalf.
2- Theoden's speech at Helms Deep
3- Theoden's pause and answer to Gondor's call for aid: And Rohan shall answer!
4- Theoden's speech at Pelennor Fields
His death and his cleansing/transformation move me less so. I also like plenty of Boromir scenes! Like the flashback with Faramir. And his scenes at Amon Hen.
Boromir and Theoden are the best characters in the Trilogy. They are the most human, and although flawed at times, they want what is best for their people.
From movies
1- Arwen facing the Nazgul
2- The fellowship sees the Argonaths for the first time (it was exactly as I dreamed while reading the books)
3-Boromirs heroic death
4- Theoden saves the day at the battle of Helms Deep
From the books
1-Frodo and Sam meets Tom Bombadil.
2-Gandalf faces the Balrog
3-Gandalf vs. Witch King at the gates of Minsa Tirith
4-Eowyn killing the Witch King
The list cannot be contained to just four moments
Boromir taking to Aragorn about Minas Tirith in Lothlorian
Boromir's last words
Theoden standing before Theodred's tomb
Merry and Pippin are told to go back to the Shire by Treebeard
The last march of the ents
Sam's monologue in Osgiliath
The lighting of the Beacons
The charge of the Rohirrim
"I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you!"
Frodo departs Middle Earth
4. Sam’s speech at the end of the Two Towers
3. Boromir and Faramir celebrate their win but must deal with Denathor’s appearance.
2. Gandalf’s goodbye to Bilbo and Bilbo’s reluctant goodbye to the one ring.
1. Frodo standing at the river, ring in hand, at the end of fellowship, thinking about abandoning his journey, only to muster the ultimate courage to continue
1) Boromir’s last moments with Aragorn
2) DEATH
3) bridge of Kazhad Dûm
4) either the reforging of Narsil/anduril or Sam carrying Frodo
Honestly there are so many that this list could change with my mood. But I will say that from the fellowship taking the Anduin River all the way to the end of the film is cinematic perfection! Acting, writing, cinematography, score, action, emotions, everything is *chefs kiss*
Gandalf riding down with the Rohirrim at Helm's Deep
King Theoden's speech. Death! Death! DEATH! FORTH EORLINGAS! Gives me goosebumps every time.
Boromir's death is always gut-wrenching.
Samwise thwarting Shelob. That's the physical manifestation of everything Sam is, through and through.
1. The charge of the Rohirrim at Pelennor Fields.
2. Let this be the hour, that we draw swords together.
3. You bow to no one.
4. Amor Din. The lighting of the beacons.
1. Ride out and meet them, Forth Eorlingas!
2. Boromir redemption
3. Fellowship leaving Rivendell
4. I cant carry it for you, but I can carry you!
5. Gandalf vs the balrog
**1. Why does it cry, Smeagol?**
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYpRSs7pzJo&list=FLc6lcWrNGbVSxcLngeMGmQg&index=13
**2. **HE TOOK IT** ( breadcrumbs part )**

**3. Denathor tomato scene**
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZcByPzpCLw
**4. Boromis thowing sticks to the ground**
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUZ29kEJLdE
I like the acting and the passion expressed by the characters.
4-Preparing for battle at Helm's Deep. The swell of emotions from all; the looming inevitable threat marching its way forward. Theoden and his people cornered for a last mighty stand. Men preparing for battle; but also those "who have seen too many winters or two few" also armoring up just the same.
3-Arwen's rescuing frodo. This is just personal sentimental value. Watching LOTR the first time i wasnt any older than 5 or so. And I was hooked. Then Frodo got stabbed with the morgul blade. I was frightened and upset just as the other hobbits were. "Is frodo going to be ok?" Then a light, like a literal angel riding into save the day. Arwen came and calmed everyone down; healed frodo to enough to make the journey and bravely brought him to Rivendel while being chased. (This is what made me fall in love with lord of the rings, no movie had me moving like that. Also I low key fell in love with Arwen too haha)
2-DEATH (For obvious reasons!) The whole battle on Pellenor fields. From this moment; to the quiet before battle of Gandalf comforting Pippin about death. To aragorn fulfilling his destiny and oath to the army of the dead by releasing them after they fullfilled their duty.
1-Gandalf comforting Frodo; "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that has been given to us" it honesty just really impacted how I live my life.
I love all of it but could be:\
-"where is the horse and the rider? where is the wind that was blowing?..."\
-"instead of a Dark Lord you will have a Queen!..."\
-"when did saruman the white abandon reason for madness!" *wizard fight*\
-"we shall have peace!"
Also just to pick more than 4:\
-"I am no man!"\
-"mist and shadow, cloud and shade. All shall fade..."\
-"a new power is rising! it's victory is at hand!"
How can you expect us to pick four??? But ok here's mine in chronological order:
1) Frodo making the hard choice of taking the ring to Mordor during the Council of Elrond. I feel his fear and uncertainty everytime I watch FOTR. He knowingly sacrifices his safety even more because these "greater races" are not able to do what must be done.
2) Can I say the entire sequence of the Balrog starting when we first hear it's growl in the Great Hall to the end of the fight on the Bridge of Khazad-dum?
If I can't choose the entire sequence then I would go with moment we first hear the Balrogs growl. The way the goblins instantly scatter and we then see the dread in Gandalf's eyes. He knows this foe is beyond any of them and there's nothing they can do but RUN!
3) Theoden's speech and the charge of the Rohirrim on Pelenor Fields.
It's such a powerful speech that I raise my hand up when we see from the air the entire Rohirrim shout DEATH!
4) The farewells at the Grey Havens.
Its sad to say goodbye Gandalf and Frodo. However, after a thousand years Gandalf was the only Istari to complete his mission so he gets to return home filling fulfilled. And poor Frodo went through so much suffering. I'm happy he gets to go to a heavenly land where he can live in peace.
Arwen vs 9 Nazgûl on the water. I know it’s supposed to be glorfindel, but I absolutely love Liv Tyler’s line
Aragorn’s rush on Mordor at the black gates
Gandalf and Frodo in front of the three doors in Moria
The opening scene of the last alliance vs Sauron
“So do all who live to see such times but that is not for them to decide, all you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you.”
“Death! Death! DEEAAATTH!”
“Come on Mr. Frodo, I can’t carry the ring for you… but I can carry you!”
“It was like in the stories, the ones that really mattered…”
1. Hobbits hiding from the dark rider.
2. Sam and Frodo on the slopes of Mount Doom.
3. Strider introduction.
4. Ride of the Rohirrim.
And about 100 more scenes.
1. Galadrlel helping Frodo stand up when he falls after throwing Gollum down the ledge
2. Gandalf, Eomer and other riders as they are about to charge to Helm's deep
3. Bilbo and Gandalf looking down at Bilbo's birthday party being prepared
4. The scene where it's only Gandalf sitting on some boxes (or a bench?) during Faramir's charge, it lasts a couple of seconds and I always think it's very beautiful
1. Lightening of the Beacons 🔥🔥🔥
2. Ride of the Rohirrim
3. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli chasing the Uruk Hai
4. Gandalf Telling Frodo about the truth of his Ring in Hobbiton
The lighting of the beacons (and the following scene: "Gondor calls for aid!" *beat* "And Rohan will answer!")
When Aragorn receives Andúril, aka the re-forged Narsil: "They believe nothing. They answer to no one." - "They will answer to the king of Gondor!"
Eowyn (and Merry) vs the Witch King
"My friends, you bow to no one."
1. Gandalf talking to Pippin about death in Minas Tirith
2. Frodo and Gandalf leaving Middle-Earth at the end
3. Ride of the Rohirrim
4. Boromir’s death
My no.1 will always be Eowyn saving Theoden and Theoden's dying scene with Eowyn.
Haldir's arrival at Helm's Deep.
Gandalf releasing Theoden from Saruman's spell.
1- I made a Promise Mr Frodo, A Promise
2- There is still some good left in this world, and its worth fighting for
3- For Frodo
4- My Friends you bow to no one
"Gondor has fallen. There is no Hope for Men.

How could I possibly choose? Oh man... okay... uhhh... how about:
1. Is it cheating to basically say the entirety of the Extended Edition scene introducing us to the Shire leading up to Bilbo vanishing? The entire thing just makes me cozy and happy.
2. The beacons are lit!!
3. DEEEEAAAATH!!!
4. It is likely... that we go... to our doom.
5. Boromir's redemption
6. Home is behind, the world ahead.
7. Give them a moment for pitys sake!!
8. Don't. Follow. The lights.
9. The first introduction of the Fellowship walking over the hill
10. Fighting the Balrog in full
11. Basically every grand sweeping over land or kingdoms with epic music
12. Every. Single. Scene. In every. Damn. Movie. 🤣😭
1- Pippin singing to Denethor; 2- Sam speech at the end of Two Towers; 3- Arwen almost losing Frodo; 4- Théoden's battle cry before the battle of the Pelennor Fields.
Sam speech always hits me in the right place, beautiful. That and the background music.
Even Smeagol was shook for a minute.
“The fat one is cooking, yeeessssss, yeesssssss. Maybe we’s need to be to thems after all!?”
ARISE NOW, ARISE, RIDERS OF THÉODEN!
Death!!!
Death!!!!
DEATH!!!!!
DEEEAAAAAATHHHHH!!!!
FOOORRTTHHH EEOORRLIINNGAAASSSSS
5 - Sam’s speech as they are climbing Mount Doom… ***”Do you remember the Shire, Mr Frodo? It’ll be spring soon…”*** and ***“I can’t carry it for you… but I can carry you!”*** Everyone needs a friend like Samwise.
So emotional. After the ring is destroyed and he’s talking about the strawberries in his British accent and “if ever there was a girl, it would’ve been her”. I cry every damn time
Sam's speech made me cry on Zoloft, so..
Death!!!!!!
I can't decide just four- but I'll try 1. Boromirs redemption and death 2. Aragorn helms deep return 😍 - all starts of Aragorn fights 3. Faramirs dilemma with Frodo and Sam and how he lets Frodo go 4. Rohirrim returns to Theoden 5. The beacons are lit - goosebumps everytime! 6. Aragorn diverting Saurons attention and the 'For Frodo' ✨ 7. When the ring is destroyed and the ground on which enemies stand crashes All war speeches and the Boromirs- remember today little brother - today life is good (my daily motivation)
damn boromir’s redemption. so early in the series, but so impactful!
So very true
1) rohirrim charge 2) boromir's last stand 3)in 1st film there are panoramic scenes with full fellowship
Agreed on number 3. I think thats the first time we hear the fellowship musical motif stated fully, with the loud brass. Great scene.
3) in 1st film there are panoramic scenes of New Zealand FIFY
Why do I have no memory of the upper right panel? Those are two beautifully manicured hands which rules out like 90% of the cast.
it's a very brief scene when merry gives pippin the last of his longbottom leaf before they part ways
“I know you’ve run out. You smoke too much, Pip.”
I can remember exactly how he says, "you smoke too much Pip". Didn't recognize the picture though
oh mannn that one hit hard for sure.
The nail salon spends extra time on their hands because they refuse to touch their feet.
That was when Merry gave Pippin the rest of his pipe weed
1. Boromir teaching Pippin and Merry to sword fight 2. You shall not pass 3. Aragorn hugs Haldir at Helms Deep 4. My friends, you bow to no one
Number 4 is a moment that always chokes me up. the overwhelming gratitude after so much sacrifice on their part, especially Frodo and Sam. I'm tearing up just writing about it.
> Boromir teaching Pippin and Merry to sword fight I love this scene.
> When Saruman shows Grima the orc army and Grima cried. I love Brad Dourif's performance for that scene.
Underrated actor in my opinion, loved him in One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest too
I love the conversation between Pippin and Gandalf.
Fake, why isn't the bridge of Khazad dum in this picture?
Yes! A clear miss on my part. Too many options
*"Run, you fools"*
Fly, you fools
And then the sad choral music as Aragorn and Boromir hustle the hobbits out of Moria. I have the soundtrack and listen to it occasionally. When that part comes on, I turn to my wife and say, "Gandalf fell." And then do my best to not cry.
Damn you're right. Maybe I need to check my ears again
Flair checks out. If they had flown to Mordor the ring would've been destroyed much faster and Sauron would've fallen much earlier (yes I know Gandalf means run when he says fly and it's just a synonym in this context, but that one line has sparked so so many debates)
1- "My brother, My captain, my King" 2- "The beacons are lit!" 3- "Now for Wrath, Now for Ruin" 4- Moria and Khazad Dum
“And Rohan will answer. Muster the Rohirrim.” Then that music kicks in.
"I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you!" is my peak ever since the book Getting to see Boromir go down fighting is good as his is an off-page death in the book, but you know he was a badass with 20 dead orcs at his feet For me, the best book scene is Boromir's funeral where they sing lament for him, comb his hair, set him on a brier the in the boat, and send him off with his enemies' weapons at his feet
1. my friends, you bow to no one 2. Sam’s speech at the end of two towers 3. rohirrim charge 4. you shall not pass (5. when frodo wakes up at the end he and sam look at eachother) Edit: thinking about how many great moments there are i wonder if any movie will ever be this good
1. Gandalf vs Balrog 2. Death of Boromir 3. Return of Rohirrim riders 4. Theoden's speech
It is impossible as a man to not tear up at "My Friends, you bow to no one"
I have way more tears at "No parent should have to bury their child" though.
- They have a cave troll (: - So it begins... - The beacons are lit! Gondor calls for aid! - Death! Death! DEATH!
1. I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you. 2. My friends, you bow to no one. 3. Frodo' wouldn't have gotten fat without Sam. 4. DEEEEEAAAAAAATH
>Frodo' wouldn't have gotten fat without Sam. It was all the fried taters, wasn’t it
With a brace of coneys
1. When Eomer finds Eowyn on the battlefield 2. You bow to no one 3. You shall not pass 4. The death of Boromir I can’t believe the beacons are lit didn’t make this list. I love this trilogy. The first two bring me instant tears, the last two instant chills.
1. By the blood of our people are your lands kept safe 2. And if we fail, what then?! What happens when Sauron takes back what is his?! 3. You carry the fate of us all, little one 4. I ask only for the strength to defend my people! Boromir 4 lyfe. A brother, a captain, a steward of his people.
Yes there is weakness, but strength also!
1. the last march of the ents 2. flight from edoras 3. the passing of theoden 4. the end of all things
The end of all things gets me. Every single time 🥺
#DEAAATTTTHHHHH!!!!!
In the movies? When Aragorn says loudly to Legolas “Then I shall die as one of them” — and separately when Theoden says “what can men do against such reckless hate?” But the short poetic speech by Theoden that ends with “how did it come to this?” is the pinnacle. Because Helm’s Deep is where hope resurfaces. Those and the scene where Frodo casually mentions that Sam is the real hero of the story.
1 - Weathertop (entire sequence) 2 - Charge of the Rohirrim (Pelanor) 3 - Balrog & Gandalf (All Segments) 4 - Boromirs Final Stand
1. Fireworks Gandalf 2. I would have followed you my brother. My captain. My king. 3. Charge of the Rohirrim 4. My friends, you bow to no one.
Made my list. “No parent should have to bury their child”. 😭
3)When Frodo confronts Gollum about his true identity as Smeagol and Gollum recites that verse: *"Cold be heart and hand and bone,* *Cold be travelers far from home,* *They do not see what lies ahead* *when sun has failed and moon is dead."* I understand that it had a different context in the books pertaining to the rise of Morgoth, but itss till...it has such a beatiful melancholy about it, perfectly encapsulating the loneliness and hopelessness of Gollum's existance
Rise of Morgoth? Wasn’t the original spoken by the wraith from the Barrow-downs? I don’t remember how it goes but I’d expect it to have something to do with Angmar and the Witch-king, if anything.
One of the stanzas goes: *In the black wind the stars shall die,* *and still on gold here let them lie,* *till the dark lord lifts his hand* *over dead sea and withered land.* I admittedly could be mistaken, but exegesis of it was that it pertained to Morgoth's god-llike power and the darkness he brought.
1. Frodo, Sam, and Gandalf with the purple sun rise as they leave the Shire 2. The Arwen horse chase scene 3. Gandalf appearing at Helms Deep 4. Aragorn telling the ghost king “the blades been remade” Honestly, it could probably change again tomorrow. I do think my #1 will always stay in the top four though because I think it’s one of the most beautiful shots in cinema history
GROND
Pippin listening to Gandalf explaining about the afterlife, as they're basically about to die under attack from Mordor. Gets me every time.
1. You bow to no one 2. Sam and Frodo at the end of two towers 3. The transformation of Theoden 4. The balrog
Gandalf returning to Helm's Deep with Rohirrim, that scene gives me the chills.
Also Aragorn bowing down in front of the hobbits, "you bow to no one"...
when gollum tells smeagol that nobody likes him and that he’s got no friends. when bilbo turns into a demon for .5 seconds when frodo refuses to give him the ring in rivendell. as somebody else mentioned, boromir’s redemption.
The one where Gandalf and Pippin arrive at minas tirith and ride shadowfax to the top of the city is by far one of the best scenes and people don't mention it enough. The music of Gondor is fantastic too.
1 - The start of the first movie where Hobbiton is shown; 2 - Aragorn singing in the marshes while hobbits sleep; 3 - Gandalf cleansing Theoden from Saruman; 4 - Merry and Pippin smoking Longbottom Leaf in Isengard and we see the Fellowship approaching.
Hands down most powerful moment: Theoden’s speech at Pelennor
A Journey in the Dark The Bridge of Kazad Dum The Departure of Boromir The Ride of the Rohirrim
+1 for a journey in the dark. My favourite piece of music from the trilogy too - especially when the camera pans out as Gandalf lights up the halls. Goosebumps every time.
“You smoke to much pip”
I keep lookin and scrolling but I can't find a pipeweed comment.
What’s beautiful is that if we combine all the comments here I am pretty sure we have almost all scenes in all three movies
1) Pippin song 2)The last march of the Ent 3) Theoden speech 4) Haldir arrival to the Helm deep
"I go to my fathers, in whose mighty company i shall not now feel ashamed"
Troll story time with uncle Bilbo.
Not in order of preference, but my take is the following: 1. Boromir redemption 2. Pippin singing for Denethor 3. Eowyn killing the witch king 4. Sam carrying Frodo up Mount Doom
1. Sams Speech at Two Towers 2. You bow to no one 3. The Beacons are lit 4. The Horn Helm Hammerhands 5. No Father should see his Childs death
1) walking past the big rock scene 2) everything else
Rohirrim charge no questions asked.
Four? -“For Frodo.” -The parting of Frodo and Sam.
Definitely Boromir’s death
Shelob's lair Gandalf telling Frodo about The Ring in Fellowship March of the ents Sam vs the orcs at Cirith Ungol
3) Gandalf vs the Balrog 4) The Two Towers, Boromir + Faramir flashback scene from the Extended Edition. Shows a the side of Boromir that he usually was, showed their brotherly connection, and planted the Denethor plot earlier in the trilogy which I think works a lot.
I will add: 1. Gandalf and gang release Theodin from Saruman and Wormtongue. 2. Aragorn honors the hobbits “My friends, you now to no one.” 3. Gollum and Sméagol’s argument that Sméagol wins. 4. Boromir’s last battle to save Merry and Pippin. Extra credit: Saruman and Gandalf’s fight in Orthanc
1) “But I can carry you!” moment (literally tearing up thinking of that scene lol) 2) “End? No the journey doesn’t end here…” speech from Gandalf to Pippin 3) “What are we holding onto Sam?” Sam’s speech at the end of the Two-Towers 4) “For Frodo” (Remaining fellowship’s suicide charge to distract Sauron)
1. You bow to no one 2. Theodreds burial 3. Butterbur hiding while the nazgul stalk past 4. Saruman delivering badass lines like 'you know of what i speak..' 5. Boromir finding solice on deathbed on the mention of 'his people' 6. Galadriel being absolutely badass and speaking in everyones mind after entering lothlorien
I like the whole book . ... .. . & The Hobbit book , also .
1. The beacons are lit 2. The juxtaposition of Gondor vs Frodo on the stairs, when Mordor’s army marches out 3. DEATH! 4. You bow to no one
1. Boromir's redemption (especially his last words to Aragorn "my brother, my captain, my king") goosepumps everytime! 2. Sam carrying Frodo 3. Theoden's speech (of course) 4. Merry & Pippin finding Saruman's stash of Longbottom leaf (lets say this to remember that this story has some great, innocent and joyfull moments)
1- Nazgûl sweeping the Prancing Pony 2- Balin’s tomb and the chamber of Mazarbur. 3- “No parent should have to bury their child” 4- Helms Deep horn
For Frodo
DEATHHHHHH
THEN LET US BE RID OF TI, ONCE FOR ALL! COMMON MISTER FRODO, I CAN'T CARRY IT FOR YOU, BUT I CAN CARRY YOU!!!
The Barrow Downs - Tom Bombadil saving the hobbits from the Barrow Wights and receiving their swords. Glorfindel saving the hobbits from the Nazgul, putting Frodo on his white horse Asfaloth, and telling the horse take Frodo to Rivendell The conspiracy formed by Sam, Merry, Pippin, Fredegar Bolger and Frodo's move to Crickhollow Gildor meeting with Frodo in the Shire running off the Nazgul, and telling Frodo what should be done. Frodo had greeted Gildor by saying, "Elen síla lúmenn' omentielvo" (A star shines upon the hour of our meeting) Impressed with his knowledge of the ancient tongue and lore he commended Frodo and named him Elf-friend.
"Bilbo, have you been at the Gaffer's homebrew?" "No! Well...yes, but but tha-tha-that-that's not the point!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkA3e0vaN-Y
You bow before no man.
Eomer when he finds Eowyn on the ground at Pelennor fields. That is the only time in the entire movie that we ever see this hardened warrior in absolute pieces. We see a big brother thinking he lost his sister alongside his uncle. And boy, did his scream of anguish rock me to the core.

1) Arwen’s rescue of Frodo, 2) Gandalf vs. the Balrog, 3) “My friends, you bow to no one”, 4) goodbyes at the Gray Havens and “Well, I’m back.” That’s just off the top of my head though!
1. Boromi's redemption and death 2. Aragorn's speech at the black gates 3. Pippin singing for Denethor 4. When the Ents attack Orthnac 5. "My friends, you bow to no one." 6. When Arwen has the vision of her son 7. Anything involving the Shire 8. Sam's speech Oh and the entire rest of the story
The ride of the rohirrim brings me to tears in the book and movie. That shit is amazing
1- Theoden mourning his son with Gandalf. 2- Theoden's speech at Helms Deep 3- Theoden's pause and answer to Gondor's call for aid: And Rohan shall answer! 4- Theoden's speech at Pelennor Fields His death and his cleansing/transformation move me less so. I also like plenty of Boromir scenes! Like the flashback with Faramir. And his scenes at Amon Hen.
Boromir and Theoden are the best characters in the Trilogy. They are the most human, and although flawed at times, they want what is best for their people.
From movies 1- Arwen facing the Nazgul 2- The fellowship sees the Argonaths for the first time (it was exactly as I dreamed while reading the books) 3-Boromirs heroic death 4- Theoden saves the day at the battle of Helms Deep From the books 1-Frodo and Sam meets Tom Bombadil. 2-Gandalf faces the Balrog 3-Gandalf vs. Witch King at the gates of Minsa Tirith 4-Eowyn killing the Witch King
The March of the ents 4 times
The list cannot be contained to just four moments Boromir taking to Aragorn about Minas Tirith in Lothlorian Boromir's last words Theoden standing before Theodred's tomb Merry and Pippin are told to go back to the Shire by Treebeard The last march of the ents Sam's monologue in Osgiliath The lighting of the Beacons The charge of the Rohirrim "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you!" Frodo departs Middle Earth
Gandalf's "You shall not pass!"–moment not being among *anyone's* favorite LOTR scenes should be a crime.
4. Sam’s speech at the end of the Two Towers 3.
Gandalfs speech to Pippin in Return of the king in Minas Tirith about Valinor and life after death is criminally underrated
1) Boromir’s last moments with Aragorn 2) DEATH 3) bridge of Kazhad Dûm 4) either the reforging of Narsil/anduril or Sam carrying Frodo Honestly there are so many that this list could change with my mood. But I will say that from the fellowship taking the Anduin River all the way to the end of the film is cinematic perfection! Acting, writing, cinematography, score, action, emotions, everything is *chefs kiss*
1. Fellowship leaving Rivendell 2. Pippen & Merry meet Treebeard 3. Gollum talking to himself (Two Towers) 4. The Fellowship reunited
Anything with 'ol Grandulf
Balrog chase The 13 sing song Every reinforcements scene Pippin song
“My friends you bow to no one” hits the feels so hard
DEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAATH
Gandalf riding down with the Rohirrim at Helm's Deep King Theoden's speech. Death! Death! DEATH! FORTH EORLINGAS! Gives me goosebumps every time. Boromir's death is always gut-wrenching. Samwise thwarting Shelob. That's the physical manifestation of everything Sam is, through and through.
Someone tell me what the 4 in the picture are? Ents, lembas bread, i know ur face, sam gets left behind by frodo cuz he got framed by smegol?
DEAAAAAAAAATH!!!!! DEAAAAAAAAAAATH!!!
1. The charge of the Rohirrim at Pelennor Fields. 2. Let this be the hour, that we draw swords together. 3. You bow to no one. 4. Amor Din. The lighting of the beacons.
1. Ride out and meet them, Forth Eorlingas! 2. Boromir redemption 3. Fellowship leaving Rivendell 4. I cant carry it for you, but I can carry you! 5. Gandalf vs the balrog
Any shot of New Zealand with that impeccable score. God how I miss that country.
**1. Why does it cry, Smeagol?** https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYpRSs7pzJo&list=FLc6lcWrNGbVSxcLngeMGmQg&index=13 **2. **HE TOOK IT** ( breadcrumbs part )** https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZ7gOHW_gAQ **3. Denathor tomato scene** https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZcByPzpCLw **4. Boromis thowing sticks to the ground** https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUZ29kEJLdE I like the acting and the passion expressed by the characters.
Also I low key fell in love with Arwen too haha) 2-DEATH (For obvious reasons!) The whole battle on Pellenor fields.
I love all of it but could be:\ -"where is the horse and the rider? where is the wind that was blowing?..."\ -"instead of a Dark Lord you will have a Queen!..."\ -"when did saruman the white abandon reason for madness!" *wizard fight*\ -"we shall have peace!" Also just to pick more than 4:\ -"I am no man!"\ -"mist and shadow, cloud and shade. All shall fade..."\ -"a new power is rising! it's victory is at hand!"
How can you expect us to pick four??? But ok here's mine in chronological order: 1) Frodo making the hard choice of taking the ring to Mordor during the Council of Elrond.
1- Ride of the Rohirrim at Pelennor 2- You bow to no one 3- Sam fightning Shelob 4- You’ll have to toss me
1. "Proud FEET!" 2. Scary Bilbo in Rivendell. 3. Gimli mentions a nervous system. 4. Breakdancing Gandalf in Orthanc.
Arwen vs 9 Nazgûl on the water. I know it’s supposed to be glorfindel, but I absolutely love Liv Tyler’s line Aragorn’s rush on Mordor at the black gates Gandalf and Frodo in front of the three doors in Moria The opening scene of the last alliance vs Sauron
“So do all who live to see such times but that is not for them to decide, all you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you.” “Death! Death! DEEAAATTH!” “Come on Mr. Frodo, I can’t carry the ring for you… but I can carry you!” “It was like in the stories, the ones that really mattered…”
This army
1. Hobbits hiding from the dark rider. 2. Sam and Frodo on the slopes of Mount Doom. 3. Strider introduction. 4. Ride of the Rohirrim. And about 100 more scenes.
1. Galadrlel helping Frodo stand up when he falls after throwing Gollum down the ledge 2. Gandalf, Eomer and other riders as they are about to charge to Helm's deep 3. Bilbo and Gandalf looking down at Bilbo's birthday party being prepared 4. The scene where it's only Gandalf sitting on some boxes (or a bench?) during Faramir's charge, it lasts a couple of seconds and I always think it's very beautiful
whats top left? its so compressed i cant tell at all whats going on.
the last march of the ents
1. Lightening of the Beacons 🔥🔥🔥 2. Ride of the Rohirrim 3. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli chasing the Uruk Hai 4. Gandalf Telling Frodo about the truth of his Ring in Hobbiton
The lighting of the beacons (and the following scene: "Gondor calls for aid!" *beat* "And Rohan will answer!") When Aragorn receives Andúril, aka the re-forged Narsil: "They believe nothing. They answer to no one." - "They will answer to the king of Gondor!" Eowyn (and Merry) vs the Witch King "My friends, you bow to no one."
1. Gandalf talking to Pippin about death in Minas Tirith 2. Frodo and Gandalf leaving Middle-Earth at the end 3. Ride of the Rohirrim 4. Boromir’s death
My no.1 will always be Eowyn saving Theoden and Theoden's dying scene with Eowyn. Haldir's arrival at Helm's Deep. Gandalf releasing Theoden from Saruman's spell.
“Rosie…Cotton….dancing. She had ribbons in her hair. If ever I was to marry someone, it would have been her. It would have been HER…”
1- I made a Promise Mr Frodo, A Promise 2- There is still some good left in this world, and its worth fighting for 3- For Frodo 4- My Friends you bow to no one
1. Sam's speech at the end of Two Towers 2. Pippin's song for Denethor 3. Rohirrim charge on Pelennor Fields 4. "My friends... you bow to no one."
1/2 - Théoden’s in two scenes. Both on Pelennor Fields. 3 - Sam on Mt. Doom 4 - Aragon and everyone bowing to the Hobbits
"Gondor has fallen. There is no Hope for Men. https://preview.redd.it/a9vt0pryubxc1.jpeg?width=1614&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=75fa3ed21fc5edfe8aa2576913459ff90ab311cd
How could I possibly choose? Oh man... okay... uhhh... how about: 1. 5. Boromir's redemption 6. Home is behind, the world ahead. 7. Give them a moment for pitys sake!! 8. Don't. Follow. The lights. 9. The first introduction of the Fellowship walking over the hill 10. Fighting the Balrog in full 11. Basically every grand sweeping over land or kingdoms with epic music 12. Every. Single. Scene. In every. Damn. Movie. 🤣😭
Theoden took way too long to die
