Great quote! Carla was such a good presence in that house and I’m glad the kids had access to her. I’ve noticed the actress who plays her (Deborah Lacey) is very active on various popular Mad Men instagram accounts. If you say something nice about Carla there she’ll certainly get to see it and probably respond.

moonshamen

Wow, thanks! I’ll definitely check out her instagram.

Willdanceforyarn

Yes, she is and she’s very kind!

Mundane_Safety_4896

Betty did Clara dirty tho.

PossiblyExtra_22

She sure did. It was a really cruel thing she did to Carla AND the kids. I think she was so angry that she just wanted to hurt someone who couldn’t fight back, the way she couldn’t when Don treated her the way he did

breadburn

Oh for sure. Probably TMI, I see a lot of similarities between Betty and my own mom. She'd never stand up to my dad even when he hurt her so she'd take it out on whoever was in the way first-- and for Betty, it was unfortunately Carla in that moment. #justice4carla

moonshamen

Absolutely. I’m usually a Betty defender but that was unforgivable.

NoQuarter6808

"This never happened. It will shock you how much it never happened." Don said this to Peggy in the hospital after her pregnancy. As somebody who went to treatment for alcohol abuse at the end of 2022, thinking about this both before and after I started rebuilding my life has been helpful, though in different ways.

PieRemote2270

Agree

Willdanceforyarn

Treatment is such a powerful and important process. Good for you for doing it and moving forward.

My favourite quote of all is from the scene where Pete confronts Bert with Don's false identity. Bert says "The Japanese have a saying- a man is whatever room he stands in." To me that is a great explanation for the often, contradictory nature of people.

CobraPowerTek

Bert is a phoney. Japan, Rand, intellectual, heartless businessman, avuncular sage. He's a lot of affect and pretense, he only values money, power and his inflated sense of self.

Telemetris

I like that one and i like "This never happened. You will be shocked how much this never happened"

TheBowlofBeans

That's not a healthy mindset at all though, that's just Don projecting onto Peggy. We realize it's not a healthy mindset when he's forced to finally confront his emotions in the hippie camp

TheGhostOfCamus

It's healthy if you channel it the right way.

BeaverDonkey

It's quite basic, but "That's what the money is for" rings in my head quite often. And I have a good boss who knows how to praise people's achievements... and yet

ThisAlsoIsntRealLife

I think about this with Doctors all the time. Like - I'm paying you! But a better version.

ImmanualKant

I just watched this episode and loved this quote!

moonshamen

It’s so simple and yet so perfect. Plus, it’s really good advice!

sugarpants11

Same, last night 😂 whenever I’m rewatching the series, this quote always pops up when I need it most

ben80996

Bobbie Barrett tells Peggy, “You have to start living the life of the person you want to be”. So profound!

Minmil19

I bet you made yourself a copywriter

stupifystupify

Mines “I don’t think about you at all.”

HappyOrca2020

I used this on someone I disliked. It hits hard.

Bearcarnikki

It is my favorite too. I use it because I am often worried people are mad at me if they act “off” even a little. It really has an impact on being able to acknowledge internally they are going through their own shit and it has nothing to do with me.

SlammyJones

I mean, good luck and all the best to you, but that was a clearly petty and small and threatened moment on Don’s part.

breadburn

Right! On a rewatch, with all the context surrounding it, it was an absolute lie. Don, in his mind, HAD to win but can't let Ginsburg know it was consuming him like that.

SlammyJones

Like, almost literally one shot cut later he chooses to leave Ginsberg’s pitch in the cab in an explicitly petty and scared gesture.

breadburn

Yep. Don't not typically petty but this was one of the pettiest and more cowardly moves in the series IMO. Like he is the creative director of a very talented team but still needs all the victories to be personal.

SlammyJones

“There are no fresh starts! Lives carry on.”

revengeofkittenhead

I find myself saying “Not great, Bob” probably more than anything else.

breadburn

Hard same. It's just so useful.

AppeaseTheComet

When something goes wrong at work I’ll often tell my coworkers: “it’s a business of sadists and masochists, and you know which one you are.”

Cranstonoid

The universe is indifferent.

cabalavatar

I still maintain the best one (tho I guess for me) is Don's quote about people telling us who they are. We all know it. It shouldn't be deep, and yet in a world of toxicity and narcs running most of it, we could all use the reminder.

Stinkfascist

I think thats cribbed from a Maya Angelou quoatation

moonshamen

Definitely a good one!

Cynth_pop29

I don't know if live by, but this one really really resonates with me. "Because there are people out there who buy things, people like you and me. And something happened. Something terrible. And the way that they saw themselves is gone. And nobody understands that. But you do. And that’s very valuable."

ThisAlsoIsntRealLife

I love this quote! Five stars cus I'm broke ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

ThisAlsoIsntRealLife

Don't go to the well, there's no water.there. Oh Trudy I love you...so supportive and honest.

breadburn

It's true. Trudy deserved better.

BlueonBlack26

The universe is indifferent

SnooPickles8893

It's Black girl magic 🪄✨ 😍

moonshamen

Carla is such a great character. I love the scene with her and Betty after JFK was shot. The way she just plops down on the sofa and (I think?) lights a cigarette. Like, “Screw it. The world’s gone mad and I need to sit down.”

roophis

“Take a pill, and lie down.”

Improvcommodore

“A man is whatever room he is in.”

3l34ms

I love this quote. Being English my second language, I have a question for the native speakers: do you find the use of 'right' and 'left' in this sentence as clever as I do? I think that the dichotomy of the two opposite sides, paired with 'right' meaning 'correct', is very interesting... especially considering that, at a first level, here 'right' means only 'exactly' and left is simply the past tense of 'leave'. I don't know if it even makes sense, but I love the possibility to read it at a deeper level, as "things are just as they should be, even if in your head they're wrong". Edit: maybe you don't think about this at all.

pamcakezzz

Interesting observation. I am a native English speaker, and I didn't think of it this way, but that doesn't diminish your perspective on it.

TheProdigalBootycall

Interesting to compare this to the quote about losing her father to dementia a few episodes later. Betty's father is losing his mental acuity after a stroke, and Viola tells her "The minute you leave, you'll remember him exactly the way he used to be. It's all good outside that door." In some ways, a reiteration of the same idea - go outside and step away from the problem. In others, the exact opposite. Nothing will be where she left it when she comes back, or really ever again. An aside: this occurs as Betty is deciding what to do about Don "stepping outside" of their marriage. Both quotes could be applied to their marital situation, and the transition from one to the other potentially represents the evolution of her decision. When they speak back at the house, Don says she needs him and she says, "Nothing has changed. We were just pretending." She splashed cold water on her face and went outside, and everything is right where she left it.

Jrebeclee

I just rewatched the firing scene. So awful. Not even letting her say goodbye to those children!

pushinpayroll

Can someone explain this to me like I’m 5? I have never really understood it. I have anxiety and doing stuff like this has never worked for me but I have always noticed how comforted Betty seemed after hearing it. Is it sort of like when you splash water on your face and go outside you can see that problems aren’t as big as we make them out to be? Or does it renew perspective somehow?

Optimal_Assist_4105

I see it as a way to get out of anxiety/overwhelm spiral. Splash the water on your face to shock your system a bit and then get outside to get some air and reset. You come back in and everything is the same, but it feels a little easier to handle.

moonshamen

Very well said. I’ll add that, for me, it really helps with my anxiety. I have a tendency to be a bit of a hermit and sometimes I spend too much time online or watching news and getting even more anxious. Getting outside or going for a drive gives me a better perspective about things. Gets me out of my head.

Wiccidwitch

When I’m alone with my thoughts, the room gets crowded.

movetoseattle

OK, not a medical expert but in my experience/opinion cooling parts of your body off slows things down a bit probably helping counteract an adrenaline rush that might be a contributing cause of upset. So you can think more clearly.

DrawingNo2972

There is a thing - I forget what it's called, the drowning reflex maybe - where if you immerse your face in cold water it slows your metabolism. It's an evolutionary thing which conserves as much oxygen in the system should you be drowning. It' a hangover from our evolutionary, reptilian past (from memory). That would account for slowing of heartbeat and feeling calmer.

movetoseattle

neat, did not know this!

MarsupialTrousers

I think it’s kind of like the exercise you do when you have a fear of flying, particularly turbulence. If you stop and look at 5 things around you (liquid in the glass, people reading, etc) you’ll see that the plane is not moving excessively. Your feelings are just that…. Not grounded in reality. Different perspectives are all you need.

Desperate_Expert_952

I feel I’m more like Ginsburg when he cuts his nipple off.
