My favorite commander, but yeah I usually have to point out that she's sitting on a throne-ish-deal made of Phyrexian tentacles if someone asks what's going on with the art.
Damn it, I had this one in my head the other day and told myself "absolutely don't forget Kraken Hatchling for that article."
I forgot Kraken Hatchling. Thanks for mentioning it.
I feel like when it comes to Ron Spencer (my favorite MTG artist, btw), the art director just says "okay, we want you to paint this card, and it needs to feature x, show y action, and have z mood," and Ron says "got it, you want a lot of purple and roughly 500 spikes."
To help with the confusion of [[Signal Pest]], Signal Pest is actually an "updated" version of Fifth Dawn's [[Thermal Navigator]], now purposed with scouting the Phyrexian army instead of its original purpose of scouting the landscape.

To be fair, seeing the art larger helps a lot in many cases.
It's a shame but playing-card size format doesn't lend itself well to the extremely detailed art that some cards have.
That's a big reason why I dislike certain secrets lairs. Like the one one they did a while back that had these huge wheres Waldo style cityscape. Cool art, horrible on a small card frame
Ironically I feel like I can usually see details better when a real paper card is in front of me and I can get my face close to it.
Maybe that is just because I am not in the habit of bringing my phone or computer screens super duper close to my face tho.
For me it was [[Urabrask, the Hidden]]. I never really noticed the leg in the background since it's in shadow, so I always thought he was some weird Y shaped thing with a tail.
Like Phyrexian Yveltal.
For over 10 years the only other art of him was [[act of aggression]] which in and of itself has issues because it makes him look like he's the size of [[auntie blyte]].
I find the whole group of the alt-arts that look like Rorschach ink blots from ONE to be confusing in general. I know they've got plenty of fans, but those were my least favorite alt-art style by FAR for this reason.
When I first saw [[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]] , I wasn't familiar with the character, and thought the space between her lower horns and her face were her eyes, and that her lower torso was a mouth
To be fair, given the full art of [[Sheoldred the whispering one]] actually having a mouth on the lower torso (through which she spoke from along other things), it's not that bad of a mistake. Hell, maybe intentional in her design tho I doubt it
It took me dozens of MKM drafts until I realized that [[Seasoned Consultant]] is not a centaur. Somehow that table to her right became a horse body in my mind...
I thought [[Merfolk Trickster]] was [the guy](https://i.imgur.com/DTSArgH.png), and the merfolk was the tail (and the merfolk's arm was a staff or something, being through downwards from his hands).
Many from years ago
It's not that uncommon a topic that's discussed but more importantly this is also how research and journalism works isn't it. A collaboration of ideas of themes put into a concise article with some secondary and primary sources.
Hell the article even mentioned and linked to a reddit post regarding palinchron for example.
Now "more" people get to see it in one place vs scrolling through a thread filled with nonsense
[This](https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/s/qLi5cTGkFj) comment thread had a bunch. It just caught me off guard. Neat article to bring attention to it though.
[[Skrelv, Defector Mite]] for me. I always fail to see skrelv at first glance and thin it's butt is actually it's head, like some kind of centipede pouncing to the left.
Arena's animation helps visualize the art. Uro's head and hand are descending upon a boat and some people and the Arena animation summons a giant Uro face to descend into the battlefield.
Kinda reminds me of how in Cthulu mythos the scale of those beings are so immense that human minds have trouble processing the scale of those eldritch titans.
I think it may have been because I had a dark printing of it, but I thought [[Primal Huntbeast]] was a buffalo like creature for the longest time. I just couldn’t see its face.
[[Ixhel, Scion of Atraxa]] : the bottom "legs" are wings, the middle "cape" was legs and I thought she was singing.
[My first impression interpretation done with paint here](https://imgur.com/a/mQrqIAj)
♫ I love to sing-a, About the moon-a and the June-a and the spring-a...♫
It’s not that confusing to anyone else, but for the longest time I thought the OG Karma art was a smiling worm with a mustache swimming beneath the sea
I thought blood artist was painting one of their victims, bleeding out on the table, rather than another vampire (because he cares about creatures dying), and we are seeing it from the perspective of said victim.
You're right. I always assumed it was a vampire he was painting because of the blood coming from the "model's" mouth, but Voss himself said otherwise:
https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/s/exLGA5sxxd
This is not the first time I've seen someone say they see a monkey in Meathook's art. How are people mistaking a severed hand for a funny little monkey?!
[[ISD|Ghost Quarter]] has always confused me, I think just because of how literally dark the art is. It looks like a ship sailing towards some spired buildings, waves crashing at a fountain on the shore. I'm 90% sure the "waves" are supposed to be "ghosts", or at least the foggy air that comes with them in Magic, and I'm 50% sure the "boat" is a carriage of some kind.
I always thought [[Nimble Mongoose | MH1]] was a horned goat like creature. Never registered in my brain what a mongoose was. Finally, I saw the horns as a snake that a cute little furry guy was destroying like two days ago.
Most are just funny, but i'm legit MAD about this article correcting my interpretation of Signal Pest. What I saw before was so much cooler than reality... =(
The face is hard to make out tiny sized, (though much clearer in a [full-size version of the art](https://www.artofmtg.com/art/ruthless-technomancer/)), but what I personally can't figure out is the clothes.
So he's got reddish padded armor on top, and underneath that is a black robe, the interior of which is floral patterned (and under that, dark violet jumpsuit with wrapped forearms). But somehow, he's flourishing his left arm holding the sacrifice in such a way that the inside of the robe sleeve is flung out in two directions.
But what is the garment that can show much of the inside of a sleeve? The robe at the bottom looks normal. Did he slice his sleeves open? Is it an unrelated blanket resting on his arm?
I tried looking up a bunch of traditional Japanese clothing and I can't find anything arranged like that.
Idk about confusing, but here's some I always mess up
[[Goblin Nabber]] ALWAYS looks like [this](https://imgur.com/a/NXN3OqV) to me, with a helmet
[[Nascent Metamorph]] looks like it's spitting water, but its... not
[[Glissa the Traitor]] is NOT a snake
I always thought [[benalish trapper]] showed the trapped person howling in anger at the unseen trapper who is high up on a ledge to the right. Only recently did I actually look close enough to see the 'ledge' was actually a pit with a phyrexian fallen into it.
I thought for the longest time that [[Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite]] had a white face facing left and was holding a giant scythe.
It's only when she got more art with All will be one that I understood what the structure of her face.
pretty much most, if not all of cards depicting Archon. just do searches on any archon art. Archon (aka. ruler) is the rider, not the mount. the art seems to always depicts and emphasizes the mount.
i got active in the hobby around OG theros and one my favorite card was [[Ashen Rider]]. it took me a year before i realize that archon is not the cat beast with wing. i should have known, the word Rider is in the damn name.
\[\[Suntail Hawk\]\] has too many legs
originally printed in Judgement, nobody told the artist what birds look like. they've repeated the error on every revision since, refusing to own up to it.

Almost all of these examples were in a reddit thread last week.
That's what modern journalism is, browsing reddit and then making a listicle.
Many from years ago It's not that uncommon a topic that's discussed but more importantly this is also how research and journalism works isn't it. A collaboration of ideas of themes put into a concise article with some secondary and primary sources. Hell the article even mentioned and linked to a reddit post regarding palinchron for example. Now "more" people get to see it in one place vs scrolling through a thread filled with nonsense
Fair, just caught me off guard with the similarity. Plus the article does bring attention some others as well.
Link?
[This](https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/s/qLi5cTGkFj) comment thread had a bunch. It just caught me off guard. Neat article to bring attention to it though.

I still [[Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath]] is confusing art. Still don't know what it is!
His feet and hand angles in the back/foreground mixed with his face looks like he is mid-trip after stumbling over some boats
Arena's animation helps visualize the art. Uro's head and hand are descending upon a boat and some people and the Arena animation summons a giant Uro face to descend into the battlefield.
Clearly it’s a titan…of nature’s wrath…
Holy shit, it's a kelp man pogging. I always thought it was like some tornados or something

[[ISD|Ghost Quarter]] has always confused me, I think just because of how literally dark the art is. It looks like a ship sailing towards some spired buildings, waves crashing at a fountain on the shore. [[Ruthless Technomancer]] is one I can't figure out
assuming you mean the face? it's a warped human like [[maga traitor]] from old kamigawa

I always thought [[benalish trapper]] showed the trapped person howling in anger at the unseen trapper who is high up on a ledge to the right. Only recently did I actually look close enough to see the 'ledge' was actually a pit with a phyrexian fallen into it.

I just saw the episode of shuffle up, which highlights how everyone thinks Dan Dan is the boats

[[Dragon fodder]] makes it look like the one goblin is giant https://scryfall.com/card/mm3/93/dragon-fodder

\[\[Suntail Hawk\]\] has too many legs originally printed in Judgement, nobody told the artist what birds look like. they've repeated the error on every revision since, refusing to own up to it.

[[Dandan]]! It's two boats!
I thought \[\[Intrepid Adversary\]\] was a dog with a little lantern tied to him for a long time.
\[\[Mutagenic Growth\]\] always saw a big monstruous frog jumping over a guy. It's just a man morphing into a phyrexian
I only until recently saw the actual mermaid in [[mermaid secretkeeper]] and always thought the lady she was drowning was the mermaid
When I wasn’t used to Slivers, I always thought [[Heart Sliver]]s claw is its head. Btw, that artwork gives me some serious Super Metroid vibes.
[[Thraximundar]] is the correct answer. It took me years and the Secret Lair art to finally figure out wtf is happening in the art.
