Our neighbors have 2 out of 3 cars with expired tags. He is a PhD mathematician. My wife now watches cars while we drive. There are so many expired tags out there. I don't get it.

ncblake

He understands probabilities, unfortunately.

Southern-Tailor-8177

Ha!

iNCharism

I noticed that my aunt had expired tags as well. I asked her about it and she said she had the new ones, but noticed that police don’t care, so she didn’t change to the new ones deliberately to see how long she can last. It’s been 3 years.

Drict

I had expired tags once, I literally didn't even realize it! I would let them know (they may have forgotten). If they don't fix it, then it is probably ok, because if they get pulled, they go to court, apologize, and have it fixed before the court date and it is MOST LIKELY WAVED if it is within 6 months.

762_54r

The MVA didn't email me or send me a letter or anything for my most recent renewal. I was looking at the MVA site for other reasons and saw the date was in less than a week so I renewed while I was there. Same thing for my emissions test due date (I was actively checking for that though since I was already concerned they wouldn't contact me). I'm not sure what the deal is.

abooth43

Yea I swore that I used to get reminders or possibly even had them auto renewed. I realized last week that 2 of my 3 cars expired a few months ago and had to go renew them online.

pc81rd

I only got a letter 3 weeks in advance this last time (still better than the no notification you got, though). I used to get an email and snail mail 2-3 months in advance. I wonder what changed

762_54r

I also used to get emails. I'm waiting for my other car's emissions to be due to see if I get notified this time - they used to send you a physical form that you take with you to the test. Edit: actually next up is my license expiration, then emissions next year and the year after on my 2 cars. So I will absolutely forget, maybe I should just set calendar reminders now.

frecklefaerie

Seriously. The cops are on my ass immediately with their fancy camera cars as soon as I'm expired. :/

wbruce098

> He is a PhD mathematician. So unless he works at NSA he’s probably broke and in debt.

GingerMan027

If I told you, they'd have to kill me.

pretty-late-machine

Don't worry. They'll pull me over if I have my car at the mechanic while the registration expires and I forget to bring my stickers before driving it ten miles away to my home. 😔

GattMourley

I got a ticket for expired tags last year. My tags were not expired. Everything was in order, stickers intact, but still a ticket. I reached out and they said if I wanted to not pay I'd have to take off work and come to court.

Mysterious_Truck_742

I’m like your wife…I notice cars with a missing lug nut

_losdesperados_

I posted about this a month ago and my post was taken down. It’s ridiculous that our law enforcement doesn’t give a shit about this.

Msolemeows1

Oh trust, they do depending on what area you’re in and what color skin you have.

Sensitive_ManChild

what are they supposed to do about it? give them a $60 ticket for displaying expired registration, with no points mind you? yea. big penalty.

sllewgh

Yes, that's exactly what they're supposed to do about it. Enforce the law with the penalties the law provides.

dweezil22

20 years ago my Dad's coworker was driving with plates 1 day expired and she got pulled over TWICE on the way home. She showed her warning ticket to the second cop and he laughed and let her go. Like... this isn't anarchy, YES ppl should be getting ticketed for this stuff. Hell, take a photo and mail it to them the same way speed cameras work so you don't need to go through the effort and risk of an actual traffic stop!

esem86

Yerp. When I was in my 20s my friend group played pickup football on the weekends. I had forgotten to get my tags renewed and couldn't go til Monday and I figured...15 min drive...I know it's wrong but it can't be that bad. Was pulled over 5 minutes away from the field. People have no understanding of how little cops do these days. It's unbelievable what you can get away with.

Working_Fuel7473

PWC resident here. One of my neighbors was using one set of tags for two cars. I wrote an email to PWC parking enforcement and within a week one of the cars had new tags.

tacitus59

30+ years ago - police would go into apartment complexes looking for out-of-state plates and if the car had been there for too long - it would be ticketed and possibly towed. Registration and insurance is just a tax on the non-criminal class; huge fines if you have a car insurance glitch - but then this shit happens. [edit: I was thinking back, my first HoCo was paper - and I got it replace in either the late 80s or early 90s because it fell apart]

[deleted]

Would you know if they were issuing those tickets? They very well could be and people are ignoring them which simply results in a suspended registration or they’re paying them but not renewing.

sllewgh

If enforcement was happening, ignoring tickets wouldn't be an option in the first place. You'd get more and worse tickets.

[deleted]

True, your license and registration would eventually get suspended. The other option is simply paying the tickets. Small fine every blue moon (remember millions of cars drive in Maryland and the DMV area everyday along with 295 average crashes a day in Maryland police respond to. 16,000 cops in the state total. Divide my multiple shifts and cut in half for days off, exclude some for training, annual leave, sick leave, injury, admin, command staff, detectives and specialty units. You run out for patrol quickly. For highways State Police have a minimum of two troopers for Rockville, College Park, Forestville, Waterloo, and Golden Ring Barracks)

sllewgh

>The other option is simply paying the tickets. Small fine every blue moon Again, it wouldn't be "every blue moon" if there were actual enforcement.

[deleted]

Sorry, read my update

sllewgh

Use cameras. This is not a complicated problem.

[deleted]

Cameras are civil violations. Worst that happens is registration is flagged for Maryland plates preventing renewal. [See this for out of state drivers](https://wbaltv.com/article/data-out-of-state-drivers-speeding-ticket-jfx-not-paying-up/44066805). Additionally, I believe the law would have to change to allow for cameras to ticket for expired plates but I’d have to research that

Talkimas

If I'm going to get pulled over 4 times (and ticketed once) in the space of 3 years for not having a front license plate, then yeah, people should absolutely be getting pulled over for expired registration.

Sensitive_ManChild

i’m guessing you have a maryland plate. so it’s not legal for you to do that. Out of state? who knows. maryland laws don’t address what other states require. so they won’t be pulled over for that. Maryland laws also don’t cover where other states have their registration displayed or how, for example Maryland the tabs are always on the rear. Other states have a weird sticker in their front window. Which again leads to why a VA plate, even if does seem weird, not being pulled over, because also, you not having a front plate can be seen from two miles away. a messed up out of state plate, not so much.

Southern-Tailor-8177

Why would the lack of points be dissuasive here? Genuinely curious

762_54r

Points can impact you more than a small one-time fee. Insurance rates, possible suspension of license.

Sensitive_ManChild

Because if this is someone who is using a VA plate to avoid tolls, fees, parking tickets, whatever, than the relatively small chance they will be pulled over, combined with a one time fee…. isn’t really a deterrent

outphase84

My wife got pulled over back in 2018ish with expired tags that we never got a renewal notice for and they hit her with a $250 fine and towed the vehicle. Whole thing cost us about $1300 when all was said and done.

Sensitive_ManChild

again, Maryland vehicle?

outphase84

Maryland, but that’s irrelevant. MD code requires any vehicle driven on roads in the state to display a license plate or plates as required in the state of registration, and you cannot display an expired plate. Md Code 13-411: > (f) Except as otherwise expressly permitted by the Maryland Vehicle Law, a vehicle used or driven in this State may not display on either its front or rear any expired registration plate issued by any state.

Sensitive_ManChild

uh huh. and the fine is? $70. no points. like i said above. except they apparently made it $10 more than i thought. If it’s an innocent mistake, you very possibly will receive a warning. If you are using an out of state plate to engage in nefarious activities, which everyone here seems to believe is what’s happening a lot, than it’s worth the risk a $70 ticket.

outphase84

The fine is similar to a speeding fine in that it _starts_ at $70. My wife received a $250 fine. Police can also tow and impound the vehicle. Which happened to her. It cost us about a grand in towing and storage fees to get the vehicle back.

sparkycat99

That was in 2018! Now they seem not to bother.

kidphc

Same here but was in moco,MD about 2014. $2500 or so after fines and impound.

homer_3

Taking an extra 30 min to get anywhere + an extra $60 any time you go out is a pretty hefty penalty. I don't care who you are. Even billionaires don't like giving away their money.

Sensitive_ManChild

again. it’s the very extremely rare possibility of a $60 fine. Maybe you get pulled over. maybe you don’t. maybe you get cited. maybe you don’t. Might happen once in a couple year stretch. MAYBE.

crystalli0

When I was in college (in another state) I forgot to change the sticker on my license plate and had expired tags for a month or two by accident. My apartment complex let a tow company tow away cars that expired tags, flat tires, etc. and they towed my car. Cost me $150 to get it back, and I never forget to update my sticker anymore

KodakDC

In Maryland it's actually up to a **$500** fine for expired tags and they can tack on other penalties and restrictions for the driver. I got hit with one once a month after it expired when getting a parking ticket in the employee lot which I had a pass for but forgot to swap in the new one on the first of the month. First offense and it was $200. I was PISSED.

Sensitive_ManChild

IF it’s a maryland car yes it can get bad. multiple tickets, pick up orders, suspensions etc All that being enforced in maryland on a non maryland car? Slim

True_Leather75

what are they supposed to do about it. “literally says exactly what they’re supposed to do”

Sensitive_ManChild

and again, as i’ve explained elsewhere. Either this is an innocent mistake, which fine, maybe they’ll get a ticket maybe a warning and fix the issue. OR this is someone doing this so they can commit other things like avoid tolls and speed cameras etc, and the threat of maybe possibly getting a ticket once a year is worth it.

762_54r

Why does anyone give a shit about it? Are you upset that Virginia didn't tax this guy enough?

_losdesperados_

It’s probably a fake VA plate as well. People living in MD with VA plates are often committing crimes because the tags are not easily traceable. Those of us who pay the outrageous MVA fees are treated like dirt while these delinquent drivers are allowed to drive all over the state like a bunch of idiots. I see VA tags that are sometimes years out of expiration. https://preview.redd.it/d2vx3r0pp7ic1.jpeg?width=806&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ac187c22929195be79b27860aed0335912db75a1

onedayinthesun

WTF. This is such a grossly overarching assumption to assume that all expired VA plates in MD are "often committing crimes" instead of y'know, visiting a neighboring state or going to work on the other side of the border or as other people have mentioned here from personal experience, accidentally forgotten. I refuse to believe that people actually think like this & and that this isn't rage bait.

dweezil22

A better way to say it is that "People that want to commit crimes and get away with it have these available to use". At this point if you're in Northern MD and see expired VA plates Occam's Razor is that it's someone deliberating avoiding paying MD fees (and/or having proper car insurance), which is damaging to the community as a whole. What's maddening is that there seems to be no middle ground between racist Broken Window and stop-and-frisk bullshit and completely ignoring enforcing basic licensing and registration laws. Enforcing proper insurance and registration laws in the state will help fund the state and make it a safe place to drive.

_losdesperados_

You said it perfectly, thank you.

_losdesperados_

It’s not rage bait. If you lived in Balt city you would understand. People who are law abiding keep their papers in order. There is a pattern of people who specifically get VA plates, let them expire and drive and act like assholes because the police are not enforcing these laws. Try to see it from both perspectives. If you can’t keep up with a proper vehicle registration, you shouldn’t be operating a car.

Similar_Chipmunk_682

I saw a car last week that tags expired on 08/16. The oldest one I saw before that was 2019. I understand that there was some leeway during the pandemic but damn.

Cappster_

That's nothing. Last week I saw a VA temp tag that expired in 2021.

r33k3r

Am I missing something? Doesn't this just mean they stuck both Year stickers on one plate instead of one on front and one on rear? I mean, I get it's an expired registration but doesn't seem like some big deal. For all we know, when law enforcement runs the plate it may show that it was renewed and this person just hasn't put the stickers on, since clearly they have trouble with correctly applying stickers.

count_strahd_z

Yeah, I bet they put both month stickers on the other plate.

[deleted]

That’s what either the dealer or Virginia DMV did to my tags when I picked them up from the dealer. Dealer said it was the DMVs fault and the DMV said it was the dealer that put the stickers on and wanted me to pay for another set of stickers. I ended up just leaving it like this person. Too much hassle for something that’s not really a problem

kermelie

Very unlikely they ran an out of state plate. They don’t even stop expired in state plates.

r33k3r

Many agencies have automatic plate readers that read every plate they encounter.

MikeyLikeyPhish

How many hubcaps is it missing?

ChemicalElevator1380

Shit I've seen paper tags expired 3 years ago

National-Ad-30

This is probably because the idiots put both of the year tags on one plate instead of one year tag on one plate and the other year tag on the other plate, because the month tag is a totally different color… Of course, not to mention there are only 12 months in one year. Virginia requires two tags on cars.

[deleted]

It's actually a side effect of covid lockdowns and the fact the MVA is still like 8 months behind or something like that. The mail system is still also very jacked from Trump ordering sorting machines dismantled to try to help win the election in 2020. The police in DC actually stopped pulling people over for tags because it started overwhelming them with paperwork and court cases, I suspect it's the case around MD due to the problems.

mrm0324

That’s a weird symbol to be on a Nissan Altima.

InsuranceMD123

LOL! I've been seeing a lot of tags still showing 23 lately which is nuts being I got pulled over 2 weeks after my registration expired because I forgot to put the sticker on.

ceedeeze

I’ve been wondering why are there SO MANY Virginia plates in the city???

DrummerBusiness3434

A few months ago there was a sign poked into the ground at the intersection of Pulaski Hwy & I-95, advertising the public to get VA tags and registrations for their cars. https://preview.redd.it/h6cxrmw498ic1.png?width=804&format=png&auto=webp&s=04ea5f4c7b78b7082b73548338a4c0b8744ed028

28TeddyGrams

I saw this same plate in the harbor tunnel last week and remarked on it to my wife. 😂🤦🏾‍♂️

chadcad1967

In 1999, I got pulled in Reisterstown at night for having expired tags, I was 8 months pregnant with a broken left leg in a boot, and he took the tags off my car and told me I couldn't drive, I could walk. I asked him if the balto co police really wanted the optics of leaving a pregnant woman with a broken leg on the side of the road. He offered to drop me at the Exxon station. Now they don't care about tags.

CyberpunkF1

Apparently the MVA has started an investigation about this and are sending letters out to the people involved. Hope they finally get these assholes.

[deleted]

That’s just the year sticker. I had the same issue. The DMV or dealership put two year stickers on the back and two month stickers on the front tag when I got the tags

ray111718

Lousy Smarch weather

Sure_Fact7761

Lol was it in Baltimore?

BaltWinFoundation

😭They know exactly why everybody got Virginia tags. No harassment and all the fees and tickets. We haven’t had amnesty since when? I’ll wait…. But they keep adding reasons to prevent you from getting tags,

nubz0389

God forbid you pay your fines

BigBobFro

Lol!! Total dipshit owner from VA I repeat myself

thrownaway-867-5309

That's not a phony tag... it's just someone who didn't know how to put the stickers on correctly.

sadlyincognito

how do you know it’s expired?

Aklu_The_Unspeakable

BFD

Mysterious_Truck_742

Why the cops always hassling me?

timedirection225

I’ve never understood people who do this.

CRRVA

So everyone on here talking about expired tags, how about this dumbass that put the wrong sticker on? How do you mess this up, when the box on the tag (Before sticking on the sticker) reads “MONTH” on one corner and “YEAR” on the other corner? Wonder what the front tag looks like?

Far_Sector_8221

Wow you all are really mad about expired tags in here, even notifying police about a neighbor using a tag for two different is insane to me.
