It's for static discharging.
A while back, there were issues where people would get back in their cars while filling up, when they get out to finish up, the ass across seat would build static and discharge at the pump end, starting fires (apocryphal, I've never heard it happen).
Thank goodness for that, i was pumping gas the other day and some person told me to shut my car off. I said go watch mythbusters between drags of my cigarette
Are you talking about if you hit a telephone pole and you’re not supposed to get out because of electricity and all that.my mom used to tell me that as a kid lol.
No, they're talking about static discharge from cell/mobile phones causing fuel pump fires. It's a false narrative. You definitely need to be careful if you come across downed electrical lines.
That advice from mom is correct advice. If you get into an accident or your car is otherwise disabled and there are downed power lines you should stay put unless you absolutely have to move. Way to go mom!
What’s funny is my dad had an MX-3 and when I was younger I would keep touching it because I thought it activated something. My dad even speculated it controlled something that maybe wasn’t working. I miss that car.
All planes, old and new. It's technically a bonding wire. Keeps the aircraft and the truck/pump at the same electrical potential so that no difference will develop and discharge between the fill port and nozzle. Not needed on single point connections due to the positive lock, it's built in. Less necessary with Jet A vs 100LL Avgas due to the higher flash point of the kerosene derivatives, but still worth it.
Planes and helicopters can develop a nasty static charge, especially when its raining.
When longlining equipment with a helicopter the ground crew frequently get zapped when receiving the load.
There are other things that conduct electricity besides metal. Some types of plastics (like that touch spot) can accumulate and dissipate static charge. Also, carpets and such.
No matter the vehicle, if I wear a certain pair of jeans, I get shocked every time I close the door when I get out of any vehicle. I assume it's how I get in or out and kinda slide across the seat. Such a pain lol.
My first car always did that when I close the door. I started knocking the door with my knuckles before closing the door after I got out (it doesn't hurt as bad if I get zapped). The habit stuck around and I am still doing that 19 years later.
The old addage of "don't use your cell phone or discharge static near the pumps". It's a "myth" grounded in absolute reality.
Twice in the last year Deputies/Police officers have discharged tasers near pumps, starting massive fires.
OFC the voltage put out by a tazer deploy is much more than static discharge from interchange between skin and metal, but it certainly is grounded in reality.
The cool part is the cloth stitching on the doors [extended back to become the same cloth used for the rear seats](https://www.stonecoldclassics.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/1992-Mazda-MX3-V6_1point8i-ABS_coupe-for-sale-seats.jpg). It just makes the interior look cohesive.
*This brought me back to*
*My first car. I did always*
*Wonder what that was*

Do you have more photos of this car you can share?
This brings back so many memories from almost 20years ago for me.
Had a few of these cars throughout high school era.
Tore a motor out and had it rebuilt.
Swapped parts to convert to standard.
Remember painting the hood in a not so very well ventilated room.
After getting it all put together, was waiting for some linkage. Car somehow got put in gear from a friend that sat in it. I started it later and it jumped, rolled over a ramp and drove into the engine lift at the end of the driveway, denting the freshly installed hood.
Sucked when I was 17, funny now.
I’ve found a lot of modern economy cars are very staticky, maybe because of all the polyester.
When I say modern, I mean in the past 12 years. Did the MX-3 have a lot of polyester in it?

Yeah gas hoses have built in grounds inside the webbing. Same goes for the whole cellphone thing. Never happened.
Mythbusters tested this. Myth busted.

Yup, Mythbusters tested this back in the day. Even with a perfect air-fuel mixture they couldn't get the phone to ignite anything.
That advice from mom is correct advice. If you get into an accident or your car is otherwise disabled and there are downed power lines you should stay put unless you absolutely have to move. Way to go mom!
Also the clean underwear for the EMTs to not gross out.
Hop
And then penguin shuffle!
> Are you talking about if you hit a telephone pole and you’re not supposed to get out because of electricity and all that. This is actually true
Yeah, but nobody is talking about telephone poles lol, and thats only if the wires come down from the pole and touch the ground or your car.
What’s funny is my dad had an MX-3 and when I was younger I would keep touching it because I thought it activated something. My dad even speculated it controlled something that maybe wasn’t working. I miss that car.
I thought it was something that was just broken to
I was told it was because of a bad ground somewhere. And, with my old man's 1972 Maverick, I just assumed it was true. 😆
I believe this is why you attach a ground wire when filling up an old plane. I asked my instructor why we did it and he simply said “Because we do.”

Great, thanks, now I’m gonna get a big bill from you in the mail for ground.
0.1 ground received. ;)
Also why there are static wicks on the wing- moving through fluids takes a lot of energy

An example of this is shown in "Hunt for Red October".
It's not metal though.
There are other things that conduct electricity besides metal. Some types of plastics (like that touch spot) can accumulate and dissipate static charge. Also, carpets and such.
Better that it's not. It's probably carbon filled rubber which dissipates static slowly, vs. a metal ground that would 100% zap you (think doorknob)
Does the rubber piece connect to something under the fabric? Or it's just that small piece glued on top of the fabric?
It's probably wired/connected to the chassis behind the panel, but I've never taken one off to verify.
I mean look at all that static-inducing material 😓 definitely needed to ease peoples’ fears (unfounded or not) for this model lol
I learned a new word! Apocryphal.
I had this problem all the time with the cloth seats in my Pontiacs. Never blew up a gas station though, despite my best attempts.
No matter the vehicle, if I wear a certain pair of jeans, I get shocked every time I close the door when I get out of any vehicle. I assume it's how I get in or out and kinda slide across the seat. Such a pain lol.

You could say it's not grounded, hence the issue.
That is super cool stitching

It's to dissipate any built-up static electric charge.
I'm jealous you have an MX-3
I love this car
I've always wanted one.
This girl I was crazy about in high school had this same interior in her mx3. 20 year mystery solved.
This brought me back to my first car. I did always wonder what that was
She’s my first to loves it

What condition is the rest of the car in? Miss mine so much had a 95 GS
Mint found her parked in a barn for 12 years 5 speed gs
Barn find ftw! Tell me it's teal green.
Oh yes
My heart literally sank because I am not you 🤣 great find man!
Maybe the car used to be a priest?
Nice! A had a ‘93 GS. How many km/miles does it have on it? It’s fun to beat the piss out, however mine started burning oil around 250,000km.
128k she got lots of go left I’d say
Miles or km?
Km, as of right now I can say there’s nothing wrong with it🤞
Fun fact, omarions first car was an mx3, which was the inspiration for his song "touch".
Touch it and find out
Came here for funny bullshit answers and was very disappointed
At least it’s not on the headliner
Car dropping a hint

Just establishing consent.
Touch. The feel. Of cotton.
Why did auto manufactures go away from this beautiful stitching in interiors… it’s so fun and vibrant. Everything is surgical now
Dang what a flashback. I forgot that was there, now I know what it's for. Had an MX3 from 1997 to around maybe 2003

The 1993 model was my first car ever!

It’s all vinyl and bus carpet for the seats beautiful interior imo
.....touch it
I love that fabric pattern!
Maybe it's lonely
Touch Audio?
T O U C H
Sshhhh just touch it
Looks like it actually says "TOUGH". Like it's durable or resistant?
This is a Mazda sub, please drive your Toyota to the nearest optometrist.
Damn, I guess I'll leave then. It was nice learning about the quirks and features of various Mazdas. Adios.
Behold Reddit
Sorry buddy, forgot my /s! It definitely does say touch tho.
