For those who can't do this (apartment, funds) you can use a tent inside your house to make a smaller space to heat with body heat. You can also make a fort out of mattresses and couches. Same concept. Blanket forts will also do this. Shoving cardboard over windows will lower heat loss through them, too.
If using an air bed inside a tent for space reasons (like zippers, or weight reasons) you should put blankets under and over you.
Bonus: forts and tents are cool, so if you have young children you can make something scary (power outage in subzero temperatures) into a fun game. Find blankets, lets move the couch pillows and boom - it's not scary for them. Add some battery lamps or flashlight and now you're camping. And a blanket thrown over the outside of the tent will insulate it. Just crack the zipper/ windows for farts and moisture if you've got the whole family/ stinky dogs in there with you.
But tilt a bed into a wall and seal up the end with a couple pillows and your body heat can warm a space, or toss a blanket over a tent. Smaller is better. Lining the bottom with couch pillows is warmer than an air bed.
Stay safe, people.
I just used our generator up here in VT for the first time since we moved into our house a year and a half ago. I was told buy the seller that a generator would be a solid idea. Turns out our power goes out a tenth as often as the other side of the road, but it was out for 16 hours yesterday, and it would have sucked to have no backup heat.
All hail the sun god, the almighty wacky-ball-sack! May wacky-ball-sack bless us, and may wacky-ball-sack strike down the wicked! Wacky-ball-sack! All hail wacky-ball-sack!
That's exactly what I use to supplement the electric heaters in my house. Wake up in the morning, turn it on for up to about an hour and the house stays warm the rest of the day with the electric heaters maintaining it.
PSA FROM THE NORTHERN STATES: DO NOT RUN CARS INSIDE YOUR GARAGE. DO NOT RUN GAS OVENS WITH DOOR OPEN. DO NOT RUN GAS POWERED GENERATORS INSIDE HOUSE. ALL CAN GIVE OFF CARBON MONOXIDE AND LEAD TO POISONING. GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND, FIND A SAFE ALTERNATIVE. STAY SAFE OUT THERE.
I mean, CO2 poisoning would be an even worse way to go, that's why it doesn't happen: it actually feels like suffocating. Also cause you probably can't get CO2 poisoning at normal pressure and O2 concentration without suffocating first.
Not at all true. Inhaling concentrations of CO2 around 1% will be fatal in a couple minutes, even if the other 99% of the gas you were breathing was oxygen (and you can survive on oxygen concentrations of around 16% - CO2 concentrations trigger the urge to breath rather than oxygen concentrations). It changes the pH of your blood which wrecks havoc with proteins and ion balances and all sorts of stuff. CO poising on the other hand binds up the hemoglobin in your blood and essentially makes it so your blood can't carry oxygen.
My dad did this once. Tried warming the car up before leaving. I had to run down and tell him to stop. Not to mention our bedroom was right above the garage. So... you know... not really how I want to die.
I went to fix someone’s heat the other day. He had all the burners going on his range to keep warm, and got mad when I pointed out that it’s dangerous.
A few years ago our power went out for 3 days in the middle of winter. Two doors down had power and they knew we had a baby so they offered us a space heater and an extension cord.
When we renovated a year ago we got a gas fireplace that can function in power outages and it's already saved our butts once this winter when we lost power overnight. Oddly enough, it was again just our house. (I swear we pay our bills)
Mine is just broken from the cold at this point. It keeps clicking trying to start but it won’t. Power keeps going off here too.(Nashville). Luckily I have a fireplace and a system upstairs. I feel for anyone who doesn’t.
Super random, but mine was struggling to kick on and doesn’t have a pilot although it’s gas. Found out the intake was blocked with snow! Be sure to go out and check your intake if you have a gas furnace… cleared that and changed the filter and it is keeping up and starting fine now!!
If you have a heat pump, this is wise so the capacitor on the outside unit doesn't fry with the power on/off/on/off thing. It's about a $15 part and easy to replace yourself, but that's meaningless unless you actually have one on hand.
Blanket forts, insulated tents, couch pillow and mattress forts.
All good ways to stay warm. Bonus factor for small kids: they make something scary into something fun so they are less likely to panic. And they're warmer.
This is why I keep candles and blankets. No the candles aren't going to heat up your entire house but if you've got five or six candles and you are in a decently small room It can help more than you think
True. I had to go get mine after dealing with a similar situation all the way through as well. I hope they can at least make it to a hotel or something. :s
This is my greatest fear right now. Our power randomly went out at 1am the other night on a perfectly clear evening. We never got an explanation and it was one of the nicer "warmer" nights here, like 24 degrees. Right now it's close to 0 degrees out and the wind has been whipping like crazy. We are constantly running fan heaters in every room because there is absolutely zero insulation in my condo. I'm so scared the power is going to go out. I am so sorry you're going through this right now.
Your right i changed out the door massive difference. Changed out windows they were old ass single pane.
A can of foam, roll of plastic, staples, and even wal mart plastic bags that i bn saving through the year.
I live in house with zero insulation built in the 30s.
They added stucco in the 80s over the barnwood covered in shingles.
It has rock foundation and its sinking this will be the last year i live here.
The wind is the worst!!
The wood stove is the only reason im not freezing
Many locations are having rolling power outages “to protect the power grid”.
Our power grids are in dire need of an upgrade and new capacity added, especially if we want everyone using electric vehicles.
Maybe we should consult with the Canadians to understand how they keep the power on all winter.
Ok, edgelord. Look up "Canada grid rolling blackouts". They happen there as well. US and Canada share a grid, which is regulated and controlled by [NERC](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_power_transmission_grid), a joint regulatory agency between US, Canada, and Mexico. NERC decides where and when rolling blackouts occur, and NERC tells the operators what upgrades have to be made. With the exception of most of Texas, North America shares electrical generation and the transmission of electricity.
We were having a blizzard with 45mph wind sitting at about 2°F (around -15°F with wind chill) yesterday and our power went out for about 5 hours amd my townhouse was built in 1918 with few updates since. Lol the most insulated part of this place is the basement. So ... I feel your pain. I'm sorry you're dealing with that, it's stressful and a little scary, but you'll get through it.
Wear layers. Put a thin layer under a top thicker layer. Pants, shirts, sweaters, socks. Layer, layer, layer. And gather all of your blankets and bodies(human or animal lol) in the house. Everyone in one room so body heat can do its thing. Huddle under blankets together and tell funny stories. Also, of you're lucky and have a gas water heater, do some dishes or fill a pot or bottle with hot water and put it under the blankets with you. Use any resource you have.
The funny stories create laughter. Laughter works our muscles in our core and creates heat. Idk if that was as self explanatory as I thought, so I put it in here. Lol
I'm in Alberta and we just had about a week of -50°C weather and my furnace was busted 2 of those days so I know your pain friend. Can't really offer much advice beyond grab some blankets and bundle up but you've probably already done that.
-50°C is equivalent to -58°F, which is 223K.

This video has some great advice on staying warm during a winter power outage - it's from back when Texas had that massive storm. Good luck! https://youtu.be/XtFwAR9182M
Check your intake and exhaust if you have a gas furnace, as well as changing out the filter if you can and it needs it… mine was struggling and I was very concerned it was going to fail, but after those things were done it’s back on track! Stay warm and good luck.
That was my fear last night, my wife went to her friend's house for the night, I had to work, and my dog was home alone. With it being 8° and feeling like -4°, I was hoping the load on our grid wouldn’t stress it too much and I’d come home to a cold house.
Our city decided to do rolling black outs today. Most of the city went off and never came back on. We have been out for 5 hours now. House is getting super cold. Its 4 degrees outside. I really hope it comes back on soon.
I know it's a little late, but a big enough inverter and a long/beefy (10ga) electrical cord, a little electrical splicing & you'd be set to run your furnace from your car/truck alternator.
I’m sure someone has already said it but it’s much easier to heat a small space instead of a big one. Depending on how many people are in your house and your supplies, put yourself in a small bathroom with the door closed, cover drains, cover under the door, and set up a bunch of blankets and towels. Your body heat will be better used in the small space and it will be a little warmer than the rest of the house. Also keep in mind if you have a south facing window, keep the blinds open during the day as the sun will heat up the room as well but close them during he night to help with heat loss. I know I’m late to the party but hopefully your power is back on!
If you have a tent and can set it up inside do so. Drag a mattress in there if possible and a stack of warm blankets. You want to trap as much body heat inside the tent as you can. Good luck.
If it gets really dire, you can build a fortification with couch cushions and pillows. The limited space allows for better heating. Leave a small hole for ventilation.
Light some candles and stay in one room of the house. It won't make it super warm, but a few degrees is better than nothing. Also, cover the windows. Obviously, be careful with candles.
PSA: If the power is not reliable and you know elderly or disabled people, give them a call and make sure they are all set. Too many people have frozen to death in their own homes.
Good point. Turn it off the main, run the sink in each room until it starts water stops coming out. Then mostly, but not completely, turn off the sink.
You must be somewhere you don’t have to heat usually? In Canada, you usually have to have two forms of heating to insure a home. A primary and a backup. I have a heat pump and a wood stove, for example.
Yes that’s so helpful. More than likely somebody drove into a power line, and in that case the power company has to wait for the fire dept to clear the scene before they can even work on the power. All while in 9• weather
We lost power for three days a few years ago. I went to the store and bought a large Mr. Buddy heater and a couple of propane tanks. It says that it’s rated as safe for indoor use, but I never really trusted that. We did get some heat from it. I haven’t used it much since, but we do have it in reserve should the power go out again. I’m sorry that I don’t have a better recommendation.
Yeah I have a kerosene heater but I need a new wick. It wouldn’t start up this morning. I have a fire going in the fireplace and I’m about to make a trip out to find a wick
Sorry to hear this op, Im roughly in the same boat as well. Just got our furnace and thermostat replaced on the 21st and 22nd, after not having the old one work for 2 weeks. Worked perfectly fine yesterday, I wake up today it’s 1 degree outside, 33 degrees in house. Wtf?
Not sure if you rent but if you don’t, invest in a wood burning stove. If you do, invest in propane reserves and buy a few gas heaters. It’s important to be prepared for these things. Good luck and stay warm!
I threw a 2kW generator in my truck leaving work Thursday just incase, although I've had two clients call and say their whole home back up generators have been kicking out due to low gas pressure... so, regardless of preparedness, it can still be off.
Tip from my days of having no money. Fill the bath tub with hot water. There’s a lot of energy in a bathtub of hot water and it will give you at least one room that isn’t freezing.
Always best to have backup or alternative heat if possible. We used to always lose power in the cold. It’s a terrible feeling worrying about busted water pipes. If that temp gets much lower, better shut off your main and drain lines.

People die like this, pretty much every winter storm with power outages. This guy speaks the truth!
Sorry for the yelling. But CO poisoning is no joke. Edit: I forgot what monoxide means. Stay in school kids, don’t do drugs.
Carbon MONoxide. CO. CO2 is Carbon DIoxide. Big difference.
I mean, CO2 poisoning would be an even worse way to go, that's why it doesn't happen: it actually feels like suffocating. Also cause you probably can't get CO2 poisoning at normal pressure and O2 concentration without suffocating first.

I just cut it off because the power went out. Idk why but it’s a weird thing I do when the power goes out.
Good habit. Reduces load when the power comes back
If it's oil or gas heat it doesn't really matter much. Most that would kick on is a blower. All of the heavy lifting is done via combustion.
Mine is just broken from the cold at this point. It keeps clicking trying to start but it won’t. Power keeps going off here too.(Nashville). Luckily I have a fireplace and a system upstairs. I feel for anyone who doesn’t.

Blanket forts, insulated tents, couch pillow and mattress forts. All good ways to stay warm. Bonus factor for small kids: they make something scary into something fun so they are less likely to panic. And they're warmer.
You in NC? It's is back now for down to 60 before popping back on
Yep! In NC
Figured. I think they show posts from people geographically close and we had the same delimma yesterday. Stay warm and have a happy holiday season.
Duke power?
Central NC here. So far, they haven't done this to us. Going to light a candle or two now, just in case...
Same, we were having family over for lunch today too 😩
This is why I keep candles and blankets. No the candles aren't going to heat up your entire house but if you've got five or six candles and you are in a decently small room It can help more than you think
Having a lit up area to be in makes a huge difference to your mindset.
This is why I kept a large emergency space heater when I lived up north. Good luck, OP.
OP is in NC. Not somewhere you'd really prep for a serious winter storm.
True. I had to go get mine after dealing with a similar situation all the way through as well. I hope they can at least make it to a hotel or something. :s
We (central NC) get ice storms far more often than snow, and power can be out for days. Generators and space heaters are in many garages around here.
-25F outside and out heater going full blast (with new heat pump) can only get it to stay around 64.
Natural gas would be keeping up with the demand
Time for some Mario Kart then?

If you need to, go to Walmart buy a cheap tent. Put it in your living room and fill with blankets. It’ll act as extra insulation and keep you warmer.
I was there yesterday, and hopefully, it comes back soon. Or you can do what I did, stay with family if you got any. Good luck friend.
Ah, yeah. We had no power in an ice storm for 7 days. The inside temp stabilized around 40 degrees so that was nice.
If you own a 2 person tent set that up inside extra blankets

Take a cold shower to counter it.

Turn your water main off now.
No… keep it open. Let it trickle. You need to keep the flow going
Only close the main if you can drain the system
Good point. Turn it off the main, run the sink in each room until it starts water stops coming out. Then mostly, but not completely, turn off the sink.
This. Right here.
If you haven't done it already, open all the cabinet doors to the sinks to prevent pipe freezing.
Sucks for y'all 74 today in San Diego and 78 for Christmas bundle up out there

54°? Why don't you turn on the AC if it's that hot?
Well your system is off. Flip that switch to heat.
It could be worse, you could be homeless and in a tent.
Maybe that homeless guy has the warmth of hope. And friendship. And peace. Ever think about that?
Translation “Thoughts and prayers”
Damn. Maybe he can eat hope
I mean the post is about keeping warm. Not hunger. But yeah on a completely unrelated note you are on to something.
Could be worse, you could be homeless and tentless in LA where the rich try to actively destroy camps and not help them
You must be somewhere you don’t have to heat usually? In Canada, you usually have to have two forms of heating to insure a home. A primary and a backup. I have a heat pump and a wood stove, for example.

Boil a big pot of water
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas...
Do you have a gas oven?
ha funny, been living in Maine for years now, the cold is nothing.
No generator or indoor kerosene or propane heater? Poor planning.
How is the house not on fire yet? 54ºC is the Sahara desert temperature on its hottest days.
I’m guessing Fahrenheit… or Kelvin
Sorry to hear this op, Im roughly in the same boat as well. Just got our furnace and thermostat replaced on the 21st and 22nd, after not having the old one work for 2 weeks. Worked perfectly fine yesterday, I wake up today it’s 1 degree outside, 33 degrees in house. Wtf?
My power is not out but my furnace is😥
I assume you’re on the east coast then
Same here. I do t know what the temp is cause my thermostat is linked with the power. It’s 4 degrees outside.
Light all the candles you have
Merry Christmas!
Turn off the main valve and drain remaining water in the pipes before you house falls below freezing!
I wish you the best of luck, being a Florida man myself i am so happy about this low 40 high 55 ish degree weather
In the short term, look up how to make a hobo heater. Long term, good luck.
Tip from my days of having no money. Fill the bath tub with hot water. There’s a lot of energy in a bathtub of hot water and it will give you at least one room that isn’t freezing.
We're getting power taken from areas for 30-45 mins a day because of how cold it is
Chilly for me here at 68 with a high of 75 today.

Stay warm. Our heater died yesterday and the part they need to repair it will not be in until next week. It's 51 in our house right now
We were in the same situation last night, it’s scary! Hope you are able to stay safe and soon will be warm.
I thought it was normal to have a backup generator Nope, Canadians are just weird
I have a 250,000 BTU kerosene blast heater.
Always best to have backup or alternative heat if possible. We used to always lose power in the cold. It’s a terrible feeling worrying about busted water pipes. If that temp gets much lower, better shut off your main and drain lines.

Drain all your water filled pipes before it hits freezing!
Make sure to turn on all of your faucets just a little bit or else the pipes will freeze and burst
Likewise. The heating board in my kitchen has ceased functioning. It is set to 24c and my kitchen/living room are sitting at 17.6c. Time to prep food for no reason and run my oven 🙄
It´s getting cold in herre, i put on all my clothes...Nebraska Nelly probably
Yikes
Only 9 degrees? It was -30 here lol
Fnaf moment
On the bright side, you won't have to chill the drinks.
