It's ridiculous. Honestly one of my favorite pre cons out of the box. I play it at my lgs and it keeps up with most decks there on commander night fairly well
Face commander. The recursion every turn at combat is too good to pass up on imo. And finality counters suck, but in my lgs there are lots of overloaded cyc rifts to put stuff back in hand and reset them.
Virtue and Valor from WoE. It's relatively cheap still, has good card synergy, and can create insane buffs for your creatures. A common complaint about it is that it creates a hard-to-track board state, so I just keep tabs on the number of enchantments in play and it helps from slowing down the game. It's easy to upgrade into more potent enchantress decks like Sigarda, which is one of my favorite decks that I keep in rotation.
I have heard lots of good things too with this precon. Sadly never play it as a precon because the missing pieces, by the time I had the missing tokens I already took it apart
The mono black necron deck and the Urza chief artificer deck immediately come to mind. As well as the Baldurs gate dimir minelayer/pirate deck and the orthoz one. (Forget the name off the top of my head.
I was about to say, Necrons was my first deck after not playing for 4 years. Very fun, and the real major "upgrades" you buy for the deck are like better graveyard recursion.
I personally enjoy the Quick Draw Deck from Outlaws of Thunder Junction alot. Its a really fun spellslinger deck that I find easy to play while also being decently powerfull - and it can be upgraded in a very powerfull deck quite easily at a later point, like turning it into a Storm-Deck.
I think its quite the overlooked precon.
I agree, it's a great precon out of the box, with lots of fun interactions. I've got one and it's a blast to play, but still need to upgrade it at some point.
I haven't gotten to play Eldrazi Incursion yet, but I don't think it would make this list for me, ONLY because of the price. I'm sure it's fun, but goddamn the markup was insane. I still bought it though because I'm smooth in the brain.
Tired of having friends? Want a target on your back? Love counters? Mothman. Its a deck that makes everyone mill with rad counters, rad counters deal damage while milling you, and then you get to put +1/+1 on any card you got. All the cards in the precon are great and without any upgrades gives you a solid deck. I would recommend though not playing this with other precons as this is just a league above toxic for super casual.
This deck was surprisingly strong. And waaayyyy above the rest of the precons in this set. My group likes to play precons from sets and Mothman won nearly every time we played that fallout set. Very toxic opinions were shared
Just swat mothman out the sky when he ETB and it’s super easy to beat. If you give it the chance to run though, it almost always runs away and takes the game.
Token Triumph is a good one. My roommate bought one and with less than ten dollars of modifications, made it insane. Even before the modifications it was a good deck.
Any of the LCU precons is just awesome. BUT. HEAR ME OUT. GRAND LARCENY. MOST FUN DECK IN THE WORLD AND CAN BE STUPIDLY STRONG AS WELL. Unlike most other precons, this decks power level depends a lot on the other players power levels. So just imagine how it feels to enter a pod saying 'I brought a precon' and ending up winning using the powercreep guys cards again and again. SO YEAH, FUN, STRONG AND ONLY DOWNSIDE IS THAT YOU MIGHT END UP LOSING FRIENDS
I only play this deck with friends because randoms at the local LGS do not like their cards being stolen, and I upgraded it to really lean into the stealing
I am going to second the merfolk deck from Lost Caverns of Ixalan. The commander has an ability that allows all merfolk to explore each combat. I haven’t upgraded it, and it can still beat strong decks!
Idk if anybody has said this yet, but ELDRAZI INCURSION. I just got mine and am in love. It's absolutely nuts. Add some cards like echoes of eternity, and it's really really strong and fun
That's fair, it goes infinite pretty easily, and annihilator is pretty annoying to play against. I'm trying to remove the more toxic cards, like heavy annihilator, and am running little removal. I think it's one of the most fun decks I own
I highly recommend watching Tolarian Community College reviews of the commander precon decks on Youtube. He’s pretty spot on with his assessments imo and usually ranks them by which he thinks are strongest to weakest. I play a lot with precons so he’s been a valuable source for making informed purchasing decisions.
Now if you’re talking fun that’s obviously subjective but there is one called Corrupted Influence I particularly like. Most people seem to be down on it but outside of the usual precon limitations I feel like the dislike generally comes from people playing the deck incorrectly or having a disdain for the poison mechanic. The deck actually centers around the corrupted mechanic which activates/triggers various abilities on your turn if you have three or more poison counters on a player(s). The goal isn’t to wipe everyone out with poison counters but to get them into that corrupted splash zone and generate tons of value.
The UWG precon from the murders at it lov manor is pretty decent, I modded mine to have extra cards on hand win con
The BG Lathril elves deck is terrifying
The Superfriends Command masters deck is wild and overwhelming
The Glint-Eye commander deck is pretty solid and has a lot of cards you can pull out and put in other decks if you wanted
I just bought the UB from murders and am really liking it, but its my first commander deck, so I dunno if it's a "good" deck or not. I've only played my GF's precons. It's winning against both of them, though!
Merfolk deck from Lost Caverns of Ixalan is very very good. Mothman deck from fallout is also good. Food and Fellowship from the LOTR set is also good, as is the Riders of Rohan deck.
Lathril elf tribal from Kaldheim is pretty good and a lot of fun.
Painbow with the planeswalker Jared that is WURBG is alot of fun and pretty good.
Stella Lee from outlaws of thunder junction can be really crazy with only a few upgrades, but out of the box it is also pretty good.
Merfolk precon is absolutely synergistic and can really pop off.
Eowyn from Lotr is also very very good.
I see Virtue and Valor mentioned twice ( now Trice) in comment section, I want to add : while it's good, the 10 tokens it come from precons are wrong. You have to buy the missing ones or print your owns. Quite disappointed on those missing tokens. The virtuous role / sorcerer / royal tokens are vital yet we only get 1... And the cat, ox, elephant, bird, more aura roles tokens are all missing. We get pirates/ faeries tokens instead, the pegasus token, 1. I felt like I purchased an incomplete product. This is the 2nd precon I've purchased, The opening was an disappointed experience.
I have (mtg print) the missing roles tokens and turned it into [[Mazzy, Truesword Paladin]] deck + [[skybind]] + [[chishiro, the shattered Blade]]. It functions much better.
Ngl I didn’t even realize this happened until now and it had no impact on my enjoyment of the deck. Also the deck is only $30 now so even if it’s technically incomplete you are getting a decent discount off retail value so it’s still worth it.
I do love Virtue and Valor precon, the missing tokens are the only downside. I got both precon from WOE for ~ 55USD.
It's this precon made me discovered MTG print because the tokens are missing.. heh
Ha I love mtgprint, right around when I bought the precon I started printer proxying and it has been great. Had to tone it down cause I don’t think printing and cutting a 2 decks a week was good for my fingers. Luckily I ran out of new commanders to try so went back to real cards lmao.
By release date:
Graveyard Overdrive
Desert Bloom
Deadly Disguise
Ahoy Matters
Virtue and Valor
Enduring Enchantments
Call for Backup
Rebellion Rising
Mishra's banner
Broker's Precon
Riveteers' Precon
Upgrades Unleash
Spirit Squaldron
Coven Counters
Silverquill precon
Quandrix precon
Those are the PreCons that can be upgraded in "just a few bucks", and most cards to replace are... Well... Lands.
Are definetly great, holds no controversy around playgroups ( a.k.a. Univerese Beyond and the "new reserve list")
And are below what we would call "MSRP".
Big NO to Graveyard Overdrive, though it does include some good cards.
Call for Backup isn't great either.
Coven Counters, the commander is very lackluster.
Rebellion Rising is cool, but requires lots of upgrades to power it up.
I'm going to say this deck is the most inconsistent and frustrating decks I've ever played. It was my pet deck for awhile and I even spent hundreds trying to make it work how I wanted but I took it apart a few months later.
Zero consistency and even at its best it is a slow engine to playoffs like Craterhoof or Triumph of the hordes like every other token go wide deck.
Really? I find it is pretty consistent with minor upgrades. The curve is pretty steep out of the box but with some ramp, new adventure cards like Questing Druid, some synergy pieces like Containment Construct, add some cascade or discover cards and it just works. Apex devastator is now very accessible, Call forth the tempest or even Hit the Motherlode and it gets out of hand quick. Add a burn spell like impact tremors and it is game over haha
The meta I play in is pretty board wipe heavy, which is probaly part of the reason I cant get this deck to work. Everytime I try to go wide with decks I get wrecked.
In that case add more burn like purphoros or warstorm surge, paired up with Virtue of Courage to get card advantage. You can either give them haste with Anger or just be happy with pinging for 2 everytime a creature enters the battlefield. Add some token doublers for good measure
If you get the MH3 Simic precon its a secret eldrazi commander. I played with a guy last night that was running it as is, cloudpost tapping for 26 colorless is cracked. Plus it comes with the Urza lands. Grab it, its actually amazing.
I enjoy all 4 of my precons.
Two I’ve upgraded and are actually at a decent relative ’power level’ for my playgroup.
- “Desert Bloom” (OTJ) helmed by [[Yuma, Proud Protector]] play lands for value, sac lands for value. Mid-late game you’re doing lots of both in the same turn to vomit out an atrocious board state at speed. It’s fairly durable against board wipes and Yuma can almost ignore commander tax entirely.
- “Scrappy Survivors” (PIP) with [[Dogmeat, Ever Loyal]] as the commander (looking about switching him out though). A Naya equipment and auras deck that prefers both to be in the graveyard. Not as resilient as Yuma but still very fun when it goes. Be very scared of [[Three Dog, Galaxy News DJ]] if he’s allowed to live and do his thing it’s as good as game over.
The two I’ve not upgraded are both from MH3:
- “Tricky Terrain” [[Omo, Queen of Vesuva]] Needs a few tweaks for how I like playing it but nothing major. Absolutely in love with this deck and knew I would be from the start which is why I spoiled myself with the Collector’s Edition.
- “Eldrazi Incursion” [[Ulalek, Fused Atrocity]] I need to play this one more, but I’m probably going to remove [[Azlask, the Swelling Scourge]] and most of the token subtheme to remake him properly as his own commander (which sounds really fun). But so far so fun. Just expect a target on your back, and learn the stack.
I will say though - I got lucky and picked up Eldrazi for £58 and the collectors edition of Omo for £104 (Quick and dirty exchange puts that at around $74 and $132 respectively).
My favourite is Exit from Exile. It's pretty good out of the box, always does something and you almost never run out of cards and it seems we're getting new cards for the theme every other set. That deck is a blast
The new Tricky Terrain & Eldrazi Incursions precons are good.
Eldrazi Unbound. The Brothers War precons. Timey-Wimey. Necron Dynasty. Party Time. Riders of Rohan. All are solid out of the box.
The white red goat/ sudpect dec from murder at karlov manor. Playing against it is very annoying. And when you have a 3 man game, ja kinda fucked againstvthat deck
Honestly, the knights precon with Sidar (Marshal of Zhalfir) is great out of the box. I think that's March of the Machine.
I also like the MotM convoke deck
Faerie from Wilds of Eldraine. I bought a Bitterblossom and Spellstutter Sprite to put in with a couple other Lorwyn/Morningtide cards and everyone hates me lol
The esper Knights deck. Sidar Jabari? It goes hard with little upgrade. It’s fun to discard and drop knights for free every turn. Plus card draw all built into a flying first striker? I love it.
Mind Flayrrrrrrrs is a pretty fun precon.
I just got into MTG but even playing against people who have been playing for years and with $300+ decks, I still put up a very good fight. Very highly recommended.
The merfolk precon from lost caverns of ixalan, Explorers of the Deep is very good
That's the base of my deck (I've upgraded it). I fell in love from the first time I played it.
This and the dino deck from the same set.
Me and my friends play budget commander (decks that cost a maximum of 50 USD) and this deck was absolutely good right from the start.
Honestly all of the Ixalan precons are bangers.
Pirates is good?
It's ridiculous. Honestly one of my favorite pre cons out of the box. I play it at my lgs and it keeps up with most decks there on commander night fairly well
Ok, ok. So are you running it with the commander Brass or the alt?
Face commander. The recursion every turn at combat is too good to pass up on imo. And finality counters suck, but in my lgs there are lots of overloaded cyc rifts to put stuff back in hand and reset them.
Still cannot believe this the cheapest from this set. Stick some counterspells, SeaHunter, and Genesis in it and you have a very good deck.
This is the answer. I accidentally did lethal commander damage turn 5 once.
I have heard lots of good things too with this precon. Sadly never play it as a precon because the missing pieces, by the time I had the missing tokens I already took it apart
I picked this deck up Walmart special for 30$
The mono black necron deck and the Urza chief artificer deck immediately come to mind. As well as the Baldurs gate dimir minelayer/pirate deck and the orthoz one. (Forget the name off the top of my head.
Mindflayarrrrs!!
I was about to say, Necrons was my first deck after not playing for 4 years. Very fun, and the real major "upgrades" you buy for the deck are like better graveyard recursion.
Party Time is the Orthoz. It's an absolutely banger and even more so of you swap the commanders.
Party Time Enter from Exile Eldrazi Incursion
I haven't gotten to play Eldrazi Incursion yet, but I don't think it would make this list for me, ONLY because of the price. I'm sure it's fun, but goddamn the markup was insane. I still bought it though because I'm smooth in the brain.

I have won like 3 games out of the 6 i have played with it, the only change i made was adding a great hedge which i never got to use in the deck lol
Just swat mothman out the sky when he ETB and it’s super easy to beat. If you give it the chance to run though, it almost always runs away and takes the game.

I only play this deck with friends because randoms at the local LGS do not like their cards being stolen, and I upgraded it to really lean into the stealing
Played this deck in a 6-man pod against Tergrid, Atraxa, Gyruda, Sisay, and Arcum, I had fun being the archenemy for 3/4 of the game using a precon.
Both Eldrazi ones (CMM and MH3) are incredibly strong! I’m personally a fan of the black Necron 40k deck as well.
To play? Sure To play against? It's kinda meh.....
That's fair, it goes infinite pretty easily, and annihilator is pretty annoying to play against. I'm trying to remove the more toxic cards, like heavy annihilator, and am running little removal. I think it's one of the most fun decks I own
It's mostly annihilator and the forever stacks indeed. It somehow it always escalates fast....
I'm waiting for a restock...I want it, but not for what people are selling it for.
I highly recommend watching Tolarian Community College reviews of the commander precon decks on Youtube. “Call for Backup”, “Eldrazi Excursion”, “Prismari Performance”, “Painbow”, “Planeswalker Party”, and “Heads I Win, Tails You Lose”
Painbows mana base is absolutely garbage.
The Blame Game [[Nelly Borca, Impulsive Accuser]] precon is a lot of fun. I've upgraded it a bit and now it's probably my most played deck this year.
[Nelly Borca, Impulsive Accuser](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/2/e/2ef59aa9-f5e1-413a-869b-d287db95efd0.jpg?1706448880) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Nelly%20Borca%2C%20Impulsive%20Accuser) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mkc/4/nelly-borca-impulsive-accuser?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/2ef59aa9-f5e1-413a-869b-d287db95efd0?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

Exit from exile headed by [[faldorn the dreadwolf herald]]
The new MH3 tricky terrain precon is pretty nice

token triumph and masters of evil are perfect once they get a few upgrades, never lost with them
The call of the spirits precon from 2015 is one of my favorites

My favourite is Exit from Exile. It's pretty good out of the box, always does something and you almost never run out of cards and it seems we're getting new cards for the theme every other set. That deck is a blast
I have the tyranids and mutant menace decks from universes beyond, they're a bit pricier than normal precons but I think they're both very fun decks
The new Tricky Terrain & Eldrazi Incursions precons are good. Eldrazi Unbound. The Brothers War precons. Timey-Wimey. Necron Dynasty. Party Time. Riders of Rohan. All are solid out of the box.
Sneak attack is fun with a little upgrades
The white red goat/ sudpect dec from murder at karlov manor. Playing against it is very annoying. And when you have a 3 man game, ja kinda fucked againstvthat deck
Honestly, the knights precon with Sidar (Marshal of Zhalfir) is great out of the box. I think that's March of the Machine. I also like the MotM convoke deck
Ellivere is surprisingly good out of the box and among the cheapest you can get
Riveteers from capenna was fun
No love for Chishiro from Kami Neon Dynasty??
Enduring Enchantments from Commander Masters is cracked Explorers of the deep from LCI Revenant Recon from MKM Any Fallout deck that isn't Science!
the naya deck from zendikar rising, being obuun as the commander and omnath as the alt commander, it's actually a really fun landfall deck
Desert Bloom from Thunder junction is a menace right out of the box. I've had to retire it from playing with my friend group.
