Regretfully I didn't appreciate the full extent of Bill Walton until I got older. I remember first watching him in the NBA playoffs watching my Jordan-Pippen-Rodman Bulls, and thought "who the heck is this guy? He has dumb takes" But that's because back then I was too serious about basketball (really everything) as an older teenager that was a big diehard fan of the Bulls (to be fair, when the Bulls are playing the game in the playoffs nobody's on the road in Chicago), as well as someone that played basketball daily and struggled to get better. And took playing the sport too seriously. But not really till later until I grew as a person and became more lighthearted about things that I truly became to appreciate Bill Walton.
