This discourse is how you know weβre in the good times
> The sentiment that some religions are worse than others has been used to justify bigotry against Muslims
> > [indignant wall of text]
I don't hate atheists and I don't point out their capacity for bigotry to argue that it's in any way inherent to atheism or evidence as to why you shouldn't be atheist. I'd be in big trouble considering the alternative.
I point out bigotry because bigotry is wrong, with or without a god to ordain it.
I wanted to leave a comment but man try threading that needle when people are already forcing discussion into one of two options
I actually do think there's space to discuss Islam in certain countries and a general concern that compared to Christianity and other "dying" religions, it is uniquely popular among young people, unique in that you see subsets of Muslims moving toward *stricter* adherence, and unique in that it is a *new* religion introduced in some countries that is gaining prominence
All of that is concerning, but not in a clash of civilizations way, not in a way that has to do specifically with Islam, not in a way that should ever involve bigotry.
But it's uncomfortable and hard to talk about because the adherents are usually brown, "foreign" (π±), and a very discriminated against group.
And so! People should be careful in their critiques. And a lot of online atheists are too happy to blast Islam in a way that really leaves the door open for plain bigotry to come in (or do so out of bigotry itself!)
And ofc this takes words words words to say, and I've barely even managed to say anything with all *these* words! And so... people just default to saying "oh no don't say bad things about Islam, don't be a bigot" which is fair 90% of the time.
But it does prevent a niche point that is growing in importance imo. Secular societies are important and it's GOOD that religious influence on life has decayed, because the link between discrimination and religion has always been far too strong.
I guess it's basically impossible not to run into the uncomfortable parts precisely because the implicit assumption that religion follows an evolutionary process similar to the End of History, which Christianity is more or less at the end of, and Islam has a ways to go on, kind of lends itself to an idea of "civilized/uncivilized"
Believing in a subhuman/human dichotomy is Nazism. Itβs the core of that ideology.
So, I donβt think you can call yourself a neoliberal if you believe that any human can be subhuman, vermin, etc. No, not even Nazis themselves or terrorist are subhuman.
Yeah. But it's often an emotional response to serious violence.
If someone is upset about the extreme violence engaged in by Nazis or terrorists and says they need to be removed in order to protect the peace. I don't find fault with that argument.
I definitely wouldn't lecture someone who called Hamas members who engaged in the 10/7 atrocity subhuman because I empathize with them and understand that they don't want to hate their fellow man so they'd rather see these killers as less than human.
It might be an inappropriate way to cope with the urge for retribution but it's hard for people to separate actions necessary for public safety from acts of vengeance.
That upset is often wilfully self-invoked. I agree that this is acceptable for people that were (to some degree) directly involved in extreme violence.
But most people were not. If you simply read a story of e.g. Russians torturing civilians in Ukraine then you can probably decide if you want to think with your head or if you want to keep spreading the ideology that you hate. I am not buying that the vast majority of people that use these terms are suffering from a trauma.
I try not to measure others trauma or emotional response to extreme violence but I agree that in the long run its important to understand that human beings are capable of deeply evil acts so diminishing there humanity only diminishes your understanding of what people are capable of.
There's a further point about how important it is to offer people, who are capable, redemption. But I avoid bringing it up when people are, understandably, emotional.
Many Nazis in Germany were people that thought they "had a hard job and needed to dirty their hands". There isn't a secret evil behind it, they were human beings. The Holocaust was a unique atrocity, but most actors involves were not. Painting them as something "other" isn't a good lesson.
Not even the people at the top were βsubhumanβ. Itβs easy to make the argument about that the whole population certainly wasnβt evil like for example shown in Ordinary Men. But even people like Hitler, Goebbels or Eichmann were human. They were driven by ideology, bad science, emotions, structures and environment like anybody else could have been given the right circumstances.
>Its principal line of defence against predation is to bury itself in a silk-lined burrow extending 40β50 cm deep. During the process of digging its burrow, the spider can shift up to 10 litres (2.6 US gal) of sand, 80,000 times its body weight. It is during the initial stages of building a burrow that the spider is vulnerable to pompilid wasps, which sting and paralyze the spider, then lay eggs in its body. If the spider is unable to fight off a wasp, and if it is on a sloped dune, it will use its rolling speed of 1 metre per second (3.3 ft/s) to escape.

> Banning it [the hijab] worked fine in Turkey though, until you got an islamist for president
Out of the longer than you would expect list of things Turkey did correctly, banning the hijab is not one of them.
It might reduce the wearisome American chauvinist-Democrat partisan synergy here. On the other hand, it might cause the US to slide into an illiberal democracy, stifle the civil rights of millions and destabilise the world in a way that provides openings for aggressive authoritarian regimes so I'm rather cold on the idea.
Reddit constantly thinking Netflix and now McDonaldβs are going to go belly up ANY DAY NOW BECAUSE OF THEIR CORPORATE GREED is such a hilarious thing to witness.
In the meantime their profits are up and people keep buying their stuff. I think numbers for them are only anemic because of the turmoil in the Middle East. People are getting paid more and real consumption is up
Reddit being super proud of itself for not buying things it thinks are too expensive. The circlejerk about basic personal finance is insane. No wonder inflation was sticky
It sucks having your social role and personality enclosed into a box, but being yet-unknown by someone youβre just meeting is stressful too. The comfort of knowing which part you play isnβt there, your dialogue on the script is blank.

Thereβs something about the child free lifestyle where a lot of people are totally okay with accepting that some people donβt want children, but as soon as it becomes like a significant subculture people absolutely fuckimg hate it.
I guess itβs kind of like marvel movies. People are totally fine with the fact that some people like comic book/ βnerd cultureβ but when it feels like itβs subsuming everything else people become radically anti-capeshit
Iβm sure thereβs a term for this but idk what it is
Probably also has a lot to do with how insufferable, miserable, hateful, and generally insane childfree communities tend to be
If they were just fucking normal about it, maybe there wouldnβt be as much backlash, but it seems like no sort of anti-anything community can exist without becoming an absolute cesspit
Edit: Also, I think the term youβre looking for is βcontrarianismβ, but I donβt think itβs as significant a factor in anti-childfree backlash as it is in anti-Marvel backlash, because although Marvel communities can certainly be goofy and cringe or whatever, they generally arenβt as batshit insane as childfree communities can be. Iβm sure it is still a factor, but people also have other reasons to hate childfree communities, whereas with the Marvel stuff, itβs mostly contrarianism and people lashing out because theyβre just irritated at seeing it everywhere, I think
I mean I donβt want to catch any flack here butβ¦ a lot of people donβt have kids for selfish reasons and canβt imagine caring for another person or having that level of patience or empathy and just want to be the main character and do what they want all the time
Nothing inherently wrong with that - we all only get so many trips around the sun - but build a community full out of people who largely have those traits and yeah youβre going to get massive amounts of toxicity
A recent pew poll shows among women under 45, 90% either have kids, want kids or regret not having kids. Only 8% were resolute in not wanting them. Itβs a very different picture than the vocal online minority paints
what's the most specific, yet broad/high chance, assumption we can make about this place?
like a 95% chance to be 3 of: educated, urban, under 40, earns >50% of local median income for their age range.... something like that
circlejerking aside, I don't want to diminish the role or presence of our significant chunk of (especially active) non-white users
we're OOOONLY like 91% white according to the last survey
idk how ironic this is π
I think most Indians would not self-identify as white, especially when you consider most are in... India where American/Anglosphere/Euro "whiteness" doesn't graph congruently
even lots of lily or white-passing Hispanics don't
idk, I've long wondered how non-white identifying members feel about the "haha everyone here is white" jokes. I don't have any particular presumption, but I've seen a couple users say how they do or how they don't like that vibe
It does sound like his answer to "so what about unrealized losses? do you refund then?" was chadyes.jpg.
Which actually might make this a somewhat defensible countercyclical policy.

A lot.
The biggie is that the community sucks at engaging with media, even with the crutch of pre-made tropes. They suck at critique, suck at analysis, and even suck at neutrally codifying the very tropes they say they discuss. Tropes are tropes really only if the audience understands their use and can appreciate, without a lot of explanation, when they are used or subverted. They are a part of the language that media creators use to communicate with audiences to set, manage, and subvert expectations.
Most tropes on TVTropes don't do that anymore. They are just things that happen in media, without any of the idea that these are fundamentally a part of the grammar of media.
Codified tropes in general only really work for genre fiction, as it gets much stretcher when there isn't a genre with expectations for a work to interact with, but God does TVTropes try to make that work too.
Beyond that, they played a massive part in that group huggie Fandom culture bullshit that originated on Tumblr and still crops up a lot, especially in fanfiction communities. The forums and YMMV pages in particular are areas where lots of Fandom drama gets litigated as fact.
Content policy sucks, and many of the works that are banned are not bad at all. In general, I hate sites that glowingly accept ultraviolence but can't handle shit with explicit sex scenes. Like, they banned and had to reinstate the Fate/Stay Night page, the Lolita page, the Caligula page, and other pages. 2 of those are works that are widely discussed in literary circles, and the Fate series is a bigger media empire than Pokemon even at this point by yearly sales.
Finally, I think that they, along with Cinema Sins, worsened media critique by a lot among nerd audiences. Breaking media into constituent parts without looking at it holistically is always a bad idea, and the way TVTropes taught people to only break down is horrible. It's like judging a recipe based only on its ingredients and without ever making or tasting the damned thing. It's stupid.
Anyone who self identifies as a troper has brain rot and needs to be quarantined in a high school locker till it is cured.

Fun fact: Lex Luthor was never originally intended to be bald. In his first few appearances, he had a full head of red hair. In *Superman #10* (May 1940) one artist accidentally drew him bald, either confusing him for the Ultra-Humanite or a previously shown bald henchman.
Either way, the design stuck, and heβs been Lusvig ever since.

Wheel spiders are fucking chads

McDonaldβs is looking to create a cheaper menu options because no reason at all.
In the meantime their profits are up and people keep buying their stuff. I think numbers for them are only anemic because of the turmoil in the Middle East. People are getting paid more and real consumption is up

Oh. I thought you were just mentioning a random narc. Didn't know this was a guy with a following and with issues.
Big following where he mocks people for not spending thirty seconds walking their cart to its spot He's right, and a complete dick about it in a way that is so much worse than them slightly invonveniencing a grocery store cashier who probably wants to stretch their legs anyway I always volunteered to get carts whenever I had the opportunity at the liquor store
Thereβs something about the child free lifestyle where a lot of people are totally okay with accepting that some people donβt want children, but as soon as it becomes like a significant subculture people absolutely fuckimg hate it. I guess itβs kind of like marvel movies. People are totally fine with the fact that some people like comic book/ βnerd cultureβ but when it feels like itβs subsuming everything else people become radically anti-capeshit Iβm sure thereβs a term for this but idk what it is
It's when they start demanding that every place be child free that people get annoyed with them.
Probably also has a lot to do with how insufferable, miserable, hateful, and generally insane childfree communities tend to be If they were just fucking normal about it, maybe there wouldnβt be as much backlash, but it seems like no sort of anti-anything community can exist without becoming an absolute cesspit Edit: Also, I think the term youβre looking for is βcontrarianismβ, but I donβt think itβs as significant a factor in anti-childfree backlash as it is in anti-Marvel backlash, because although Marvel communities can certainly be goofy and cringe or whatever, they generally arenβt as batshit insane as childfree communities can be. Iβm sure it is still a factor, but people also have other reasons to hate childfree communities, whereas with the Marvel stuff, itβs mostly contrarianism and people lashing out because theyβre just irritated at seeing it everywhere, I think
I mean I donβt want to catch any flack here butβ¦ a lot of people donβt have kids for selfish reasons and canβt imagine caring for another person or having that level of patience or empathy and just want to be the main character and do what they want all the time Nothing inherently wrong with that - we all only get so many trips around the sun - but build a community full out of people who largely have those traits and yeah youβre going to get massive amounts of toxicity A recent pew poll shows among women under 45, 90% either have kids, want kids or regret not having kids. Only 8% were resolute in not wanting them. Itβs a very different picture than the vocal online minority paints

Tangentially related WW2 lore I recently learned that my grand uncle died in a Japanese POW camp after surviving the Bataan death march. He was around my age. 2 months before the war ended, RIP π Itβs kind of like amazing to think about like it makes the war feel more personal to me knowing I have immediate relatives that paid the ultimate price for freedom I have not been privy to the lore on my dads side of the family until recently for various reasons (late grandfather was not good to dad at all and they were estranged since he left the house)
I visited my great grand uncle's grave on the Somme as a teenager. I know almost nothing about him and yet it's one of the most devastating moments of my life. And when arrayed with the hundreds that rest beside him in that one small cemetery outside of Amiens . . . yeah, I cry just thinking about it. I worry deeply that we're tumbling into another world war that we can't stop. π

The looming and later actual capabilities of long-range ballistic missiles in the late 50s and 60s killed a whole bunch of cool military projects. It was largely things like new very fast strategic bombers and interceptors but also shitty 50s intercontinental cruise missiles. >Many in the U.S. Military were surprised the Snark, due to its dubious guidance system, was ever operational. The most accurate of the seven full-range flights from June 1958 and May 1959 had fallen 4.2 nautical miles left of and .3 nautical miles short the target. In flight tests many were lost. A missile launched from Cape Canaveral in 1956 that was supposed to fly to Puerto Rico and back flew so far off course that it was last seen on radar off the coast of Venezuela. The wayward wreckage of the Snark missile was found in northeastern Brazil in 1983.
