Selling off the data of users is bordering the line of unethical behavior *at best*. The bean counters and middle management of this subreddit never really discusses the issues of those with mental impairments nor children when it comes to this. Or those who neither have the time nor the ability to read through absurdly long Terms and Services conditions.

If your entire company canβt find a way to make a heavily monetized site while you skirt the lines of ethics to sell user data and offer premium subscriptions and *still* canβt find a way to be profitable, you probably deserve it.
First off Iβm safe, at home, and nothing happened, got an Uber back to my place etc. Posting here because no fucking hotlines will answer, BetterHelp wonβt answer, and I donβt want to talk to anyone else because itβs fucking embarrassing, but I think I was slipped a date rape drug tonight. Iβm a straight man, with complex trauma, and Iβm just fucking mad that I was so stupid. A guy was kind of stalking me the whole night but he seemed nice enough, and was bitching about his wife, and when I walked back in after a smoke break he just handed me a drink, and I was so FUCKING STUPID and just took a few sips, and it tasted medicinish, and within the hour was feeling off, and like I just took ambien.
I don't really care if people use ad-blockers, and depending on the site I use one myself, but there is something really funny about how bent out of shape people get when YouTube tries to crack down on them. Entitlement isn't exactly rare on the internet, yet it's still a little shocking just how many people think YouTube is the bad guy for not letting people use their site completely free and without ads.
I agree in some cases, especially if I use YouTube on my TV, but as far as for my phone or PC I barely even notice them. I definitely haven't ever thought "I need ad-blocker" when using YouTube.
I get maybe a 15 seconds ad or a skippable ad every 4-5 videos, and maybe an occasional mid-roll if the video is like 30+ minutes long. I think for the most part it's just people who got used to ad-blocker and aren't happy to have to watch ads again, but if I got the same ad experience on my computer that I do on my TV I might change my opinion.
I don't know, maybe they secretly punish people who have used ad-blockers in the past. I personally don't notice any more ads than I did years ago, unless I use the YouTube TV app for some reason, but maybe I'm just incredibly good at tuning them out and am focused on other stuff while they play.
I was mostly joking since it feels like I'm living in a different reality than other people when I read some of the comments on Reddit about this stuff. For how few ads it feels like I get, it feels like there must be something going on for the people who talk like they've been beaten to death with them.
!ping SPACEFLIGHT
Now that the final flight of VSS *Unity* [is complete](https://spacenews.com/virgin-galactic-conducts-final-vss-unity-commercial-suborbital-spaceflight/), I'm left wondering - what future, if any, is there for Virgin Galactic? Currently, they're planning on having the first of their new vehicles flying by late 2025 and in revenue service by 2026, but in this industry we all know that that means flying by 2026 and revenue service by Q4 '26 or 2027 at the earliest. [They've got](https://investors.virgingalactic.com/news/news-details/2024/Virgin-Galactic-Announces-Fourth-Quarter-and-Full-Year-2023-Financial-Results-and-Provides-Business-Update/default.aspx) just shy of a billion dollars in cash, they lost $502 million last year against $7 million in revenue. I'd expect revenue to fall given that they're not going to be making any commercial flights until 2026 at least, so where does that leave them? Not to mention that they're [considering a reverse split](https://spacenews.com/virgin-galactic-proposes-reverse-stock-split/) on their stock to stay in compliance with NYSE listing requirements ($SPCE closed up on Friday at $0.85). Honestly, I think today was the last flight Virgin Galactic will ever make. I've thought this company was circling the drain for a long time, but given the pretty dire financial situation they're in, I don't see how they'll ever make it to commercial service on the Delta class.
The whole thing is kind of reminiscent of Astra's implosion - their fate was sealed when they axed Rocket3 in favor of Rocket4, which is also likely never to fly at this point. They're delisting *themselves* pretty soon, actually.
VG is a space libertarian experiment that was wrong from the very beginning. We are all better off having this experiment fail. Ironically, the government might think differently. Delta class is effectively cancelled with VG fighting with their subcontractors, but NASA Armstrong has elected to renew VG's flight contract for now along with BO. The government isn't a fan of monopolies but NASA is also not a fan of ignoring safety standards.
Astra was a government contractor that has never built anything not to government requirements aside from the EP stuff they bought, so being debarred from federal contracts without any experience in actually building a commercial vehicle for the commercial market means that they aren't able survive off commercial market alone. As a matter of fact, R4 as a program was terminated in summer 2023. Who knows, they've been around for 19 years, maybe they can last a little longer. No comment on the delisting, don't want Senator Nelson to get mad at me.
>As a matter of fact, R4 as a program was terminated in summer 2023.
Woah woah woah, what?! According to who?
To the space libertarian point - I do agree, and I really do think that SpaceShipTwo as a system was deeply, deeply unsafe, and that it's probably for the best that it'll likely never fly again.
As you note, they're losing half a billion a year, and have a billion in the bank. That means they've got two years until bankruptcy. Now, in theory they could try to cut down their cash burn, but they're also deep in development of their "next generaion" vehicles, so if they cut cash burn, that delays that program. Which they can't afford either. So I don't see an answer that leads to them flying ever again.
It's an quagmire. You can't cut spending because any spending cut will directly delay your return to desperately needed revenue, but equally you can't spend at the rate you're spending. I honestly don't get the decision to completely cease operations with *Unity,* given that flying it once every few months could at least keep SOME money coming in. The only explanations are that they were operating it at a significant loss, or that there was some major engineering problem with it that made it infeasible to continue to operate "safely."^(1) Or, honestly, probably a combination of the two.
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
1: [See Alexander the Ok's excellent video](https://youtu.be/R5XEZfzoxvY?si=UoeZ7g87ms9gcWBo) on the subject
It's possible the maintenance costs needed to keep it "operational" would exceed the revenue they could gain by flying it once a month. I know that for orbital launch, there's usually some minimum cadence needed to break even (e.g., having your amortized fixed costs + variable costs be less than or equal to revenue), and their existing vehicle may not have had a path towards such a cadence.
The whole thing didn't make any financial sense from the outset. Being 20 years late with the revenue generating service doesn't help
Like, i can see how a design like New Shepard or what Armadillo was cooking way back when could run cashflow positive, but VG just wont
And even with NS, that seems to me at least to have pretty clearly been a testbed for a lot of technologies Blue Origin wants to develop anyway that they (probably incorrectly) figured could be turned into a valid product in and of itself. I would argue that in Blue's case, it ended up being a boondoggle that cost them valuable time and money, but it did definitely move them closer to their long term goals. I think NS isn't going to stay around much longer - once New Glenn gets flying, they'll cut their losses on Shepard pretty quickly.
Part of that is that I just think there's no market for the kind of suborbital space tourism that VG and Blue are offering. The number of people willing to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to go to fly around in microgravity in space for ten minutes is not very large, and almost none of them will be repeat customers. Blue, to their credit, seems to understand this by never planning on having suborbital tourism be their primary business. Virgin Galactic, on the other hand, has literally no other revenue stream. So my question is, even if they by some miracle get Delta into revenue service and make it profitable, what happens once they work through their existing backlog? How many people are out there that are willing to blow upwards of a quarter of a million dollars on a ten minute spaceflight who haven't already signed up?
> could be turned into a valid product in and of itself.
If they were flying it with any sort of real cadence, it could be. Parachutes somewhat limit how fast you can turn one around with how small of a crew, but you could have multiple capsules pipelined for a single booster.
No clue why they aren't flying it more often at some sort of entry pricing. I'd buy a flight if it was like a price of a car
> How many people are out there that are willing to blow upwards of a quarter of a million dollars on a ten minute spaceflight who haven't already signed up?
The issue isn't lack of demand, the issue is their design makes it a quarter million dollar thing. If they had a liquid fueled ship that didn't require a huge bespoke carrier plane with insane operations costs, they could operate it at a small multiple of propellant costs.
At $10k a pop, there would be huge market
I mean, isn't a lack of demand at the price point being offered functionally equivalent to a lack of demand in the general sense? I agree that if they could sell it for the price of a particularly extravagant vacation instead of the price of a house, many more would be willing to do it. But as you described, they can't sell it at that cost, so those customers don't exist.
Also, my other take on this is that SS2 is a deeply unsafe vehicle and it's probably for the better that it'll never fly again.
There is no lack of demand for suborbital spaceflight tourism in general. It could be a billion dollar annual market. There certainly will be limited demand for it at $250k, it won't be more than a few tens of millions a year in total market size
Their design sucks, it's that simple. It's mind boggling they are sticking to the same limited core idea 20 years in
I have zero idea why they insisted on sticking with the SpaceShipOne design. SpaceShipOne was designed to do one thing and one thing only - win the Ansari XPrize. Trying to expand a bespoke, single-seat experimental vehicle into a viable commercial product was I think the mistake that kind of ended up being the root of all Virgin Galactic related evil, so to speak.

I really hate the word "enshittification". It's just a cheap attempt to use vulgar language to draw attention to a concept, but it's not descriptive. And because of how vague it sounds, its usage has shifted from "tech companies getting big then fleecing their users" to "any change on the internet that I don't like". It degrades discussions into aimless whine-fests, it's basically the phrase "late stage capitalism" but for discussions about social media companies.
It doesn't help that Cory Doctorow can't stop stroking himself off for creating the term and has to use it 40 fucking times in every article he writes about it. As if half the people using it have the slightest clue about social media company profit incentives and aren't just using it to lend credence to whatever random shit they're complaining about.
I really beg that biologists have a basic understanding of economics.
How can you look at the fact that every second rate state school and their mom has a biology PhD program and not realize that youβd get paid shit going into biology?
For comparison, there are 150 econ PhD programs in the US *in total*.
And then yβall are gonna get on Reddit and complain about getting paid shit and then academics in other fields have to be bothered by uninformed opinions from uninformed people about how they shouldnβt do a PhD lol.
> For comparison, there are 150 econ PhD programs in the US in total.
Good we don't need anymore econ PhDs. A surplus biological research is useful, I can't say the same about econ PhDs
Yeah because we produce a surplus the government funds more money into biophds so there's a surplus to reduce their market rate which is great.
You honestly think we need more economic research as a society? A lot of the basic research done by biology phds has value even if we don't pay for it after the fact.
The market is a good determiner of value but it isn't only determiner of value. Research externalities in biology are just far higher.
Check out Keep from All Thoughtful Men: How US Economists Won World War II.
American economics correctly estimated how many fighter jets Nazi Germany was producing each month during WWII.
The market isnβt perfect but it does tell you which skills are more scarce/sought after.
I didn't say that they were useless I just said we didn't need a surplus. They do not produce comparable externalities. I know a lot of good people who have PhDs in economics but that doesn't mean we want to produce more of them.
Market tells you about what skills are scarce relative to the money demanding but doesn't mean I think we should make a bunch of programs to train investment bankers either. Subsidized things based on externalities. They can produce exnalities but I am in no way convinced more of them in the US would produce lots of them. Maybe with the exception of international students from places in the third world where there probably are very high externalities such education.
Ok thatβs fair.
Well the vast majority of econ PhD students in the US are international. A lot of them end up becoming top economists at the central banks of their home countries or at international organizations like IMF. So credit where credit is due, econ PhD programs do generate a lot of positive externalities.
Biology requires lots of PhD students to run all the expirements. Biology research is run on the backs of cheap grad students. Economics research doesn't require as much labor.
>How can you look at the fact that every second rate state school and their mom has a biology PhD program and not realize that youβd get paid shit going into biology?
What else do you do when you don't get into med school?
> what else do you do when you donβt get into med school?
There are a lot of career paths that are more lucrative than a PhD in biology. Coding bootcamp, biostats, bioinformatics, etc.

Let's say you wake up one day with a magic new super power. The super power is that every time you do a line of cocaine, you cure the nearest person to you with cancer of their illness.
If you had this super power, how often would you do cocaine? The cocaine will have the normal health risks you're not like immune to it.
Assuming this was real and I could prove it was real I would probably test the limits of what cocaine is from the impacts on saving people to become a sort of cocaine snorting machine. Other approaches might figure out how to create the thinnest possible line to maximize the total line consumption for the minimum amount of cocaine.
That's what I was thinking. And a hospital or the government or something should pay for the health monitoring.
I feel like you'd still be high as fuck for most of your waking hours though.

Right, here's a question I've been wondering: considering how much of our government and doctrines are descended from London, how did Australia's right wing movement become a more American-styled individualist, small-government, free market, free speech and libertine affair compared to Tory paternalism?
Because Australia's government documents aren't actually only descended from the UK. The drafting of the constitution of Australia was very much connected with the American tradition. Australian common law is more closely connected to the UK than the US but its general statutory and legislative structures are built in many ways on the American system with a parliamentary twist.
You can't also forget that Australia is built on the same sort of frontier idea that you see in America and the New World too which is inherently individulistic. Culturally America is also more important now and probably since Curtain.
More interesting question I guess would be why New Zealand is like that because their government really is descended from Britain very closely. I mean the only real difference is the lack of a House of Lords
More funding from American organisations than British ones. The former is also more right-wing than the latter, so rightist extremists would be more likely to follow the former. Conservatism in the UK has also largely been replaced by all those things too.
I'm not hugely across specifics, but Australia never really had a Tory tradition. Federation Era Australian politics was split between the Protectionist Party, Free Trade Party and Labor Party. Unfortunately, the Free Trade party was the loser out of that and the country goes down the path of the White Australia Policy, trade protectionism and the tripartite industrial relations/centralised wage fixing system.
Economic drys start making a comeback in the Fraser era through the Liberal Party through MPs such as Bert Kelly and John Hyde, and eventually through Howard come to dominate the party.
As for why we've never gone back towards a One Nation Conservatism like the Tory's eventually did after Thatcher I'm not sure, but not having that strong Tory tradition as an alternative and the continuation of the view that the Howard era was a recent golden era to be emulated both feel right.

>The central implication of maximising behaviour amid competition is that rates of return tend toward equality.
We test that implication in a market whose participants have the traits that behavioural economics suggests
should make it hardest to find evidence of maximisation: the market for panhandling at Metrorail stations in
Washington, District of Columbia. We find that stations with more panhandling opportunities attract more
panhandlers and that cross-station differences in hourly panhandling receipts are statistically indistinguishable
from zero. Panhandling rates of return thus tend toward equality. Extreme βbehaviouralβ traits do not prevent
maximisation in this market.

YouTube ads are fucking unhinged, YouTube should get normal ads if they want to have the moral high ground on βpeople donβt want to see adsβ
I noticed my YouTube activity dropped sharply on my computers when they took Adblock, and I didnβt use it more on my phone.
I don't know, maybe they secretly punish people who have used ad-blockers in the past. I personally don't notice any more ads than I did years ago, unless I use the YouTube TV app for some reason, but maybe I'm just incredibly good at tuning them out and am focused on other stuff while they play.
> maybe they secretly punish people who have used ad-blockers in the past YouTube is not that competent
I was mostly joking since it feels like I'm living in a different reality than other people when I read some of the comments on Reddit about this stuff. For how few ads it feels like I get, it feels like there must be something going on for the people who talk like they've been beaten to death with them.

!ping SPACEFLIGHT Now that the final flight of VSS *Unity* [is complete](https://spacenews.com/virgin-galactic-conducts-final-vss-unity-commercial-suborbital-spaceflight/), I'm left wondering - what future, if any, is there for Virgin Galactic?
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ 1: [See Alexander the Ok's excellent video](https://youtu.be/R5XEZfzoxvY?si=UoeZ7g87ms9gcWBo) on the subject
Being 20 years late with the revenue generating service doesn't help Like, i can see how a design like New Shepard or what Armadillo was cooking way back when could run cashflow positive, but VG just wont
I'd buy a flight if it was like a price of a car > How many people are out there that are willing to blow upwards of a quarter of a million dollars on a ten minute spaceflight who haven't already signed up?
There certainly will be limited demand for it at $250k, it won't be more than a few tens of millions a year in total market size Their design sucks, it's that simple.

The market disagrees with u bro. Look at how much econ PhDs get paid vs. how much biology PhDs get paid.

I would do it as much as possible and charge people as much as possible.
I would have constant medical monitoring to do as much as possible. Unless someone I didn't like got cancer, then I would stop.
That's what I was thinking. And a hospital or the government or something should pay for the health monitoring. I feel like you'd still be high as fuck for most of your waking hours though.

I saw a notification that I've been approved to post or something but I really don't care now. I prefer it here.

When will be acceptable to light up a joint at family gatherings the same way you might pour yourself a glass of wine
I know multiple families like this
Depends on the family. Iβve hung out with friendsβ families where itβs acceptable. Itβs not with mine but neither is alcohol. Probably can find a lot of families like who are cool with it here in California
hopefully never. fuck hard drugs, stick with natural things like alcohol and nicotine

Im moving into the wilderness if this becomes socially acceptable. Stoners annoy me so much
It is at about half the Mexican family gatherings I've attended
Probably never just because of the nature of the drug. Alcohol is a 'social' drug while weed makes you quiet and introspective.

Itβs ironic that basically through the entire West weβre seeing the youth vote shift relatively to the right, and then meanwhile in the UK theyβd rather die then vote Tory

Just found a commie saying that trade schools are actually a bad thing Does bro literally think that infrastructure and housing will just spawn into existence when the glorious revolution is over?
>glorious revolution Based and Orange-pilled
I think commies do think all the luxuries theyβve grown accustomed to will randomly spawn after the revolution succeeds and they all get to spend their days as poets and basket-weavers
A natural extension of their anti-trade economic position.
Iβm a democrat
Hey kids, Peter Griffin here to explain the joke! You see, reddit is liberal, and then the fucker made /r/neoliberal to make even more of an echo chamber. But that echo chamber is still too big so like 50 people per day comment like 200 times in the discussion thread which is an even smaller echo chamber. In this echo chamber, everyone is a big fan of democrats. So him identifying as one and stating it is humorous because that information is already known by the community! Well that's the joke! Peter-Copter awayyyyyy!! Ehhhehhhehehhehehhhehehehhehehe

!ping AUS Right, here's a question I've been wondering: considering how much of our government and doctrines are descended from London, how did Australia's right wing movement become a more American-styled individualist, small-government, free market, free speech and libertine affair compared to Tory paternalism?
I meant doctrine, as in common law tradition, but you've already answered that as well.
Because America got a Cultural Victory and now all political movements, especially on the fringes, ape them.

>Economic analysis is a theoretical approach, not an empirical one. It is a way of thinking, not a way of testing. An analysis that has an empirical component can be economic without being quantitative: eco- nomics is not statistics. An atheoretical analysis can never be economic, no matter how impressive its regressions: statistics is not economics. I take it back, I hate him
>I study the special problems that chantry contract promisees faced in enforcing their rights from the grave and analyze the devices they used for that purpose. yes, the special problem of contract enforcement when you're dead how has this man not won an Ig Nobel yet
Because enforcement after death is a legitimately interesting legal question. That is probably historical research think looking at the origin of chantry contracts. Can be relevant today with the rule against perpetuities and potentially the creation of more novel trust structuresβI think I saw someone working on how that could be done via decentralized autonomous organizations a couple years back. Did you actually read the paper? I imagine it involved using the church for monasteries but I'm curious if other institutions provided similar services particularly among the laity? If you didn't would you mind sharing a copy for me to glance over?
oh i mean i'm sure it's interesting but the phrasing is just peak economics writer
I probably would have written that very similarly so perhaps I should reflect

>The central implication of maximising behaviour amid competition is that rates of return tend toward equality. We test that implication in a market whose participants have the traits that behavioural economics suggests should make it hardest to find evidence of maximisation: the market for panhandling at Metrorail stations in Washington, District of Columbia. We find that stations with more panhandling opportunities attract more panhandlers and that cross-station differences in hourly panhandling receipts are statistically indistinguishable from zero. Panhandling rates of return thus tend toward equality. Extreme βbehaviouralβ traits do not prevent maximisation in this market. INCREDIBLE this paper is called Hobo Economicus lmao
