my friend and I use it, partially because it's just so much more efficient than autistic person (just 2 syllables vs 5, blergh)... also because I love and think it's hilarious that it sounds like "artist" and if spoken quickly could be confused with that because I'm also an artist of sorts and I just find it so funny that it could be misheard and a sentence jsut totally messed up in an amusing manner
Personally I feel it's slang rooted in old internet culture.
Specifically 4Chan birthed this term to my knowledge. I know there are some people who say that it was coined by 4Channers because they aren't autistic. I think that's bullshit, the 4Chan Anons who coined this were most certainly autistic themselves.
Eventually this term was adopted more broadly by /pol/ and other boards to refer to themselves autistic or not, and then was used during the "Great Meme War". With most of 4Chan's contributions to the internet, their terminology got re-appropriated by the mainstream. From here the term Autist which may have in fact been offensive once, has since been silently reclaimed by the autistic community. The is one such successful case of reclamation of a word in our community. Unlike the r-word, the term autist is one specifically something for autistic folks, and for this reason alongside it being co-popularised by most certainly autistic internet users... I would say it was formerly offensive but not anymore especially when the word exists in an esoteric space on the internet.
Just because it was used by racist 4Chan users at some point doesn't mean we should let it be stained that way.
Also if you are wondering who thinks the term isn't autistic in origin... I am specifically thinking of the Alt-Right Glossary on RationalWiki... It just mildly bothers me that's all. Lol
Also keep in mind, typically speaking we are a lot more vulnerable to far right talking points if not provided an alternative worldview to explain our own misfortunes. In our case Neurodiversity is the accurate worldview which helps us, for myself it's Neurodiversity when combined with Marxism, I think that ultimately autistic people and other neurodivergent comrades need be taught how to think rather than just what to think. But thats a seperate issue.
But if anything, individual preferences and asking people if they are okay with such terms. I am fine with using the word autist but it's purely a slang term and may not be appropriate in more serious situations.
It's the Swedish word for "autistic person", so to me it's just regular. But people prefer "autistisk" (descriptive word) instead of being labeled AS something. More like, having traits from a disorder rather than being a disorder.
that's the word I used instead of "autistic" a couple years ago because my first language is Spanish and we say "autistas" not "autisticos" (autisticos is not even grammatically correct), but in English most people say "autistic people/person"
Here in the Dutch language, there’s also some discussion about it.
Autist is used a lot, by both people on the spectrum and NT alike.
Some like it, some don’t.
My son who is 12, really likes it and he kind of says it jokingly sometimes when referring to himself or his friends.
More power to him in this manner.
I feel this is bathed in nuance and context how it’s used and why.
It depends, do you say « I’m autist » or « I’m an autist »? If you use it as an adjective, it’s fine, as this is how we describe autistic people in french (Je suis autiste = I’m autist(ic)). If you use it as a noun, it’s quite weird, it feels weird to say « I’m an autist », maybe it’s just me though
I really don’t like it but I can’t articulate why
I describe myself as an Autie but wouldn’t use that to describe anyone else unless I knew that was ok with them
I mean I wouldn't go so far as to say it's a *slur* but it's definitely a word that makes a lot of people uncomfortable. I know that if somebody called me an autist, I would recoil.
I’ve usually used the term autistic to describe myself I didn’t find out that I was on the autism spectrum until I was 25-36 I’m 31 now

In my language an autista is someone who drives. Like, a bus.
It sounds weird.

it's not a vocation or hobby. I don't practise autism. Like an artist practises art or a flautist practises the flute. For me, that's why it's weird.

there's something about the word that's cringy in a funny way. fun to use ironically
No, I use it because I think it's funny
I don’t like it personally, but I also don’t have any major issues/gripes about it

It’s not a slur or anything but I find it super weird. But everybody has their own preference.

The english word "autist" is a noun: [https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/autist](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/autist)
Ah thanks, then it’s weird… I thought it could be used like « queer », we say « I’m queer » not « I’m a queer ».
A black, a gay, etc. Using adjectives as nouns is a common dog whistle for bigots. That's probably why it sounds so weird.
That's better than "je suis un aspi" which still is half the time understood as I'm a vacuum cleaner.
Hahahaha j'avais pas pensé à ça !
Bah lorsque la personne m'a demandé si j'étais gourmante ou maniaque j'ai compris qu'il y avait un problème.
HAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHHAHAH
A word to be reclaimed. (Like "queer")
"Reclaimed" as in that it's okay to use the word for yourself, but don't use it for other people unless they say it's fine.
i like it and i'm happy to use it. but i've seen a few people say they don't like it, which is sad
I’ll use it for myself seriously, the community in jest, and never a singular other person. Strange but detailed hierarchy of respect for individuals.
same
I use it fairly frequently, though somewhat tongue in cheek
I really don’t like it but I can’t articulate why I describe myself as an Autie but wouldn’t use that to describe anyone else unless I knew that was ok with them
i’ll take autist over “aspie” and “neurospicy” any day lol
Oh neurospicy is fun!
Likewise neurosparkly
Oh. That’s even better I’m stealing that!
There's a guy on YouTube who's from Australia or New Zealand who uses "autist". First time I've come across the word.
Some people use it for themselves, I don’t like it for me
i hate it. first i ever saw it was as an insult from 4chan.
I mean I wouldn't go so far as to say it's a *slur* but it's definitely a word that makes a lot of people uncomfortable. I know that if somebody called me an autist, I would recoil.
Good to know. I will refrain from using this word in the future
I use auti for myself, you can refer to yourself how you please just other people you have to take into account.
