Seems like the other 2 were deliberately slower to take the turn normally. On the other hand the mc driver could go full gas for longer bcs of this manoeuvre slowing them down enough
They had the lead specifically because they pulled the maneuver. This is the start of the race. The other two cars don't take off/accelerate to as high a speed because they aren't planning on pulling such a stunt and need to be at a low speed to take their turn. I don't think you know much about racing.
Once the race starts there is a leader as soon as they aren't in an even line anymore. Some races have a leader before the race even starts. They were ahead of the other cars going into the turn which means they were already in the lead. They did that maneuver to keep the lead and extend it a little further.
They are also going to take off and accelerate as much as possible, they will just brake sooner.
You sound dumb as shit to be honest.
In motorsport commentary, oftentimes a driver hasn't really taken the lead until they can cement it because in many cases you can pass a leading car for one corner and immediately lose it (the 'lead' and control of your own car) because they slowed down to get a better driving line for the next corner while you braked extremely late and (in some cases) locked your brakes in order to get ahead in the first place. Ericsson kept his foot on the throttle whereas the other two were braking and trying to hug the insider of the corner which is why he blew past them.
You still take the lead. Commentator will say you are in second because you entered a series of chicanes on the inside line for first taking the lead from the car beside you.
On second part of the chicane you are on the outside and the inside car takes the lead if you are side by side.
They still note the position swap and at the first stage they always remark about whether or not they can make the position change stick on the exit of the next part of the chicane.
Even in this case Ericsson went to P2 mid corner. After being in P1 at corner entry. His better exit lets him take the lead thanks to this entry. So he still takes the lead due to the slide.
Without getting ahead before the entry and doing this slide he would of been P2 at exit due to not having the inside line and had to keep speed longer for the slide to work due to not being on the outside of the grid either with the other car potentially blocking.
They used the slide to take the lead off the race
The other two started braking for the turn while he just kept it floored for 1sec longer then whipped that bitch 180 and used the bank to brake then accelerate him
watched the video, kept the lead until they split off and gained a 10 second lead and wins
this maneuver was right off the start too
[Race ](https://youtu.be/F4NgRD84FCc)
It seems as though they can do one shortcut lap per race. He did his 1st and the follower did his last. He got the 10 second gap from the shortcut lap. Still won, but by less than a second, after follower caught up almost all the time through their shortcut lap
Close it's an all electric Rallycross class so instead of taking a short cut, he didn't take the Joker lap at the same (mandatory section you take once per race that is an extended layout of the track). He was able to just gain that much of a lead when he does take the Joker he keeps position.
Glad some people realized the true hero there. Chasing cars with FPV drones may be easy, but flying that good to let it look like this takes a lot of practice.
I think it's a game or something. The lighting on the top of the cars doesn't quite look right and In the second turn I noticed there's no dust coming from the front tires.
Honestly the first turn doesn't make sense to me. The dude that took the wide turn and the one that took the tightest turn are both essentially at the same speed coming out of the turn.. Why did the one guy's card take off like a rocket as opposed to the inside guy.
People are saying it's because he went into the turn faster, but that doesn't make sense to me, If you're leaving to turn at the same speed.
Also, If this was a viable method, would not all professional racers do this?
Crazy huh? Google FPV Drone. These are drones that transmit the camera view to goggles similar to the VR ones, but with less field of view. However you can do crazy things with FPV drones in "acro mode". The pros fly with a GoPro that is mounted on the drone for even more cinematic footage in 4k or 5,3k.

Why do you say that? 7-8 seconds full throttle in a rallycross car on a downslope…100 wouldn’t surprise me at all.
After doing some pausing of the video before the turn, it looks like it’s moving about 8-10 car lengths per second. That’s 120-150ft/s = 80-102mph. It’s in the range of 102. In the racing world, in a low 2k #s car with a highly modified turbo awd powertrain that’s really not that absurd. Maybe they braked some before initiating the slide, but the peak speed before turnin would have been well over highway speed limits
Normally, the handbrake wouldn't be used on a turn like this.
The normal strategy would be to go for the inside line, hit the brakes at the correct point, downshift, work the brake and throttle to maintain revs, then once you're through the apex of the corner you throttle down and upshift on out.
This guy decided on some super late, extra heavy braking technique. Which doesn't always pay off. He went way wide and sideways. Which again could have all gone wrong easily. The handbrake locks up the rear wheels, meaning with hard turning and handbrake, you lose traction at the rear and rely on momentum pulling you through sideways. Handbrake drifting like this is how people get front wheel drive cars to do a pseudo drift.
But because he nailed it dead on, came out of the slide facing the right way, he could just downshift, power forward, upshift, and out. Cutting off the inside line from the outside. The late braking giving him that extra momentum to pass at the beginning of the corner. It looks sloppy, but it's a clean pass. And I don't think you'd be able to complete a similar move on tarmac. Only the dirt or a rainy track would be slippy enough to get it just right.
Yeah, it’s like laterals in the snow because it’s madness on the field.
this is also just an epic example of a “skandi flick”, where you enter your turn early, sliding your weight early, and pointing straight in your exit direction. It doesn’t work on all surfaces, but in the right circumstances, it’s a goated strategy.
Rally is the most entertaining car type to race. Rallycross makes the competition more exiting.
Drone footage shows it of beautifully.
Next step in probably immersive 3D streaming
…. See, every time I hit the Go-Kart track with the boys I’ll race them into the main bend and execute what I perceive as the Go-Kart equivalent to the fuck you, power-slide, meep meep, yibbada yibadda “check you later fellas”….
Yet there’s always one or two who call my bluff and proceed to Ice-Man me up the inside on account of their clinical racing lines and Italian heritage.
I thought this was a video game at first… till it dawned on me that several thousand blokes probably wouldn’t have gotten out of bed to give an updoot to some dude pulling a hand-breaky in some racing game.
Not several thousand Redditors anyway.

You're not gonna fuckin believe this, but there's an entire sport called "rally", and people do this at way more than 102 mph whilst also dodging trees.
I remember in my old trackdriving days when I had a dedicated driftcar and the first time i chucked my car sideways at the end of the long straight on one of the tracks i used to drive on. I chucked/flicked it out at 170km/h and in reality it probably was more 150km/h but it really made my butthole pucker up. That was on tarmac with a car that was made for going sideways so doing that on gravel with low grip and a very very expensive car must really fuck with your mind the first couple of times.
This is the same guy who did a [multi-car overtake while drifting the opening turn of a race](https://youtu.be/vzXJwiWsvNE). Man likes going sideways fast
This reminds me of a video game I played like in 2015? I think it was a mobile game? Top down camera view and lots of drifting. I might be way off in the year though.
How do they handle the drone filming?
High performance drones usually only have about a 10-20 minute battery life. I just assume they have a bunch of pilots and drones ready to tag in when the one filming runs low on power.
i was bored and did a bit of research.
The key difference in those cars that they are electric. While his move is straight up dumb in petrol, or even hybrid car, in electric one he essentionally minimize the ev worst part, which is weight and maximize the ev best part - acceleration.
So cudos for him not just for driving good, but also driving smart.
to be fair the middle car off the start was behind immediately and his car seemed to pull on the other two hard before they even got to the braking zone.
Just want to ask genuine question, I’m new driver and know less about cars. Wouldn’t that destroy the handbrake? Or are their handbrakes different from normal cars lol.
As impressive as the first corner was, it’s not exactly racing if your blocking the whole racing line into every corner. How was the second driver supposed to pass.
*To keep the lead.
Seems like the other 2 were deliberately slower to take the turn normally. On the other hand the mc driver could go full gas for longer bcs of this manoeuvre slowing them down enough
> mc driver Is that like a McDouble or like M.C. Driver dropping the fat beats?
LMAO didnt know how to say the driver the video was about, so I made them the main character
Ooooh Main Character I was way off
I like mcdouble driver better though
To be fair, with skill like that, homie is definitely the protagonist
They caught up to him on the turns too, but you know what they say (if he won). Winning's winning.
But he had the lead when he hit his hand brake, that is the point the other person was saying.
it was right at the start of the race so gaining the lead is accurate
No, they already had the lead while performing the maneuver. Thus, it was keeping the lead. It's not that difficult to understand.
They had the lead specifically because they pulled the maneuver. This is the start of the race. The other two cars don't take off/accelerate to as high a speed because they aren't planning on pulling such a stunt and need to be at a low speed to take their turn. I don't think you know much about racing.
Sir, I have a phd in Reddit and I’m now a stock owner. I know much about everything.
Having the lead means you're ahead, which the driver had before "pulling the handbrake". I don't know what magical definition you're trying to create.
Dude. Taking a lead means going from X place to first place. He was leading the race when he did the move. Wth are you even trying to argue here
The title doesn't state "maneuver", it states "pulling handbrake". That doesn't happen until they already have the lead.
Video seems to end immediately before the guy who refrained from pulling that stunt three times in a row unceremoniously overtakes him.
