In the article he claims it’s not snow he’s allergic to, he just got hives the one time he did an ice bath.
I’m not that type of doctor, so please don’t ask me how this works, it’s just something clarified in the article.
> "I can be in the snow and all that," he said. "It's always been a dream of mine to play in the snow. I'm not afraid of the cold. I'm not afraid of cold water. I think it's just a one-time thing, honestly, well not a one-time thing clearly but I feel like the temperature had to be just right for me to sit there for that long. But I'm not worried about being in the cold at all, honestly."
This sounds more like cold urticaria "cold hives" honestly, although I could be way off base. I have it too, and its only happened a few times. It's super odd but not anything too strange. Hives go away shortly after.
Sounds like what I have...
Rapid changes in temperature cause a break out in hives for myself. Typically happens during winter going from the cold to the heat or vice versa.
Have grown out of it for the most part, used to happen daily. Doctor advised its not dangerous past being itchy.
> "I heard about that," Packers vice president of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan said of Monk's allergy. "Not a concern for us. There's probably some humor in that, but let's just make sure he doesn't go ice fishing."
from listening to the phone interview with him it happened the 1st time he took a ice bath before a game so I doubt just cold rain or snow would do much.
although i do understand its funnier to imagine him melting in the snow like the wicked witch
Having read nothing about it, is this a self proclaimed allergy? Ice baths send all the blood to your core and heart to protect yourself. I can't help but wonder a heavy set o lineman would be well off doing this
"Management largely consists of avoiding exposures that could trigger a reaction and taking medicine to manage the reaction. The best treatment for this allergy is avoiding exposure to cold temperatures."
Lol. Green Bay, Wisconsin.
I don't know how severe his is, but I have had mine my whole life, and while it sucks ass, taking anti histamines removes the welts and severe itching (it feels like you want to claw your skin off), like a million tiny needles tingling your body were you got cold
Mine is this [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dermatographic\_urticaria](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dermatographic_urticaria)
If I don't take anti histamines cold water, air conditioner on me or anyhting causes me to break out in hives. Also any trauma to the skin like a scratch causes localized swelling. Coughing hard can cause my throat to tighten up a bit.
Im sure he has the same thing, but it can be worse than mine, I simply break out in welts and they are incredibly itchy. But cold water, fast temperature change also causes it
There’s no way he hasn’t played or practiced in wet cold rain weather at some point in his football career. Or like, been exposed to cold wet rainy weather in general, right?
Apparently he doesn't have issue with that, but I have the same thing and yes, wind blowing, any cold air touching my skin will cause me to break out. Anti histamines solve 90% of the problem though, and the itching is almost 0 with no swelling
Dude I have it, ive been through the gauntlet of meds. Any anti histamine solves my problem, but some have worse side effects so I recommend trying them all and seeing which causes none.
Zyrtec caused ADHD like symptoms for me
Allegra caused severe leg pain (that I didn't realize was that for 2 years)
I just use generic Claritin non drowsy now, and I take 2 pills every 4 days (for me)
Try some, it improved my quality of life immensely
So I was in college, and I started zyrtec mid freshman year, as it had gone off prescription requirement shortly before and I figured I might as well try it. I didn't associate any problems with it at first, I felt great not itching anymore (I took it daily). Two months in I noticed I just couldn't pay attention in class, I felt jittery in lectures and my mind wandered all day (and I probably do have a bit of ADHD anyway) my grades were dropping.
I just figured it was me adjusting to college and burning out. Randomly one day I kept saying "man what changed recently" and when I was going through it I realized I started taking zyrtec. I figured that could never be related.
But if you look at the rare side effects:
**Frequency not reported**: Nervousness, impaired concentration, confusion, decreased libido, abnormal thinking, anxiety, depersonalization, emotional lability, euphoria, paroniria, sleep disorder
I stopped it and my grades improved, whether that was due to the pill or placebo, who knows?
Hey I have this!...it sucks super hard, its related to quick temperature change for me. My skin itches like crazy afterwards, anti histamines cover around 90% of the issue though
Cold urticaria here as well. I take one Zyrtec daily, and double it if I’m swimming. I’ve found it works really well. Or, I’ve had it for 30 years and it just doesn’t affect me as much now. But yeah, sucks - getting out of a pool covered in hives and ppl looking at you like you have the plague.
Yeah luckily I found that my anti histamines work for like 2-3 days with minimal reactions or itching, but after around 4-5 they come back. I try to take 2 every 4 days just because I don't need them everyday, and I had some bad side effects from zyrtec and allegra.
But thankfully I barely even notice anything anymore when taking them. But after a few days I feel like small itching spots that happen for like 10 seconds and go away
I grew up playing a lot of ice hockey, and after when I would come home would just be completely hive ridden back in the day
It just makes zero sense- the article says he discovered right before his first college game. That was your first experience with cold water? An allergy is an immune reaction- like my dude your immune system was not triggered by water, you didn’t get hives from this. lol. Are you going to have anaphylaxis from ice in your drink?
The only thing I can think of even remotely close to this is-
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_autoimmune_hemolytic_anemia
Apparently it is a thing, but to cold temperatures rather than cold water specifically.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_urticaria
He just realised that he had it from an ice bath before a game.
Probably not ideal for a Packers player but maybe antihistamines will be enough for those cold games or playing not being something as extreme as a cold bath doesn't trigger it.
People use "allergy" as an all purpose word for anything that causes a negative physical reaction.
>"I got in the cold tub and found out I was allergic to water -- not allergic to water -- allergic to cold water," Monk said Saturday. "I ended up getting some hives before the game, before we flew out. Yeah, that was something to learn, I guess."
It doesn't sound like he even knows what happened. He sat in cold water (why?) and got hives. Who knows why? It might have nothing to do with the water. Maybe he ate some shrimp cocktail or something.
This happened to me as a child on a particularly hot summer night.
I turned on the AC in my room full blast, a few minutes later hives all over my body.
It's never happened since even though I've been in very similar situations and a bunch of cold ass water lol
yeah it would be impossible for him to be alive if he has an actual allergy to cold water. He must have some skin condition that gets aggravated by cold temperatures.
I didn't learn what it was until I was around 15-16, but now I take anti histamines and I barely have any problem with it.
But anything cold on my skin causes it, its a reaction from your mast cells. But growing up, air conditioning, jumping in a cold pool, sweating with wind, all sucks. It happens from fast temperature change for me, but especially cold
It is super cool how amazing our bodies are and yet still how weird they are and how little we actually know about them.
Some people are allergic to water. Sun Light and more.
Did he grow up with Asian parents? Because my in-laws insist if I let my daughter drink anything with ice she will get horribly sick. Some crazy folks out there.
I have cold urticaria. It’s not a huge deal unless you get immersed, but in cold weather I do swell up (ears, hands, fatty part of my nose that isn’t cartilage…)
I also have it with foods, but you can avoid cold foods/drinks super easy.
Good thing it doesn’t snow at Lambeau
In the article he claims it’s not snow he’s allergic to, he just got hives the one time he did an ice bath. Why didn’t he consult a doctor about this? Just seems like he isn’t even sure about his condition.
In his defense doctors are expensive.
This sounds more like cold urticaria "cold hives" honestly, although I could be way off base. I have it too, and its only happened a few times. It's super odd but not anything too strange. Hives go away shortly after.
Me too. Just for external, or foods too? (I got both 🫤)
Sounds like what I have... Rapid changes in temperature cause a break out in hives for myself. Typically happens during winter going from the cold to the heat or vice versa. Have grown out of it for the most part, used to happen daily. Doctor advised its not dangerous past being itchy.
Pretty sure there would be sleet/freezing rain.

December home game: OUT - 90% of snow (Allergy)
…unless you have extremely hot piss
Mfer is allergic to ice 💀
When they pick up the cooler for the Gatorade shower, his eyes get real big
Opposing DL need to keep a mouthful of ice and spit it on him mid play.
> "I heard about that," Packers vice president of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan said of Monk's allergy. "Not a concern for us. There's probably some humor in that, but let's just make sure he doesn't go ice fishing."
Small town Wisconsin quotes nothing to see here
But if he doesn't go ice fishing where is he going to find some hookers?
First Team All inflammation
Set to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Anaphylaxis
Packers draft a player who literally grows in bad weather conditions, seems unfair
Lol that would have been perfect for his r/nfl draft card fact :(
I was going to say, did someone misunderstand the Reddit facts and report it?
from listening to the phone interview with him it happened the 1st time he took a ice bath before a game so I doubt just cold rain or snow would do much. although i do understand its funnier to imagine him melting in the snow like the wicked witch

TBF he said himself that cold & snow wasn't an issue, just something about the long ice bath was the trigger.
🤷♂️
I don't know how severe his is, but I have had mine my whole life, and while it sucks ass, taking anti histamines removes the welts and severe itching (it feels like you want to claw your skin off), like a million tiny needles tingling your body were you got cold

don't know they never talked about medical diagnosis of it, all he said was he thinks he took too long in the bath and broke out in hives.
Snow is quite cold water
He’s Bruce Willis in Unbreakable.
Or one of those aliens from Signs - M. Night has a hatred of water
So...what happens when you sweat and the cold wind blows?
Nothing. He only has problems when he bathes in cold water.
strange
No, he's in New England
What about rain games?
There’s no way he hasn’t played or practiced in wet cold rain weather at some point in his football career. Or like, been exposed to cold wet rainy weather in general, right?
Lil Wayne’s verse just ended
Apparently he doesn't have issue with that, but I have the same thing and yes, wind blowing, any cold air touching my skin will cause me to break out. Anti histamines solve 90% of the problem though, and the itching is almost 0 with no swelling
Ah damn, sorry you have to deal with that. Must suck
Cold Ulticaria. My son has this as well. Any part of his body exposed to cold water or air immediately hives. Too bad for the guy in Wisconsin.
Thank you for sharing something relevant instead all the people just saying "no, he's wrong about his own body."
My pleasure

My kid just deals with it. Luckily the hives don’t itch.
Can you tell me more about how you figured out the Zyrtec side effects?
So I was in college, and I started zyrtec mid freshman year, as it had gone off prescription requirement shortly before and I figured I might as well try it. I didn't associate any problems with it at first, I felt great not itching anymore (I took it daily). I don’t think it’s all that rare, I know several people who have this I sometimes break out in hives when I get cold, but it’s not very consistent
GB is literally gonna have a pot of boiling water for this man on the sideline when winter starts in Wisconsin😂
Hey I have this!...it sucks super hard, its related to quick temperature change for me. My skin itches like crazy afterwards, anti histamines cover around 90% of the issue though

What? Honestly, im not sure this makes any sense.
And you guys thought it was a problem when Bakh didn't want to play on turf. Now you might have a guy that can't play in snow?
It just makes zero sense- the article says he discovered right before his first college game. That was your first experience with cold water? I have it, it sucks. Ive been responding through this whole thread so I am repeating myself like crazy but anti histamines solve it
This is like the aliens from Signs. How does he go outside?
I didn't learn what it was until I was around 15-16, but now I take anti histamines and I barely have any problem with it. But anything cold on my skin causes it, its a reaction from your mast cells. He will never know the pure bliss of drinking an ice cold glass of water at 3 am when you wake up parched.
He could, at a cost
This is my favorite joke about having cold urticaria: Do you want any ice cream? Me: Is it to die for? 🫠
Probably worth it tbh
I would literally die, that’s like 90% of what I drink
Ranma?
That was my thought as well. "No guys, I'm just allergic. Don't let me get near any cold water."
Good thing they don’t play outdoors.
That must be hell Jesus
It is super cool how amazing our bodies are and yet still how weird they are and how little we actually know about them. Some people are allergic to water. Sun Light and more.
Keep him away from the Ashwaubomay
Is allergic the right word here?
Yes. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_urticaria
I also get goosebumps
I’m guessing he was not a fan of that ice bucket fad a few years back.
Did he grow up with Asian parents? Because my in-laws insist if I let my daughter drink anything with ice she will get horribly sick. Some crazy folks out there.
I would rather die than not be able to drink cold water
That’s extremely unfortunate! How does this guy deal with this
I have cold urticaria. It’s not a huge deal unless you get immersed, but in cold weather I do swell up (ears, hands, fatty part of my nose that isn’t cartilage…) I also have it with foods, but you can avoid cold foods/drinks super easy.
Um... ok.................
He'll fit right in with the rest of the stinkies up in Green Bay
So......he's getting benched every rain game? LMAO great pick, great pick! 🤣
