How many pallets you reckon? Just looked up the price they are between £5 and £15 pounds each.
So let's say a fiver each pallet on average.
Estimations? 😄
Edit: hacker news put the 2021 Larne bonfire ar 17,000 pallets.
That's an £85,000 bonfire right there. Minus the Labour 😅
Don't they put plenty of green on the thing before they set it alight anyway?
I assume tricolour pallets would be grabbed preferentially, if they existed.
I had an Uncle who was very republican who ran a pallet company up until about 2005. He told me every July the lads came looking pallets and it was basically hand over a lorry load of them or else.
That's why I stated that I was a foreigner, until a couple of hours ago I had no idea what this was and didn't realize what these pelple were up to, but after having read the wikipedia article, watching a youtube video from vice and reading a online newspaper article, Im relatively informed
It's all a bit silly, innit?
Nah, but for real, I think it's sad and pathetic that they turned an innocent ritual like the midsummer fire into what is most often a grand display of hatred and basically calling for genocide ("Kill all Taigs"). Simultaneously poluting by burning treated wood, often stealing to gather the pallets, creating fire hazards that can hit people and buildings and just intimidating (or at least trying to) the catholics/nationalists.
Now, I originally wrote another paragraph, but I deleted it, because I think it's best to end here, as it seems to me that the situation between nationalists/catholics and loyalists/protestants is quite complicated for the most part and I don't wanna comment too much on something I don't fully understand.
I've seen the occasional news story where they get it moved. Often if it's near houses they'll board up the houses and move the people away for a few days.
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ireland-40567287
curious outsider questions...
How the hell do these fires not cause damage to the nearby homes?
How close can one stand and observe a fire this size? Are roads closed?
How much hassle or hazard does the resulting smoke cause to the surrounding communities?
Lastly, how many a year are injured in the building and burning of these ridiculous things?
If you want a genuine answers on this bonfire specifically.
1. The closest houses board up windows to play safe however none have ever caught fire in my lifetime, fire department is on standby and occasionally waters the roofs of nearest buildings.
2. A lot closer than you'd think, think around 1/3 of a football pitch away and it's taped around so you can't get closer. Roads are not closed however thankfully in recent years it's turned into a family event and removed all effigies and flags so every community is welcome to join so only the main road closed to allow for entertainment and emergency vehicles (bumper cars, fun fairs, food stands, and a live DJ street party near the end) however you used to be able to drive by
3. In my lifetime there hasn't been any hassle or hazard as a result of smoke itself or at least none that I've ever heard from locals
4. None on building this one specifically that I'm aware of as they use cranes and harnesses when building, however a builder did get minor burn injures 5+ years back when lighting it.
Pretty sure a fella died falling from a bonfire in Larne in 2022. Wasn't this one -- think it was the Antiville one. Still shocks me that it doesn't happen more often when you see the size of these things.
There’s no hassle because they’re giant symbols to those of a different cultural persuasion to stay away. Nothing keeps the neighbours in their place like a hate fire with the words ‘kill all Catholics’ written on the side of it
Genuine question. Are there any hardcore loyalist environmentalists willing to speak up.
Where do you stand on this sort of stuff?
Do you compromise your loyalism for environmental reasons? Or compromise your environmental principles for your loyalism?
Can't get my head around why? Literally everybody on the planet could do it but don't because it's so stupid and dangerous and Literally destroys where you live. Don't like using the word but nothing else fits the bill like retarded
Imagine if, instead of a pallet tower, they would build a 4 floor block. Each year, from citizen money. It could house the homeless, people in abusive relationships leaving the household, social cases etc. In time, as more blocks would go up, some could even be sold to private owners, thus lowering the requirement for housing. It doesn't have to be 1000 blocks, just 1-2 per year. At 4 floors with like 10 apartments per floor, that's 40 apartments, say 1-2 people per each, that's 60-80 people off the streets yearly. Out of donations.
They need to release extra toxins into the surrounding area once a year to make sure they can kill off any brain cells that might lead someone to believe maybe they should do something more productive with their lives
Every year it gets more and more phallic...
*Not that there's a anything wrong with that*, love a good phallus myself.
William of Orange himself would be proud, I think.
“If the paramilitaries own the bonfire, then they own the community. And when they own the community, they control the sale of drugs."
https://m.sundayworld.com/news/irish-news/loyalist-behind-worlds-largest-bonfire-bid-says-group-have-already-spent-33k-on-pallets/a1683747406.html
These people make Northern Ireland a thoroughly depressing country. The whole world looks at this and sees nothing but environmental damage and a waste of perfectly good pallets. All these degenerates see is Kulture and Flegs. Imagine if they put their time and effort into something constructive instead.
I moved to NI on July 10th having not physically been to view the house I was moving into, turned the corner on moving day to see one of these looming over me and wondered what the fuck I'd done.
Loved the place though.
I say this every year, but try building something on your own property even though its safe but has no planning and the authorities will show no leniency. Yet this health and safety abomination, yea work away lads and don't worry about cleaning it up we'll have the council.guys round in the morning yous just sleep off your hangovers
It’s that wonderful time of year when the bonfire builders come out of hibernation 😂😂😂 nearly pissed myself when I heard that term coined!!!
Cannot believe such fire are still allowed happen. Only in the North you could do that. Nevermind burning tricolours and poster etc. just building that alone. No way you would be let. Never mind burning it.
Actually if I rang up a crane company and asked to hire one to build it, they would tell me the jog on.😂
I'm curious to see as an Australian if this year's edition of hatred will be aimed at your own, or towards Ivory coast? Or maybe India will get a special mention this year?!
I honestly wouldn't care how much they cost, how big they are, who builds them etc etc
IF they weren't sending a mountain of dust, smoke and crap into the good country air
Pallet builder A visits the GP a few years later "lung cancer is it? Sure I never smoked in ma life"
Kids in Liverpool on bonfire night build a small bonfire then the police and fire service turn up and put it out. How are these fucking idiots allowed to build this? It is obscene.

Too rich for my pallet
They certainly didn't pay for them the robbing wee ....
The blue pallets are leased, they're all owned by the company Chep. Every last one is stolen.
Well they shoulda painted em green. Their own fault really.
Billy, thems fenian pallets wtf did you bring them for. Go get the blue and red wans
"Fenian pallets" killed me there 🤣
Don't they put plenty of green on the thing before they set it alight anyway? I assume tricolour pallets would be grabbed preferentially, if they existed.
Maybe they should be orange.
Then again, they have to be replaced so maybe keeping them blue is better for business.
Yeah and chep pallets probably worth more than 15 quid
Think they’re around £25 each at the minute
I had an Uncle who was very republican who ran a pallet company up until about 2005. He told me every July the lads came looking pallets and it was basically hand over a lorry load of them or else.
Sounds about the size of it. A lovely bunch of lads id imagine.
Like they just stole them? (Im a foreigner so Im out of the loop regarding this matter)
They'd threaten and intimidate him into giving them the pallets. They're all stolen.
Man, what a bunch of dickbags
Why would they pay when they can steal? You think this is a friendly cross community event run by the nicest possible people?
That's why I stated that I was a foreigner, until a couple of hours ago I had no idea what this was and didn't realize what these pelple were up to, but after having read the wikipedia article, watching a youtube video from vice and reading a online newspaper article, Im relatively informed
Fair play on the research! "What a bunch of dickbags," your first take, was fairly spot on, but care to share your thoughts now?
It's all a bit silly, innit? Nah, but for real, I think it's sad and pathetic that they turned an innocent ritual like the midsummer fire into what is most often a grand display of hatred and basically calling for genocide ("Kill all Taigs"). The councils allowing this?
Not only are they allowing it but they are giving money to the local terrorist representatives to try to stop them doing illegal things
Them cowards would think twice about saying something, the gobshites are probably helping them!
I've seen the occasional news story where they get it moved. Often if it's near houses they'll board up the houses and move the people away for a few days. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ireland-40567287
That is fuckin mental, all stolen as well.
No matter what numbers I punch into the calculator it always equals 1690
Come on down to Pallet ~~Paddy's~~ Paul's, we've got all your burning desires in one place!
Hey look being a pathetic loyalist isn’t cheap

1. yes 2. stay away 3.a lot, and damage to taxpayer money 4. not enough to deter them

Thinking about the time, money and effort that could go into making NI a better place spent on giant fires.
Loyalists:But if NI was made a better place the Fenians would also benefit.
And here’s me worrying about the 1g of carbon it costs to send an email.

Genuine question. Are there any hardcore loyalist environmentalists willing to speak up. Where do you stand on this sort of stuff? Do you compromise your loyalism for environmental reasons? Or compromise your environmental principles for your loyalism?
>Are there any hardcore loyalist environmentalists Lmao are there fuck
"hardcore loyalist environmentalist" is the funniest fucking thing I've read today, well done 👍
I would like that to be added as a flair on this sub lol
They don't even believe in evolution.
Respect, hardcore loyalist environmentalists. Be seen, wear Green kinda thing?
That made me laugh more than it should have.
Remember. This is just ONE. Fucking mongs wrecking the place. Fuck me just make it like a World Cup or something. Every 4 years. …
AAAAAGGGHHHH!!! FUCK YOU!! AND FUCK DA CATLICKS!!!! AAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHH!!!! FOIA!!!!
Can't get my head around why? Literally everybody on the planet could do it but don't because it's so stupid and dangerous and Literally destroys where you live. Don't like using the word but nothing else fits the bill like retarded

build that, and then set it on fire?
It could have gas heating, so you'd have your own mini-fire that you can light whenever you want inside.
Well, yeah, they're cafflic homeless
You want to burn the homeless?
Built with bigotry
The environmental carbon impact of these bonfires must be measured- that and the lung capacity of the attendees
brain capacity
This is triggering my fear of heights.
A lovely big spectacle of hatred
All those stolen Chep pallets. Thousands of pounds worth of stolen goods, and it's normal.
Chep should should paint the union jack on their pallets, then the loyalists wouldn't burn them.
Looks like a sidequest in ratchet n clank
Got a good chuckle out of that, nice one 😂
Imagine they put this amount of effort in to something productive.
Knuckle draggers
If only they made the same effort building bridges.
Or furthering their education. Pfffff
A bit daft, isn't it?
It's amazing to me that this is literally the most and only organised thing NI can do.
This is exactly like when i fall off a cliff in a dream
This is way too relatable...! 🤣 I'm defo going to be having that recurring dream again tonight 😭
Such an unbelievable waste of materials, not to mention the toxicity of it.
They need to release extra toxins into the surrounding area once a year to make sure they can kill off any brain cells that might lead someone to believe maybe they should do something more productive with their lives
Times how many bonfires. It needs to be banned or replaced with something else
Councils should be putting a stop to this madness.
Imagine if they put just 5% as much effort into their actual fucking lives.
As a former factory worker, makes me a little sad to see all those pallets sacrificed.
Every year it gets more and more phallic... *Not that there's a anything wrong with that*, love a good phallus myself. William of Orange himself would be proud, I think.
I read Billy's was like a little button mushroom
Seriously though having this as a culture is just sad
Totally
So that is where all the missing CHEP pallets are.
And the LPR pallets
Good thing I switched to reusable bags so shit like this can take place
The Annual Ulster Space Rocket never takes off
Are there any environmental laws?
“If the paramilitaries own the bonfire, then they own the community. And when they own the community, they control the sale of drugs." https://m.sundayworld.com/news/irish-news/loyalist-behind-worlds-largest-bonfire-bid-says-group-have-already-spent-33k-on-pallets/a1683747406.html
Aww bet you feel right tall on the top of that. All that effort and London still doesn’t give two sh-ts about you 😂😂
They don't even know the bonfires exist.
Cringe
Would have been much nicer as Trees
What a waste of good wood that could be reused.
they were likely being used, before they were stolen, i mean theyre pallets like.
Don’t know why this popped into my feed. Maybe propaganda to guarantee I never visit Northern Ireland ever
There's good parts and bad, just like anywhere, our 5% of lunatics are loud.
I’m sure you’re right there. I only know one person from NI and he’s an absolute diamond and speaks highly of his home town.
Everything that’s fucked up about NI perfectly encapsulated in a 37 second video clip.
I could not work on that my legs would be jelly
Dw most of these idiots don’t work
Wonder how many of the builders are down the doctors every three months for a sick line to keep their dole/dla claims going 😂
Chep aren’t going to be happy
These people make Northern Ireland a thoroughly depressing country. The whole world looks at this and sees nothing but environmental damage and a waste of perfectly good pallets. All these degenerates see is Kulture and Flegs. Imagine if they put their time and effort into something constructive instead.
‘If they’d brains they wouldn’t be dangerous ‘
Is CJ Auditing there to check the health and safety?
The literal height of stupidity.
as a catholic living around the corner, ugh
A literal pile of bigoted terrorist crap.
I moved to NI on July 10th having not physically been to view the house I was moving into, turned the corner on moving day to see one of these looming over me and wondered what the fuck I'd done. Loved the place though.
If I moved into an area and seen one of these every year, I would be genuinely concerned
A long way to find some brains about there too
I say this every year, but try building something on your own property even though its safe but has no planning and the authorities will show no leniency. Yet this health and safety abomination, yea work away lads and don't worry about cleaning it up we'll have the council.guys round in the morning yous just sleep off your hangovers
The smoke pollution will be great. 🫡
What an absolute eyesore.
It is Larne
The ultimate community carcinogenic accelerator.
All this to get burned...
I hope another complete and utter spastic doesn’t fall off it and die again this year.
What a fucking waste of time and wood
Stupid arseholes.
Where's a strong wind when you need one...
Possibly a stupid question but how do they get up and down from the top during building?
A crane or one of those construction lifts. If you turn the sound on, you can hear it
Catapult.
*Twatapult
Not a long way down at all. You are right at the bottom.
So where does Edward Woodward go?
Idiots at it again
There’s a lot of treated wood on that pile. Lots of chemicals burning…
Fucking pathetic nutters.
While you planks build fires the rest of us are in university
Economically inactive people building a structure which will cost the economy millions in policing. Probably not the best use of our resources
What's the pallets sticking out for? Anyone willing to stand on top of that and work away without a safety harness is stupid
Theyre sticking out for anyone climbing it with a harness at that height to have a rest and to find their bearings.
I believe they're for a wee break on your way up or down, so the whole time isn't spent climbing. Health and safety and all that.
It’s that wonderful time of year when the bonfire builders come out of hibernation 😂😂😂 nearly pissed myself when I heard that term coined!!! Cannot believe such fire are still allowed happen. Literally don’t get this… contributes nothing, tens of thousands up in flames
As an English person I find this bullshit draconian, embarrassing, pathetic, and a waste of tax payers money. Talk about living in the past…
I'm curious to see as an Australian if this year's edition of hatred will be aimed at your own, or towards Ivory coast? Or maybe India will get a special mention this year?!
how very backward.
Fkn state of this. A big bigot bonfire. Nothing to celebrate here.

Saddos. Pollution. Celebrating William of Orange. 90% of them couldn’t point out where he came from on a map.
I've seen so many oblivious to the fact he was **Dutch** and not **British**
Would be a terrible place to have a fall… “Don’t play with fire” n all that
Bit silly when everything points to a unified Ireland in the future.
Small dick energy, they’re compensating for something
More lack of brains than cock skin. Just fucking idiots and nothing more. What can ya do.
Frigg I could get a fortune for those pallets.
Widden Pallets
Do a flip
"a bonfire" 🤔
And here I am using a pallet to build a bug hotel for the garden with my four year old.
Upcyclers in tears!
That’s not a bonfire!! That’s a signal fire for the moon!!
Wow! 😲
Lookin forward to seeing more flaming human torches this year.
Do us all a favor and jump.
Regardless of my opinions on bonfires that's fuckin impressive
A yeah the overcompensater
I honestly wouldn't care how much they cost, how big they are, who builds them etc etc IF they weren't sending a mountain of dust, smoke and crap into the good country air Pallet builder A visits the GP a few years later "lung cancer is it? Sure I never smoked in ma life"

Fuck culture.
To think this shits still going on in this day and age, no wonder the world thinks the countries backwards
Pathetic use of time and money
>it's a long way down You couldn't get any lower, kid
Scum
Mental. Just......mental.
Reminds me of Gandalf trapped in Saraumans tower, know which one I would rather be on
How early in the year do these pallets start "going missing" ?
Do a flip!
Them pallets be toxic af when burnt 🤮
It’s like the Tower of Babel, but for dumb cunts.
