Rt. 1 hasn’t been a viable alternative since the advent of Google Maps.

_stoned_chipmunk_

Why is traffic so terrible on this stretch of RT1? Every day it backs up.

Jewbe123

Because you have everyone trying to get on 95 where it bottlenecks from 4 lanes to 3 back to 4 with traffic coming from lorton, and both directions of 123

Apprehensive-Type874

The stoplights, especially the two close together at the top of this hill. We could solve this with traffic circles, but no for some reason.

_stoned_chipmunk_

That light by the gas station really does back things up. They should make an overpass or traffic circle for real.

PaintDrinkingPete

I mean, I support traffic circles in general, but not sure it wouldn't present it's own problems in an intersection with that much traffic though? Having an overpass and avoiding an at-grade intersection there would probably work better, IMO.

fragileblink

Overpass.

Brawldud

it's all the cars, too many people keep driving on it.

DutertesNemesis

Tens of thousands of people all trying to squeeze from a 4 lane road to the rightmost lane to get onto the Woodrow Wilson Bridge eastbound

kayl_breinhar

I-95 is always faster unless all thru lanes are 100% blocked. What they NEED are emergency on-ramps onto the Express lanes for those "just in case" situations which turn off the tolls once they're open/raised. Another thing that would be very welcome on the stretch of I-95 where people got stranded in the winter would be a travel plaza. Long stretches of interstate without exits are hazardous.

Elastic_Peanut

if u live near port Potomac or eagle pointe you’re just fucked bro at 5 pm everyday

davekva

That's because PWC keeps approving a shit ton of housing, but does nothing to improve the roads around these gigantic new neighborhoods. Port Potomac, Potomac Shores, and Eagle Pointe together are probably 4000+ homes, and getting to any of those houses requires driving on Route 1. Route 1 has barely been upgraded since those homes were built, and was not designed to handle that much traffic. 234 between Rt 1 and I-95 has also become a giant clusterfuck every afternoon, as more people have started going south to that exit instead of getting off at Dale Blvd. The fact that they were considering putting an NFL stadium in that area is mind blowing. I have no idea how that would've worked.

Unfair-Tailor-3854

I felt fu*ked until I got a remote job. It takes a good 20-30 minutes to drive from Dale blvd to port Potomac ave, just a 1.5 mile stretch.

Elastic_Peanut

I wish man, I work near p mills and it’s a rough 30-50 mins back home everyday at 5

RaineMtn

I have a i95 bypass but I can’t share because if I do, it would ruined 😏

Apprehensive-Type874

If it’s the back road under that one lane bridge it’s no faster than sitting in this traffic. I’ve obsessively timed every method.

RaineMtn

Through Maryland Route 210, route 228 through Waldorf, route 301 across the fun bridge, then down to Richmond avoiding ALL of the traffic because it’s enough of a eastward detour to not effect the time too much, but also too much of a detour that it makes people scared to try it out. https://preview.redd.it/0v26wpqcj59d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=55bcc87b106acce2b0658c435ba5b85bc8b2a6fe

Apprehensive-Type874

This route only works if you’re commuting from way outside the area. It’s not valid for most people in NOVA, but it is why some people choose to live in southern MD.

RaineMtn

Trur

Smoothvirus

I've known about that one for decades, and perhaps things have changed but I do remember 301 backing up for miles at that bridge so people could pay the toll, although there was a shortcut for that too. That was only in the summer though, because it was all beach traffic. Also, if you're going to Fredericksburg you're kind of stuck on 95/1.

cubgerish

Indian Head Highway has the worst timed lights I've ever seen. I swear you never actually catch a green.

RaineMtn

True. Oh well every road eastbound from the cities get clogged during beach time, there’s like no way to avoid that traffic. The beach is to Americans as Mecca is to Muslims, as soon as the 90 degree days start Americans point towards the beach lol

Octavian_202

Coming back from Va Beach next time and will use it. Last weekend I was stuck on 95 for hours, no wrecks, just left lane and middle lane driving the same speed. Hell welcomes them.

RaineMtn

Nooo I’m so sorry I’ll def fix that 😂 And I live in rose hill which is in between rose hill and Alex but I was annoyed that there was no rose hill flair but oh well.

Entertainmentguru

I've done that in the past. There is also a short cut well before 228 that takes you onto 228 eventually (Old Fort Rd to Route 223).

Jamerwilson

But it is less stressful than this craziness. And you are in the shade of the trees so it is a cooler wait.

jrunner02

At this rate, I think I-95 needs a triple bypass.

Bob-Doll

Jesus I know exactly where that is

Hta68

Only we NoVa’ners get that…

tontot

Too many lights and intersections for a “high way”. Reduce the ratio to 1/10 and build couple over passes. You have to drive longer to turn left / u turn but likely faster Businesses probably will not be happy though

tablectabled

Wtf is this real

rhin0982

Through lorton it’s always like that 😝
