I had lunch with him once, in the most random circumstances.
Every time he would talk the entire restaurant would stop and look. It was like a sense memory of being scared of his voice. For some it was snape, for some it was Hans Gruber, but everyone was affected.
I don't think the reactions were of them being scared of his voice - at least for the women 😏
He was "the voice of velvet" after all.
He could make women orgasm just by reading the phone book out loud.
Harry Potter introduced me to him.
I went on a whole journey looking for his movies and other materials. His role as Obadiah Slope was funny, it was like seeing a real young Snape. Loved him in Mesmer too. He gives such unicity to his characters, Rasputin, The sheriff, Hans.
I would have loved to find footage of him playing in Les liaisons dangereuses.
Yep I have tried to look for it years ago, couldn’t find it, i was a newbie. I am sure I can find it now. I only watched some extracts on YouTube and really wanted to watch the whole thing. I remember his costar being so moved by his death. Their chemistry seemed great.
I didn't know he had passed away. I'm a fairly recent potter head. I bawled my eyes out crying when I found out. Like 2 years ago
He reminds me of my grandma, she passed away in 2013
Fr, with how much it has been posted, this is some kind of general internet knowledge, like Australians losing wars against birds or knowing the significance of "Me at the zoo"
Nah, post something interesting, like 16-20% of daily Google queries being unique. (I don't know if this includes people rampantly mistypijg with theur fat fingws.)
The daily prophet was tabloid journalism in the wizarding world. Paparazzi in real life won’t take photos of celebrities with the same outfit Radcliffe discovered this and would wear the same outfit going out for he wouldn’t get swarmed everyday.
You do realize that Reddit hides upvotes for the first few hours after a comment is made, right? Even yours right now says nothing other than the downvote I just gave it.
Y'know, most people think they own a black robe, but if you look very carefully, you'll see they're actually a very, very, very, very, very, very, very, VERY dark blue. Now, you need a proper Slytherin robe to have a black one. Never buy black robes from Diagon Alley, they'll shaft you every time.
When you're trying to unravel the mysteries of spacetime using nothing more than your brain and a piece of chalk, you really don't want to be thinking about how itchy the tag in your new shirt is. If he'd had an even comfier outfit perhaps he could have embraced and advanced the field of quantum mechanics. "There is no spooky action at a distance because the two particles are actually one. You can see it clearly rotating around a 5th dimensional axis orthogonal to the four primary dimensions of spacetime. Here is the proof! Also, feel how soft this sweater is!"
I had a teacher like this, but he was awesome and taught chemical engineering. I went and visited him after graduation just to say hi. But yeah, ten of the same outfit like a cartoon character
I think certain super heros have pretty perfect designs. But it's good to change it eventually. Spiderman in essentially the same suit for 30 years was a lot. So they made it black. Venom would have never existed in a perfect design wasnt changed.
With Snape he doesnt change. His arc is that your perception of him changes. But the character never changes. So the costume doesn't change. I would say that Snape pre teacher, pre Potter's death, should have a different costume. I wouldnt mind if they ever showed a Ghost or Snape in heaven I wouldn't mind him in all white. Would show how his self sacrifice meant something to him and had it change him inside. Maybe change how he sees himself.
Yes I agree. Snape's character development happens before Harry is born and in the period immediately following. By the time Harry arrives at Hogwarts, Snape has already been following Dumbledore's plans for some time.
Fun fact: It was Alan Rickman himself who asked for his cuffs to come up so far on his hand. He said he wanted Snape to feel constricted in his own clothing to match his personality.
A lot of the casting in the Harry Potter movies is really on point. Whenever I read the novels I always see the actors faces and read the dialog in their specific ways of speaking. Snape in particular is absolutely perfect. I cannot imagine anyone else playing that part. Same with Lord of the Rings. Nobody but Ian McKellen comes to mind when you say Gandalf.
Oftentimes, we see costumes shift over time as characters change, but I think the argument could be made that the reason his costume never changed was that his motivations never changed. He entered and exited the story loving Lily and helping Harry - even though Harry didn't realize that until much later in the books.
I always loved his costume the most. It was the way Rickman played with it. When he threw the cape in a theatrical fashion. When he played with his cuffs before scolding ron and harry. His collar that seemed always a little too close to his neck. Awesome to know this detail about it
Severus Snape actually cosplayed as a Muggle using the name Alan Rickman. He starred in lots of movies, most notably playing Hans Gruber in Die Hard.
Change my mind.
Snape was supposed to be greasy and had a goatee. I loved Alan and think he did a good job but he definitely wasn't book snape. I hope the tv show gives us book snape.
I think he acted the part of being a mean, intimidating teacher quite well! And I found his pattern of speech while acting Snape to be pretty much spot on to what I imagined in the books.
Though I will personally say I think McGonnagals casting was the best (I probably horribly misspelled that but you know who I mean)
Idk where I got it from, but when I was first reading the books, I pictured McGonagall in her 30s-40s with glasses and jet black hair in a tight bun… so I had a problem with Maggie Smith’s casting at first, but I ended up loving it, and now I picture her when I read!
That’s the thing. Most people in HP were remarkable actors down the the goddamn Janitor who is an incredible actor. When damn near everyone delivers a stellar performance it’s hard to compete.
Snape was not supposed to have a goatee. That was Karkaroff.
JK actually wrote the part of Snape with Alan Rickman in mind. Alan didn't want the part because he didn't want to be typecast as a villain (though I think that ship had already sailed until the part of Snape).
To get Alan to play the part, she took him to dinner and revealed to him, and him only, that Snape protects Harry because he is the child of his one and only love, Lily. Nobody else in the cast and crew of the movies knew that. It's one reason, other than his natural talent, Alan played the part so well.
that's the American copies I think?
the actual text never mentions him having any facial hair at all
lots of the covers and stuff take some artistic license
I take your rebuttal into consideration but the illustration is still inaccurate, even as shown in Rowling's definite vision there is barely stubble, as someone who hasn't shaved in a day or 2. [here is a definite illustration ](https://www.reddit.com/r/harrypotter/s/grMQUoOwbV)
snape has a goatee in one of those little chapter illustrations, i think it might be the third book. he's like standing over the marauder's map or something.
I think the actor who played Kharkoroff (sp?) fit the physical description of Snape a bit better. Maybe a little more tan than Snape would have been, but nothing makeup couldn't fix.
Movie snape doesn't really resemble book shape in most ways (including behaviors), and it seems like everyone has just universally agreed to swap them out because they prefer rickmans take to Rowling's.
Book snape is a lot less cool and yells more. The subtleties Rickman brought in are replaced with cartoonish villainy
I always saw it as Snape adhering to the professor’s dress code and the rest not. Which also fits for his character. A stickler for the rules to the bitter end.
Was he a sticker for rules or did he just like to weaponize rules to hurt people he disliked? The guy is a literal criminal who was apparently delving into dark magic as a teenager.
Imagine trying to use that excuse in any other job 🤣
Sorry boss, but as the report writer I've deemed this report to be perfect and therefore I won't be changing it.
Man, I miss Alan Rickman

I love that movie!
To infinity and beyond! no, wait...
This one hurts. They were talking about doing a second one and shelved it because of Alan’s passing. May he RIP.
Well they kinda waited two decades too long.
I had lunch with him once, in the most random circumstances. Every time he would talk the entire restaurant would stop and look. It was like a sense memory of being scared of his voice. For some it was snape, for some it was Hans Gruber, but everyone was affected.
He had gravitas, his voice was one manifestation of it. His manner as well.
Behold the Metatron, herald of the Almighty and voice of the one true God!
That is so cool!
Thanks! I suddenly feel important for a few minutes today!
I don't think the reactions were of them being scared of his voice - at least for the women 😏 He was "the voice of velvet" after all. He could make women orgasm just by reading the phone book out loud.
Entirely possible. It worked on me a little Lol
I had a brainfart and just googled a bit because I was so sure he never played in Allo Allo.
He's DeValera for me
After all this time? … Always
He was handsome in a non-handsome way.
The best kind of handsome
He was awesome 😔 rest in peace
Harry Potter introduced me to him. I went on a whole journey looking for his movies and other materials. His role as Obadiah Slope was funny, it was like seeing a real young Snape. What a way to find out he died.
Ohh! Sorry my dude!

10 points for slytherin
And 10 points from Gryffindor for having different outfits.
“100 points to Gryffindor because fuck Slytherin” - Albus Dumbledore
“1000 points to Gryffindor because they’re breathing.”
Snape was trying to keep away the Daily Prophet paparazzi.
Clever comment, and I’m the only upvote. The internet is wasted on these fools Edit: I see your downvotes and I regret nothing
At least wait more than an hour.
As if this is some super secret inside joke or something lmao

Snape did seem like the kind of guy where his closet would be 10 of the same outfit.
Snape is Mark Zuckerberg confirmed
Except for when he’s feeling crazy and busts out his slightly darker black robes
Then there was one time he tried to pull off midnight blue.
The Steve Jobs fashion sense
Or Einstein. Both men picked terrible outfits considering they only wore one

We get to keep the left over budget Jany
That is true.
I kinda thought that his "jacket" became more "cape-like" in later films?
they left the outfit but said lets get some volumizer in that hair
I think it was to distract from how puffy his face had gotten.
access to youtube really changed his hair game
Just imagining Snape on the early web trying to watch hair tutorials
Fun fact: It was Alan Rickman himself who asked for his cuffs to come up so far on his hand. He said he wanted Snape to feel constricted in his own clothing to match his personality.
Progress for progress’s sake must be discouraged

What does that mean?
In book 5, Umbridge says this in a speech.
And this is Ron’s question to Hermione in response
Well done, 1 million points to Gryffindor.
This is honestly such a cool detail to me. Kind of wild, honestly.
It’s kind of a cool symbolic reference to his character.
It’s not that interesting to me. I wouldn’t expect the costumes to change. I’m more surprised that (presumably) the others did change.
Why not? They're not uniforms, they're just the characters' clothes, and people tend to change clothes, especially year to year lol.
Except they are school uniforms
A lot of the casting in the Harry Potter movies is really on point. Whenever I read the novels I always see the actors faces and read the dialog in their specific ways of speaking. Snape in particular is absolutely perfect. I cannot imagine anyone else playing that part. Same with Lord of the Rings. Nobody but Ian McKellen comes to mind when you say Gandalf.
Even Gandarf got to change his outfit through the movies.
ah yes, gandarf the shart
"Hear me out, guys... What if we gave him a black robe?"
NO CAPE!!!
It was perfect, but the man made the suit
Starring Collin Ferrell as Professor Snape.
Goddamn I wish he was Grindelwald in the first fantastic beasts tbh. Colin Ferrell as an evil wizard was dashing
He was naked from the waist down ![gif](giphy|l4FGjdn5AJxRcAjVC)
Just like me fr
And you *gandered*

Do you think he magically cleans his outfit every night or does he just have a closet filled with identical ones?
He doesn't wear an outfit at all, it's just a charm that makes you see clothes.
He was canonically a greaseball so I'm leaning towards neither. Just wore it until it started to get ripe
One outfit and a house elf.
No way... that was *Snape*? He pulled it off so well, I never even noticed!
obviously
I can hear it in exactly his voice 😭
He must have his room full of spare capes or whatever that is!
All he needs is a black helmet to become... Darth Snape.
Gonna be honest I always thought of this character as Alan Rickman doing Trent Reznor doing Snape
It wasn't perfect. Rickman was. :)
God damn that man was glorious.
I hated that guy
Snape was supposed to be greasy and had a goatee. I loved Alan and think he did a good job but he definitely wasn't book snape. I hope the tv show gives us book snape.

It’s wild how the movie casting completely overwrote what I had in my brain with the books.
That’s the thing. Most people in HP were remarkable actors down the the goddamn Janitor who is an incredible actor. When damn near everyone delivers a stellar performance it’s hard to compete.
Are you talking about Filch? He wasn't just a janitor, why are you people always talking down to the squibs?
THEY’RE lucky we even talk about them at all.
Snape was not supposed to have a goatee. That was Karkaroff. JK actually wrote the part of Snape with Alan Rickman in mind. Why am I crying just reading this. Thanks for the fact though :')
His facial hair or lack thereof is not mentioned in the books. Snape having a goatee is not mentioned anywhere.
Greasy yes, but no goatee, I think the black facial hair was described for sirius
Theres literally chapter art of snape with a goatee. https://www.reddit.com/r/harrypotter/s/As1GnwZoOY
that's the American copies I think? the actual text never mentions him having any facial hair at all lots of the covers and stuff take some artistic license

Book illustrations differ by print and version so it’s not really “book canon”.
Chapter art? Wasn't that done by different artists at different times n shit. Would Rowling have been giving feedback on these.. I doubt it.
I don’t think he ever had a goatee, are you thinking of Karkaroff?
I don't remember it being in the books, but JK did a doodle of Snape once and he had a goatee.
snape has a goatee in one of those little chapter illustrations, i think it might be the third book. he's like standing over the marauder's map or something.
Her doodle had a 5 o’clock shadow, at best, not a goatee.
I hope the new Snape is younger. Snape should be, what, 34 or so in the first book, at most? As the potters had harry pretty young.
They cast all of the adults in the series too old.
true but they did that to match alan rickman’s age
He was also only 31 in the first book lol
That’s not book snape, that’s just your own mental vision of book snape!
But fluffy trimmed his costume up a little lol
I miss him
Facts
Prof goth daddy
Kinda looks like our family priest.
In the scene when he's dying and tells Harry "you have your mother's eyes" I was hoping he would smile.
Last one looks like Jeffrey Tambor
I love that his legacy is Harry Potter, what an amazing actor. Yippee Ki-Yay Alan
Whenever I see his pics, I think Trent Reznor.
It's... a black piece of fabric
There will be no foolish wand waving or silly incantations in this class!!!!
By Grabthar's Hammer, Jane Temine was right. Mr Potter.
He do be wearing it.
Imagine trying to use that excuse in any other job 🤣 Sorry boss, but as the report writer I've deemed this report to be perfect and therefore I won't be changing it.
Man barely aged
Snape, Snape, Severus Snape.
Snape and Black are my Fav characters. ‘‘Twas a sad read for me
Well, the costumers certainly had to let it out over the years, so I would argue it did indeed change.
I mean? It's nothing. It's just black, with a cloak.
I don't believe they meant perfect in quality, but perfect for the character, which it is.
*Snape's costume in Harry Potter never changed. It was deemed perfect by designer Jany Temine.
