Plus it has the other ability neutralizing gas which gives it a niche in competitive. Even in formats with legends it has a small spot in certain teams
Honestly a really great mon. Even if I didn't use them for an HM Mule they had a great move pool as well.
Also the little wave sandshrew gives you in Gen 3 as you encounter it is one of my favorite sprites in all of pokemon.
A problem with them is they learn any ground type moves naturally in Gen 1, which isn’t the end of the world, it just means you can’t use the Dig and/or Earthquake TM’s for other members of your team.
Sandshrew was the first pokemon I ever saw on a card and it was cool enough to get me into pokemon. Also this is second generation but sandshrews animation in pokemon Chrystal is amazing
I love Abra and the gen 1 Abra sprite. Loved the thrill of finding one above cerulean city and getting lucky enough to catch one before it would teleport away.
I also liked hunting for pikachu in viridian forest.
Its basically a magikarp because it has nothing useful until it evolves, but atleast you can put some TMs on it and its good. (Depending on the game you may or may not have any worthwhile TMs for it before you can evolve it through shift training)
Only issue with Lapras is that it is level 15 when you get it, which is very low for that point of the game, so you have to do quite a bit of grinding to get him to a useable level (but he is one of my favourites, so it's definitely worth it).
Yep this, being relegated to the gambling area made polygon annoying to get. Polygon is a cool mon too, i remember though spending my first coins to get abra though cause catching the ones that tele away was annoying
I always hated tenacruel because of how often them and tentacool would pop up when surfing, then when I got older and stats were more widely available, I realized, dang it's stats are solid, if maybe not distributed great, and it's defensive typing is pretty great.
Butterfree isn't underrated. In fact, quite the opposite. It used to be your first access to psychic (Confusion) and you could literally wreck your way through 70% of the game with that ability alone. It was SO overpowered early and mid game. Gen 1 had absolutely no idea on how to handle Psychic abilities. Butterfree was compulsory party member always.
Raichu. He's always behind the shadow of Pikachu.
Rhydon. He's one of the earliest Pokemon created, its index number is 001 in the first generation, and its statue/sprite is all over the first game.
Nidoking/Nidoqueen. One of the first Pokemons ever created, Nidorino is one of the first to appear in the first games, and the only Poison/Ground before Gen 9.
Gotta be nidoking. This dude can learn soo many tms is insane. I made a team in fire red using only them, but each dedicated to a certain typing. Fire, water, etc. Favorite pokemon but it was just kinda meh.
Parasect gen 1
- Spore/Slash
- Giga Drain
- Leech Life
- Dig
You get it early (Mt Moon), beats Misty (grass), beats LT Surge (with dig TM given right before), beats Erika (bug), beats Koga (dig), Sabrina (bug), beats Blane (dig), beats Giovanni (grass and dig).
His gen 1 spirte is one of the best, in my opinion, but I'm also biased because it is my favorite Pokemon
Fr, with that speed stat there is no way it's moving before any of Blaine's Pokemon without being massively overleveled and it dies from pretty much any Fire attack.
Giga Drain did not exist in Gen 1. The only available move alike was Mega Drain at 40 base power.
Leech life also had 20 base power, rendering it useless.
Slash was okay but questionable, as crit in Gen 1 was bugged (higher Speed = higher odds, parasect has low Speed)
At least dig had 100 base power.
I love Arcanine bro. I love venusaur and Charizard equally with the slight edge going to Venusaur these past few years so if I were to use Venusaur on a gen 1 team Arcanine is a lock basically.
I have taken Charizard, Venusaur, and Arcanine to various tournaments. Most successfully with Megazard Y in Gen 6. Arcanine is a great Intimidate user.
I've not managed to run a Dragonite Team, though I've been hearing good things about Terra Normal Extremespeed this gen.
Edit: Thought this was the favorite Pokémon thread. I'm a huge Dragonite fan.
Idk much about competitive play or anything so maybe he's more popular than I think, but I never play a Gen 1 game without Sandslash. Love that lil guy!!!
Also Wigglytuff: the anime always had a lot of Jigglypuff screentime & toys but never poor Wiggly. I feel like it's a lot like Pikachu & Raichu where the pre-evo gets all the attention.
Tentacool/tentacruel seem pretty underrated to me personally.
The reason why I think so is because I don’t see a lot of love for them anytime I go on any Pokémon fan spaces. Plus the type combo balances out several weaknesses in a manner similar to bulbasaur’s type combo. The water type reduces the impact of ground type moves while the poison type reduces the effectiveness of the grass type. This basically means that electric and psychic type moves are pretty much the remaining super effective attacks in gen 1.
Whether they actually are underrated? I’m clueless on that front.
Oh yeah. I forgot about that. I started with Pokemon Sapphire so the psychic type was long balanced by then. Even so, tentacruel is definitely underrated in later generations for sure.
i like all of them tbh
starmie flew under my radar for a long time, i didnt notice it had a 520 bst and had been meta for 5 generations
i think jynx is a solid one, it was so broken in gen 1 due to being psychic (which was even more broken in gen 1) and ice. combined with the fact its really fast and has a really high special attack its good against 3 of the elite 4 members and most of the champs team.
I think the problem with pretty much any ice pokemon is that they show up so late in the game. I bet collectively ice type would be more recognized if they were scattered in a bit earlier.
Nidoking, it was just such a beast, had a massive move pool and looks sick. When I had Pokémon Yellow, I couldn't get through Brock and ended up levelling a Nidoran instead, then Nidoking for the end game, he could sweep most of the E4 for me.
The Nidoran family is the ultimate pokemon.
Interesting typing, 3 stage evolution, combination of level based and item based evolve methods, can function pretty well with either physical or special moves, gets bolt beam, spans from cute and adorable to badass and intimidating, and shows up in one of the first routes and is accessible to everyone.
Raichu considering it’s pre-evolution is literally the mascot of the franchise, as well as that iconic episode against Lt. Surge would leave a bad first impression at first
After Pokémon yellow being my first game & the anime it’s always been hard to evolve my pika. Its like the pokemon company wanted us to feel wrong doing it. That is until sun & moon that pancake loving Raichu is my boy.
I genuinely think it's bulbasaur. Slept on as a starter at least. People were more hyped about the fire dragon and the water turtle.
But bulbasaur was the best choice for at least the first 3 gyms in the game. Strong against rock. Super strong against water. And had a good defence against electric.
And that little bulb is a cutie to start with and evolves into a big slob of a monster.....and that's fairly easy to relate to in my adult life 😩
Yeah I love sandslash and tbh in gen 1, he’s quite good. You can get a tm for swords dance early, and dig does 100 dmg still. You feed it 1 x speed, do 1 swords dance and you can pretty much sweep anyone with high crit chance slash and dig
The only acceptable answer is Psyduck, I will die
on this hill. I know Psyduck is a “favorite” Pokémon but I honestly don’t think that anyone loves that lil dude as much as me. Slowpoke is also up there
I loved Hitmonchan. The fact that he learned all types of punches made him very versatile. And I just loved to pick him up, even if it meant never collecting Hitmonlee.
I know the fanbase loves it, but I wish Cubone got more spotlight treatment from TPCi. When 151 rolled out I thought it was a shoe-in for an alt because it's a pretty beloved mon, but as the generations go on I feel like Cubone love has quieted down a bit. The Alolan Marawak was a fun gift. Eight years ago.
I'll go into bat for team Mankey/Primeape.
In the games, you can catch a Mankey early on, which is helpful for the first gym, and you don't really encounter too many weaknesses until later on in the game. Definitely always an (unfairly) forgotten fighting type behind the Hitmon's and Machop line.
In the show, just a cheeky character who loves wearing his owners hat... really can't fault him there either.
An honourable mention to Victreebel, too. It's a bit harder to obtain, but it still remains one of my favourite originals, by character and design.
I want to say Jynx. It certainly has flaws, like its controversy and it's kind of weird to own a humanoid lady Pokemon.
But Jynx stomps the rest of RBY/FrLg's (idk about Let's Go) campaign with only like Slowbro and maybe Magnemite as the worst match ups. Game mechanic-wise getting a Poliwhirl sucks, and you're gonna have to give up the Psychic tm.
Krabby/Kingler were my obsession a few years ago. I remember I spent like 20+ hours trying to shiny hunt one in let's go Eevee. I'd still love to own a shiny one of each one day
I don’t think I’ve ever used Moltres due to how goofy he looks, anytime it’s available I’d rather use arcanine or h-arcanine and Articuno is pretty good now with snow so it’s not the worst of the trio anymore
I want to say Vaporeon is kind of slept on in the shadow of jolteon. Vaporeon is personally my favorite eeveelution. But I know the eeveelutions are all fairly loved so I wouldn’t say slept on necessarily. I’d say porygon is a pretty cool pokemon even though I personally wouldn’t have it on my team irl
Muk
Muk is so cool in retrospect.
Koga’s Muk spamming minimize was fucking infuriating as a little kid playing gold. Now, I do it because minimize and toxic is generally very effective
Swift users are GOATed because of that alone.
[удалено]
came here for this. grimer too
Wheezing too. Only being weak to ground and psychic, but levitating to null out ground is pretty neat.
Plus it has the other ability neutralizing gas which gives it a niche in competitive. Even in formats with legends it has a small spot in certain teams
Gen 1.
It is a gen 1 pokemon, the OP didn't state *in* gen one. They even said Magmar because of it evolution
Yeah but it’s literally a poo gas mon. If you carry it around you would be inhaling poo gas.
Thank you! My favorite Pokemon!
Sandshrew/sandslash ground typing helps gyarados w/ electric immunity and their both great HM Mules.
Sandslash was the first Pokémon I got to 100. Love them.
That usually works out well cause I teach those moves to others since I use them as hm Mules.
Sandshrew was the first pokemon I ever saw on a card and it was cool enough to get me into pokemon. Also this is second generation but sandshrews animation in pokemon Chrystal is amazing
Didn’t sandshew humble Pikachu early on in the show? That’s how I knew
I think it was his squirtle
There was a Sandshrew that beasted Pikachu too.
Honestly as someone who loves ground types great choice
they are so cute! Sandslash was my first favorite pokemon (he has been dethroned by now but still)
I love Abra and the gen 1 Abra sprite. Loved the thrill of finding one above cerulean city and getting lucky enough to catch one before it would teleport away. I also liked hunting for pikachu in viridian forest.
Maybe im Wrong but dosent abra Have 120 speciál Attack?
Honestly I have no clue.
Until it learns confusion it might as well be a magicarp :)
Its basically a magikarp because it has nothing useful until it evolves, but atleast you can put some TMs on it and its good. (Depending on the game you may or may not have any worthwhile TMs for it before you can evolve it through shift training)
105. Still more than Mew
Dewgong. By the time you can usually get one, you already have a surfer and Lapras was more popular
Plus Lapras is just handed to you in Kanto as well, which didn't help
Only issue with Lapras is that it is level 15 when you get it, which is very low for that point of the game, so you have to do quite a bit of grinding to get him to a useable level (but he is one of my favourites, so it's definitely worth it).
That forced grind helps make sure you get some EVs on it, something kids probably don't know they should be doing.
Krabby and Kingler! Love that line
Hell yeah
Krabby is love, Krabby is life! He’s so cute in the serie, bubblemouthing away haha.
Porygon
Best mon of all time!
Porygon did nothing wrong. It was Pikachu’s fault. Pikachu triggered it!! 😭
Yep this, being relegated to the gambling area made polygon annoying to get. Polygon is a cool mon too, i remember though spending my first coins to get abra though cause catching the ones that tele away was annoying
Kingler. Genuinely a really good mon, even though it's basically just a crab.
its gigantamax form should have just been an evolution.
tentacruel is, well, cool and doesn’t get nearly enough respect
I always hated tenacruel because of how often them and tentacool would pop up when surfing, then when I got older and stats were more widely available, I realized, dang it's stats are solid, if maybe not distributed great, and it's defensive typing is pretty great.
Great choice
Vileplume 🌺
Best gen 1 pokemon
Butterfree, when it gets the poison and sonic attacks it was kicking my butt 🤣
I feel like butterfree gets a lot of love, idk if I can call it underrated.
I guess you could when it comes to it's moveset, I've never really heard anything good about it's moveset till right now
I know it has top cut Dallas regionals a couple times. Sleep spam is really strong. It's gmax was really good last gen too.
Venonat
Venomoth was considered good back in the day.
Based opinion
Pretty sure Rhydon and the Nido’s are very highly rated for gen 1.
Well Nidoking. Not once have I chosen Nidoqueen over it.
I have a whole collection of graded raichu stuff. The goat.
Gotta be nidoking. This dude can learn soo many tms is insane. I made a team in fire red using only them, but each dedicated to a certain typing. Fire, water, etc. Favorite pokemon but it was just kinda meh.
Raichu has the best design of any Pokémon in my opinion
Shoutout to raichu!
Great choices!
Definitely Tangela and Mr. Mime
I think Tangela might be the best answer imo. Every other answer so far has some other form, used competitively, or has a semi big part in the show.
Parasect gen 1 - Spore/Slash - Giga Drain - Leech Life - Dig You get it early (Mt Moon), beats Misty (grass), beats LT Surge (with dig TM given right before), beats Erika (bug), beats Koga (dig), Sabrina (bug), beats Blane (dig), beats Giovanni (grass and dig). His gen 1 spirte is one of the best, in my opinion, but I'm also biased because it is my favorite Pokemon
> beats Blane (dig) Talk about being overleveled...
Fr, with that speed stat there is no way it's moving before any of Blaine's Pokemon without being massively overleveled and it dies from pretty much any Fire attack.
I guess it can beat RB Ponyta and Rapidash since their only Fire move is the inaccurate Fire Spin (70% accuracy in Gen 1)
> leech life mfw 20 base power in gen 1 and 3
Giga Drain did not exist in Gen 1. The only available move alike was Mega Drain at 40 base power. Leech life also had 20 base power, rendering it useless. Slash was okay but questionable, as crit in Gen 1 was bugged (higher Speed = higher odds, parasect has low Speed) At least dig had 100 base power.
Kabutops🗣️🗣️
Arcanine will forever be the greatest Pokémon in my heart
Arcanine is the bestest pupper. Is very popular, though.
Currently rocking him on Scarlet and he is such a TANK, and hits like a truck. Love him.
Golduck
Idk much about competitive play or anything so maybe he's more popular than I think, but I never play a Gen 1 game without Sandslash. Love that lil guy!!! Also Wigglytuff: the anime always had a lot of Jigglypuff screentime & toys but never poor Wiggly. I feel like it's a lot like Pikachu & Raichu where the pre-evo gets all the attention.
Arbok
Yes!
Kingler is great, I was sad it wasn’t in this gen
Me too
The one pokemon I always insist on in my playthrough- Starmie. Toxic Recover Surf Psychic Call it a day.
Cubone. Literally wears the skull of its Mom. Cubone is awesome and does not get enough appreciation.
My favorite Pokémon of all time, Cubone rules
Omanyte/Omastar
Twitch plays Pokémon disagrees
All hail lord helix! https://preview.redd.it/mm86eoafjm6d1.jpeg?width=903&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b3a1e8e3c2bde663b193a287f2b548ccd43eada
I didn't know I needed this thanks
Electrode and muk Stan here
Scyther is underrated for sure. He’s my favorite across all generations and is on every team I could have in any game.
Psychic was all over. Poison was shit, and anything associated with it was dragged along.
Oh yeah. I forgot about that. I started with Pokemon Sapphire so the psychic type was long balanced by then. Even so, tentacruel is definitely underrated in later generations for sure.
Don't get me wrong. It's a very nice pokemon, and a *real* nuisance for surfers. I'm so glad they gave it mirror coat!
I really like Areodactyl, used them as a tailwind setter with wide guard rockslide and dual wingbeat.
None of those are in Gen 1 except rockslide
Yea this was from swsh vgc. They asked for gen 1 pokemon not gen 1 sets.
easily staryu, awesome design, was one of misty's partner pokemon, appeared frequently in the anime yet barely anybody talks about him... poor guy :(
Lickitung!
I love that little goober!
Dewgong hands down.
GONGGGGGGGGGG
Thats the second person today do people really like him that much
Wigglytuff. Everyone I've ever talked to prefers Jigglypuff and I really don't know why. What's wrong with the pink moon bunny, huh?
Tentacruel. Good move pool, good stats.
Slowbro is one of my favorites but there's really not much fanfare about him.
Great competitive mon back in the day.
Weezing. Just...look at it.
Based
Farfetched just because I like them
Koffing/weezing. Great shiny, tanky, and hilarious to blow up in trainers’ faces
Marowak
Adamant marowak with rock head and thick club, Evd into attack and speed running double edge goes hard
i like all of them tbh starmie flew under my radar for a long time, i didnt notice it had a 520 bst and had been meta for 5 generations i think jynx is a solid one, it was so broken in gen 1 due to being psychic (which was even more broken in gen 1) and ice. combined with the fact its really fast and has a really high special attack its good against 3 of the elite 4 members and most of the champs team.
Jynx I did not know until a few months ago you can ice punch your way through kanto Edit: typo "know"
I think the problem with pretty much any ice pokemon is that they show up so late in the game.
This
Nidoking is often used in speedruns in gen 1 because of the move sets and early evolution. They usually have a nidoking at the end of Mt moon!
how old are you? anyways, dodrio
15
lapras > gyarados
Nuh uh
I'm with you, Kingler owns.
Kabutops got overshadowed by the hecvin lord helix memes
Seel, to be honest i sometimes i even forget that they exist
parasect
Paras is my favourite bug type.
Farfetched
Tangela
Nintails, definitely Nintails.
Love the variety here. It pretty much proves that nearly every pokemon is appreciate lmao. Gen 1 was awesome
I genuinely think it's bulbasaur. Slept on as a starter at least. People were more hyped about the fire dragon and the water turtle. But bulbasaur was the best choice for at least the first 3 gyms in the game. Strong against rock. Super strong against water. And had a good defence against electric. And that little bulb is a cutie to start with and evolves into a big slob of a monster.....and that's fairly easy to relate to in my adult life 😩
150%. Imo a masterclass of a starter evo line
Dewgong. Its so cute but people don’t respect it because “its just a dugong”
Sandslash, theyre my favourite gen1 pokemon and i dont see so much love for them
Yeah I love sandslash and tbh in gen 1, he’s quite good. You can get a tm for swords dance early, and dig does 100 dmg still. You feed it 1 x speed, do 1 swords dance and you can pretty much sweep anyone with high crit chance slash and dig
Tangela
Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan
Original color palette Jynx
The only acceptable answer is Psyduck, I will die on this hill. I know Psyduck is a “favorite” Pokémon but I honestly don’t think that anyone loves that lil dude as much as me. Slowpoke is also up there
Persian with Slash in the OG games is OP
I’mma say slowbro. Not sure how many used one growing up, but was usually a staple on my team
Please see flair for answer.
A fellow magmar enjoyer ?
Electabuzz and magmar are my boys forever
Doduo, Venonat, and Seadra
Kangaskhan is an HM whore so they get my vote as underrated
Scyther for real, I liked him later too when he got false swipe so I could catch Pokemon easier
Dugtrio, Thunderbadge hero.
He wasn’t underrated
poliwhirl
Dewgong
Muk is an awesome Pokemon on some stall teams, Glory To Big stall and SupaGmoney.
Tentacruel. Many hate it due to the abundance of tentacool but they have great stats.
Cloyster was always a favorite of mine!
Nidoran
I loved Hitmonchan. The fact that he learned all types of punches made him very versatile. And I just loved to pick him up, even if it meant never collecting Hitmonlee.
Scyther, one of the best pokemon ever
Sandslash
Omanyte / Omastar
Games aside, Kingler, Primeape, Dodrio
In my opinion there are a lot of most underrated Pokemon in Gen. At first I would say "Dewgong", but in my opinion "Arbok is also very underrated!
Ponyta
Parasect
Kingler hes simpy the King
I know the fanbase loves it, but I wish Cubone got more spotlight treatment from TPCi. When 151 rolled out I thought it was a shoe-in for an alt because it's a pretty beloved mon, but as the generations go on I feel like Cubone love has quieted down a bit. The Alolan Marawak was a fun gift. Eight years ago.
Fearow. Reliable attack and speed, and can sweep pretty well with drill peck. Carried my first Red nuzlocke.
Probably Pokémon banned from media outside of the games like Porygon & Kadabra.
Poliwrath or Victreebel.
Love the magmar hustle.
For me I loved Victreebell. Toxic + Wrap was a sick combo for me
Marowak
gigadonk
Dewgong is a neat little guy
I'd still love to own a shiny one of each one day
Magmar doesn’t evolve in gen 1
I know but like He still hase a cool evolution
Or dosent he
Zapdos is my guy, OU STAPLE since literally forever
Not gonna lie based opinion. Can you olso Tell mě your opinion on the other Two birds?
I don’t think I’ve ever used Moltres due to how goofy he looks, anytime it’s available I’d rather use arcanine or h-arcanine and Articuno is pretty good now with snow so it’s not the worst of the trio anymore
Charizard
Ehh what Pika💀
I want to say Vaporeon is kind of slept on in the shadow of jolteon. Vaporeon is personally my favorite eeveelution. But I know the eeveelutions are all fairly loved so I wouldn’t say slept on necessarily. I’d say porygon is a pretty cool pokemon even though I personally wouldn’t have it on my team irl
Actually shoutout to rhydon!!! Its unfairly in the shadow of golem I believe
I actually personally prefer rhydon as my gen 1 ground type it’s design is pretty dope
raichu or fearow?
I AM THE NUMBER ONE MOST UNDERRATED POKEMON IN GEN 1
Odish is pure perfection Raichu should get more love, he is WAYYYY cooler than Pikachu Kabutops is probably the coolest fossil pokemon they ever made
