I do feel sympathetic towards that. Like I can get why drugs wouldn’t be allowed, illegal in the outside world which I’m not saying I agree with, but for consistency, they want to enforce it there, but alcohol is legal in the outside world. Especially if you’re going through nasty withdrawals, that’s rough. Jail should be a conduit for separating you from being too dangerous to the outside or whatever. It shouldn’t be able to make you miserable

Given the things I’ve heard about them withholding prescription meds people need to live, I’d be kind of surprised if they cared about alcohol withdrawal

There are three philosophical purposes for legally imprisoning transgressors:
1) Isolate them from society
2) Punish them
3) Rehabilitate them
Which, and how much, of these three objectives should be the focus of the prison system has been subject to long and endless civil debate.
People get medical treatment in jail and prison. They usually have onsite care and if it's deemed bad, they go to hospitals. They are treated like any other patient when they get to the hospital.
Now what's deemed bad versus what's deem minor is a whole other issue and it's really a reflection on how we as a nation see felons.
