I live in SoCal and y’all’s answers are making me cry lol

NuggetLover21

South Florida and same … I would be living a lot better if I had as low of a rent as these responses

whatever32657

you can't compare south florida to the tampa area, south florida it a whole different beast. that's why so many people are moving from miami-broward-west palm to polk-pasco-hernando. unfortunately, that's causing another whole wave of increases in the central FL areas.

Starshinekaos

Portland here. Same.

steelear

I’m in LA paying $2100 for a 2BR 1BA and I pay less than everyone else I know here.

TTigerLilyx

Thats why we got such an influx of Californians to Oklahoma City & Tulsa, driving prices so high native Oklahomans are literally homeless.

MotherWolfThree

Commiserates in Denver..

WakingOwl1

$850 plus utilities for a two bedroom. Western Mass.

majorsorbet2point0

I'm looking to move back home to the Greenfield/Amherst area once I'm done with my education about 5-6 years plus work a little bit in my field (healthcare) beforehand. I just turned 30 my goal is to be back home before I turn 40. I'm in upstate NY now nothing compares to where I'm from.

raerae704

Ugh, I’m paying $900 plus utilities for a studio in Western Mass. I hate my greedy landlord.

WakingOwl1

I just happened to luck out at the beginning of the pandemic when I found this place. It’s a really old building that’s not in great shape and the landlady does everything as cheaply as possible - but it’s cheap and spacious with lots of natural light.

blacked_out_blur

I can’t even find a studio for less than 1300 in denver..

patrickawezome

I’m on my way I pay 2500 for a motel room

MillyClock

600.00/ month for a two bedroom with utilities included, NE Iowa. Very old but good house.

stormhaven22

Rent is definitely on the cheaper side in this state, but at a huge cost in other amenities I've found.

MillyClock

Yep! There isn’t a lot to do besides drink and our people and laws are pretty backwards. Bad weather all year long- hot, humid summer and unbelievably cold and long winter. You have to travel for hours, out of state typically, to do anything fun. Cheap rent in most places here though, lmao.

stormhaven22

Rent in my town is definitely cheap... But there is nothing to do in this town of 70 people besides go over for a gab with the post lady, or go to the bank. Both of which are only open a couple of hours a day. lol. Two hour drive to Sioux City, or a 2 hour drive to Des Moines.

MillyClock

That sounds…awful

stormhaven22

It is. But can't move somewhere 'better' (more expensive rather) until I get my brand new car paid down (my lovely old, and paid for, beater tried to eat a deer. lol. Deer lost. Beater still runs, but is a bit... interesting to drive now.)

MillyClock

😂 😂😂 I’ve hit plenty of deer in my time, so I know exactly what you mean by ‘interesting’.

stormhaven22

All I can say is that I'm glad that Iowa doesn't require inspections, and that I have a lovely junkyard shop willing to do a lot of work for cheap if I show up with parts in hand. lol. But she needed parked until I decide if she's worth fixing up the right way, or if she just needs to go to car heaven. 21 year old corolla with 300k miles, but she's been extremely trusty.

MillyClock

Corollas are trusty. Good deal that it lasted for 300k, probably time to lay her to rest though, instead of spending more money. Save your money to move to the city! 😁

stormhaven22

Thinking about trying to get on at the Wells. Heard they pay well, offer a ton of hours, and have relocation assistance. Sioux City isn't Des Moines, but it's better than where I'm at. lol.

Klutzy-Run5175

Hahaha. Hey, poor deer. Uh no. Your poor car.

stormhaven22

Poor me 🤣 first deer I ever crunched and I wasn't able to bring it home for deer sausage. Husband was totally 🧐

Klutzy-Run5175

While riding in the car with my daughter in law driving we almost hit a deer. Ran right out in front of us. Then, on the way home, all of these dead deer were dead on the side of the road. So sad.

Klutzy-Run5175

My house payment, still buying my house, is 523. including taxes and home owners insurance. It’s only 2 bedrooms, 1 bath rooms. 1100 sq ft. One of the most gorgeous, spacious backyards that I have ever owned. Small one car carport that I have had built a year ago. After reading this thread again tonight, I believe that I am sitting on a gold mine.

No-Intention859

Sound alot like Oklahoma

redbrick90

I’ve only lived in Iowa for a year and I feel like it’s a hell hole.

guitar_stonks

$1600 a month 2/2 SFH in an old scruffy suburb of Tampa Bay

Fall_bet

I'm in Pasco... I swear right doubled and tripled overnight practically

guitar_stonks

Thankfully mine didn’t go up as much as it could have and is still cheaper than others in the neighborhood, but it’s still up 65% from when I moved in 4 years ago.

Fall_bet

It's just crazy!

whatever32657

we looked in pasco and other tampa 'burbs from january 2024 to about may 2024. in that period, rent for small SFH in the nicer working-class areas went up from about $1300 to about $1800. doubled or tripled practically overnight? no, but it could seem like it. we left a HCOL area in florida when our admittedly way-under market rent of $1400 was about to be increased to $2400 literally overnight. we obviously said nope and moved upstate.

Vegetable_Junior

God what an evil increase. The nerve of some landlords.

whatever32657

right? the best part was this was after we'd lived with the aftermath of a sewage leak (you are reading that correctly) behind our bathroom wall that the LL refused to address. after a year, the bathroom walls just...crumbled. we left

ferocious_swain

1600 one bedroom in Pinellas Park

Sensitive-Horse-5386

$2600/mo for a 2/1 800sq ft house right on the border of St. Pete & Gulfport. I was paying $1600/mo last year in Palm Harbor 😭

sarah6804

How do you swing that big of a jump? I had to move out of Pinellas because of it. I make ok money and I couldn’t make it work anymore. Mine went from $1100 to $2100 same area… it’s crazy!

whatever32657

me too! except my SFH in my old scruffy suburb of Tampa Bay is $1650. been here almost a year. hasn't gone up...yet

tankezord2

90 a month, 2 rooms 1 bath, livingroom and separated kitchen. Argentina baby...

MickerBud

Monthly income? Average monthly wage in dollars for Argentina is $199, that’s horrible

TotalEatschips

I would be happy if that was my rent to income ratio in USA

delux2769

Touché, 40% on rent isn't that bad... Here in Denver, many of us are spending 60%.

TotalEatschips

Word and for a 1br not a 2br. None of my shit is separated either, 1 br is just a long studio with a wall for the bedroom. No separated kitchen

MickerBud

You can move down to Port Arthur, Texas. Cheap rent and plenty of jobs, what you give up is the scenic Colorado view. It’s flat as a pancake but we have forest to make up for it I guess 8)

whatever32657

that's why many retirees are expatriating, taking their paltry social security checks to places where that money goes a lot farther. i'd be in fat city on my social security if my rent were $90

PurplePenguinCat

It's a mortgage, not rent, but $950 in rural PA.

OkMushroom7086

Any_Scene5220

Affordable housing or subsidized housing? There’s a huge difference.

OkMushroom7086

HCCO

OkMushroom7086

Absolutely

broccoli-guac

Denver??? How

MickerBud

$540 a year “property tax”. Placed a bid on a silent auction and bought a home for $700, put about 10k into it and been living in it ever since 2010. You can find a lot of property under silent auctions. My county used to have these all the time. Not sure if they still have them

Fall_bet

I moved (became homeless) when rent went up to 1700 for a 2 bedroom in Pasco county, Florida. It's about an hour+ north of Tampa. One year it's $800 and next $1700. My friends went from $900 to $2400. she wasn't even there a year and it was time to sign her new lease.

Ilovehugs2020

The governor made it illegal for cities and counties to have price ceilings on rent increases. Fuck You Ron DeSantis

internet_thugg

Just wanted to add another FUCK YOU DESANTIS (not from Florida but follow politics)

Ilovehugs2020

Good to know he is despised NATIONALLY

internet_thugg

The fact he had to amend his own book ban because the Bible kept getting banned lives rent-free in my head! What a loser he is.

Ilovehugs2020

Really? I feel like I’m living in a Comedy Central Show. We used to joke about this level of idiocy. Now it’s now to pass. Can someone check the governor’s GPA while he was at Harvard? I know he was there on a baseball scholarship.

Kevlar_Potatum_6891

adding another FUCK YOU DESANTIS just because, well he’s Ron fucking deSantis, need i say more

dirndlfrau

I lived in Florida for 20 years, I enjoyed it. Floridians were really nice and mostly welcoming to us foreigners (from another state) but, ya, the political climate isn't doing much for it these days. RD attacks Mickey Mouse....that's just bad optics. I hope his mistress gets pregnant. (that was really mean to say)

blacktipwheat

So wrong.

RyouIshtar

We now have a house, but when we had an apartment it was $1300, however it's only that 'cheap' because we moved in there in 2019, people moving in today is being charged almost $1700. 1700 for rats, roaches, and black mold they refuse to get rid of. (This is for a 2 br/ba) ETA: Oh and those are for the old apartments that was made in the 1960s, the newer ones that were made in the 2xxx era are electric and way more expensive with the same issues

CyndiIsOnReddit

300 a month to rent 2 rooms and a private bath in a home I have full use of in a great neighborhood. The thing is I also clean and take care of the owner's pets so that's part of the rent agreement too.

whatever32657

yea, but dude. west virginia. beautiful place, but working at walmart is a very coveted job there. ps before all the west virginians downvote: i lived there myself, so i *know*

More-Stuff69

Yeah we actually got a housing voucher through HUD and they help pay some of the rent. Our rent here without any assistance is over $700/month for our 3 bedroom.

Formal-Telephone5146

$2600 dollars 3 bedroom apartment outside of Seattle

puremysticalmayhem

We pay that down south some, Vancouver Washington in. Small 1900 sq ft 3/2 ranch. But the landlords keep the outside immaculate. Yard maintenance is include and a full yard crew comes weekly. But man rent is what is keeping us poor.

Not rent but my mortgage 2 bdr 984 sq ft house, NE WI $775

Status-Jacket-1501

About the same in Southern Indiana. We haven't closed yet, but if nothing goes awry that's what our house payment including property tax and insurance will be. Rent on our current house is $750 it was supposed to be a buy on contract that would've been paid off 1.5 years ago if the company didn't dick us. 😑 After a year it suddenly went month to month and apparently the whole purchase agreement was out the window. Don't buy on contract, folks.

jamiej27

$400 per month, I pay $75 and hud pays the rest. In WV, two bedrooms.

wvharmony

Some of your rent is more than I make in a month! Crazy... I'm in a small town in WV, though. I don't pay rent. I live in a family house but pay taxes and upkeep (which isn't as cheap as it may sound) My son rents a 2 bedroom/1 bath, very rundown house in town, and pays $500/mo for rent (no utilities included). It's cheap for our area but, again, it's an old house that hasn't been well cared for.

Individual_Walrus149

I’m also in WV & pay $1250 for a 105 year old 3bed/1.5 bath house (really 2 bed the third bedroom is like a small office. It is on a good street but close to a rougher area. Nothing is updated, the carpets are stained, there’s a lot that could be better. I hate that I pay this much but it was the cheapest we could find that was somewhat livable.

$1530/mo, 3bd/1ba. Hudson Valley NY. We’ve been with our landlord since 2018, he’s an absolute unicorn gem. Other end of the block has 2bd/2ba going for $3310/mo.

AuggieNorth

I've been paying $1600 for a large 2 bedroom 4 miles from downtown Boston for 8 years. We moved in when Obama was President on a 6 month lease and have been month to month for 7.5 years. And meanwhile prices around us have gone crazy, so by now this place is a steal. But all good things come to an end. The landlord put the place on the market, we just an open house, and there should be a buyer this week. Then we'll find out if we can stay or not. We're willing to pay up to $2400. That's a 50% increase, but still cheap for around here. I'm a mover, and today we moved a guy into a $6500 apartment in a skyscraper in downtown Boston with incredible wrap around views of everything.

PinkMonorail

$900/month including water for a 1-bedroom, SoCal beach city. Nowhere near the actual beach. Landlord is a family friend.

$750 in Tampa but I live with three roommates and its small and dirty - alleyway kitchen, not supposed to house 4 people.

Standard-Dingo-8642

Northern Ontario, Canada. My mortgage is $776 property tax $3400/year on a 2 story, 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home. The average rent in this area is about $1000 for a one bedroom apartment to about $2000 for a 3 bedroom house. House was purchased in 2021 at 2.9%.

mentally_ill_ofc

it WAS $1050 for a 2-bed townhome in idaho (and tbh, that was a steal. everyone else was paying $1450 for theirs in that same complex) anyway, now i pay only $200 a month living at my mom’s house with my spouse. cuz that’s just the way the cookie crumbled. our landlord sold and we got booted. we just can’t afford a new deposit + rent at the new normal price. so now we live with mommy and save all our money to hopefully get enough of a down payment to have a reasonable monthly mortgage. for anyone wondering, we made more last year than my family of 5 did while growing up. money just doesn’t do what it used to hahahha

$935, includes water and sewer and trash for a 2 bedroom, 1 bath in a duplex. Spacious unfinished basement (it's pretty dry too). Washer and dryer included without a coin box. back porch off one bedroom. 2 car garage shared with upstairs neighbor, unfenced yard. Older house, inner suburb of Cleveland, OH. I've been here over 10 years. The house next door, same layout, was bought buy someone last year to rent out. The neighbors pay almost 3x's what I do with nothing included. Not even trash cans, which my landlord pays the city a fee for based on how many we have.

SparklePanda425

$1370 for a 2br/1ba in Southern NH. Landlord just told us the other day that he wants to raise it to $1600 though. It is technically a condo in a garden-style building and he owns it, we rent from him.... The best part.... He paid ~$67k for the place in 2014 I think? So he's probably got it paid off by now or has a stupid low interest rate. He has never lived here. Direct quote from him: "The rent I charge is quite below market rates. So rent change will be in line what what those rates are. I will keep them slightly lower than the market rates to help out a bit but cannot have them too low. Just an FYI so you can start planning on next steps. Thanks." Scumbag.

Purple-Sprinkles-792

I live in federal housing but it's a nice well maintained apartment complex. Our 2 br apartments go for somewhere between $720-$775 full price. They were $680 when I moved in in 2014 so I m just guessing. However I pay much less,32% of my income.

Successful_Read_1622

I live in montgomery Alabama on the west side. I pay $500.a month base rent plus $50 additional for my cat so $550 total. It's a privately owned smaller apartment complex probably built in the late 1960s. I have a 1 bedroom 1 bath unit.2 bedroom units are $600 and 3 bedrooms are $700 here. The landlord does not accept section 8. He will.accept rental assistance like if you get help with move in costs or to catch up on back rent. Apartment is pretty basic..no washer/dryer hookups, no garbage disposal dishwasher or fancy appliances. It's also not in the greatest section of town. Our property manager is pretty good about trying to keep out a bad element. Mostly working people who dont earn a lot of money live here, like myself. people who are on fixed incomes and a few single moms with kids or young families. The parking is free, water/sewer/trash is included in the rent. Tenant is responsible for their electric and wifi. I like my little place and appreciate the blessing that it is. I have been on the public housing wait list for 3 years and more than likely will have to wait one-two more years until a 1 bedroom unit is available. The irony is that I will probably have to pay more in rent there in public housing or reduce my hours for lower rent. When it is time for me ro go tho I'm going to take advantage of the opportunity because there is no guarantee that this ittle complex won't be sold and the rents drastically raised or leases terminated or other things that can happen with gentrification. So I guess going to public housing is my way of trying to make sure I don't find myself homeless if my complex was sold and rents raised or If my job status changed my rent would adjust accordingly.

Such-Mountain-6316

There's a way to find out online. Research "rent and housing costs in America (or put in the area in question)". I assure you that public records are the give away. This is on the list of things I will not put online.

$900, coastal virginia, exactly 8 minute drive from the beach. It’s a family home im just paying the mortgage + $150. I’m also making upgrades. My rent on my one bedroom apartment was $1300 😭

OkAcanthocephala1966

My mortgage is $3500 USD/month. I bought a duplex in the Minneapolis area this year. I might rent the other side depending on timing, but the intent was to open a daycare business for my wife on that side to turn a profit and save on daycare. If I were to rent it, local comparables are renting from 2000-2400, though I would put mine up for $1600. Not because it's bad. It's actually quite nice. I'm just not interested in playing that game of trying to squeeze every penny out of someone else. For me, I just need about $1600 to make the mortgage more comfortable. My intent was to never do that by way of renting it though. However the $1600 comes is fine, though the ideal is through a child care business. Locally, child care costs about $300-400/wk depending on the place. We were thinking like $220-250/wk at our place. That's enough to make it worth our while, hire someone at $15/hr to help out 20 hours per week, cover all the expenses and still make $3k/month (assuming the maximum number of kids). We were also thinking about trying to churn a bit of money on Rover, but we'll have to think harder about that one.

I currently pay $2730 per month for my mortgage for a 3 bed 2 bath home that was built last year. I was paying $1179 / mo for a 1 bed 1 bath apt in Round Rock Texas in 2022. I just looked up rent for the same apt- $1200, and first month is free! Mind blown. Rents are cooling here because well, the economy is tanking.
