There are limitations, but not any more stringent than laptop batteries.

ViolentHippieBC

One of the most annoying preventable sounds, I find, is when people have the CLICK sound on when texting. Im a gamer and know how this controller will sound.

Kimber8King

Ever thought of a PS Vita bro? 😎

reddragon105

And the Vita's screen would be the same size!

Kimber8King

Smaller battery bro hahaha

reddragon105

Smaller everything except the screen - so perfect for a flight.

Kimber8King

Yeah I travel quite a bit for work either bring my Vita or Switch

Unusual-Staff4722

And why does that matters? The dude is carrying a huge battery anyway. There's a lot of smaller powerbanks out there...

[deleted]

No definitely not, the PSone screen is a fair bit larger, the PSvita's screen is 5" widescreen and the PSone screen is 5" 4:3. PS1 games on a vita screen would be a lot closer to 4".

reddragon105

Fair point, I wasn't taking aspect ratio into account, but overall screen size will be 10.68in² on the Vita and 12in² on PSOne, so the Vita's screen is 11% smaller overall. And the Vita's screen will be 2.45in high, and a 4:3 image at that height will be 4.08in diagonally, so 18.4% smaller for PS1 games. But I think losing 18.4% of the screen size is a small price to pay for what must be a 90+% reduction in volume and weight.

Pants_Catt

Each to their own, but having flown a lot in my life, I'll take the convenience of a Steam Deck over this cumbersome set up any day. The wires alone would drive me nuts, nevermind the sheer bulk of all the components.

imbriandead

Fr though, my first thought was "why not just bring an emulator?" Psx games can run on virtually anything nowadays. Phones, tablets, handhelds like the 3DS and steam deck, laptops... hell, practically anything with a screen. I can understand wanting to play on real hardware, but I would suck it up for a plane ride. Imagine if the people next to him need to get up for some reason

reddragon105

No love for the actual PlayStation handhelds, the PSP and Vita?

sensible_human

These can actually run PS1 games natively!

reddragon105

Partially - the PSP's CPU has a similar architecture to the PSX, so it's likely that CPU code is run natively, but everything else (RAM, GPU, audio, etc.) is emulated through Sony's official PSX emulator, POPS (PlayStation One Portable Station).

sunflower_rainbow

Its a really good emulation considering the age of psp. Most titles run flawlessly. PSP to this day is my preferred way of playing ps1 games. Not to mention it can output 240p to CRT (while most other emulation devices can't)

reddragon105

Yeah, it's pretty good because it was developed internally by Sony - they'll know all the tricks and idiosyncrasies of the PS1's hardware, and they probably had people working on the emulator that had worked on the original console. It actually started life on the PS2 - because Sony wanted to start selling PS1 games digitally, but the PS1 hardware in the PS2 can't access the PS2's hard drive, because of course the PS1 wasn't developed to interface with a HDD. With a modded PS2 you can run any game from HDD, but if you try launching a PS1 game ISO it will detect that it's a PS1 game, hand it over to the PS1 hardware, and then just restart because it loses access to the HDD/ISO, so it's as if the disc was removed. But with the emulator you can run PS1 games from HDD on PS2. So I think officially Sony didn't get as far as selling PS1 games on the PS2, but the emulator was used for at least one demo, and modders were able to use the files from that to get it to work with other games, and developed a launcher for it called POPStarter. Meanwhile, the official version continued development and was used on the PSP and later Vita. The PS3 and PS4 use a different emulator, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was largely based on POPS.

jY5zD13HbVTYz

Does it do save states?

Constant-Activity

The only thing is Sony wanted to buy the game all over again even if you owned the game on disc. This alone was enough reason not to use their emulation on their official handhelds.

DonkeyTransport

So here's a question. My sister had a PSP, I had no idea the Vita existed. Is there a huge difference between the two?

reddragon105

Yeah, it's a whole different console (although it's fully backwards compatible with the PSP, so it can do everything the PSP can do, it just doesn't have a UMD drive). It's more powerful and has its own catalogue of games, including some notable exclusives, has a much better quality screen (especially the original model, as they have OLED screens - the Slim Vitas are just regular LCD), a second analogue stick, rear touchpad, two cameras, Bluetooth, and it can remote play pretty much any game from a PS4 console.

yocool13

It can remote play pretty much every game on your PC as well since the VITA is trivial to "jailbreak"

freddddsss

Booted up my vita for the first time since like 2013, golden Abyss was a banger

bbkn7

Yes, it was the PSP’s next-gen successor. The PSP graphically was a bit below the PS2, The PSVITA was a bit below the PS3.

imbriandead

I've never owned one and they completely slipped my mind🥲 I do plan to get at least one of those one of these days

WildGrem7

A steam deck should be able to emulate all of those systems anyway

lasertrex

My thought as well? My psp is my fav nes/snes/psx sim

nial93

Ps1 games on ds?

imbriandead

you bet! The PCSX ReARMed core on Retroarch runs great on mine. I think you have to have one of the new 3DS/2DS models for it to run without lag though. [Here are some pics of it in action!](https://imgur.com/a/cpnjAkT)

sensible_human

u/nial93 was asking about DS but that's pretty sweet. I'd be very impressed to see PS1 running on a DS!

Unusual-Staff4722

https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoDS/s/zNwmWlFom0

Professional_Baby24

I can play ps1 games on my galaxy watch. I don't know how that compares to the hardware on a ds. But I'm not surprised at all

Loud-Log9098

PSP runs PS1 really good.

Unusual-Staff4722

Ps1 on DSi runs amazingly at 4fps/5fps... a totally conceptual crappy emulator. It's runs extremely badly on old 3DS, and have acceptable performance on New 3DS. Forget about playing PS1 on DS/DSi. Even o3DS don't worth the experience.

Safety_Sam

What’s a good emulator for IOS?

brodecki

I used [Provenance](https://provenance-emu.com/) to play PSX (and N64) on an iPad

Safety_Sam

Sorry for being stupid, but how do I download it?

brodecki

I used [AltStore](https://altstore.io/) to sideload it (no jailbreaking required), but [apparently it's coming soon to App Store as well](https://9to5mac.com/2024/04/19/provenance-playstation-emulator-app-store/).

Safety_Sam

Tried, unfortunately can’t get it to work right now. But I did stumble across a Nintendo emulator and it works like a charm. Thanks for the guidance to emulation.

Pants_Catt

ePSX is what I used to use years ago. Was good enough.

Full-Way-7925

Apple is just now allowing emulators. Delta is available for some Nintendo systems. I think PSP as well. The problem with using an phone for emulation is you have either use on screen keyboard (sucks) or some kind of external controller which is one more thing to carry around.

imbriandead

Unfortunately, I'm not sure... I have an Android. Retroarch, from what I've read online, does work on iOS, but it seems to be kind of a pain to set up. It works on my [Android](https://imgur.com/a/nrnlpac) phone with minimal setup, though. There might be a better alternative for iPhone users out there, but sadly, I don't know what it would be

midwestn0c0ast

nobody cares about emulators when you have the actual hardware

imbriandead

On a plane tho I have a PlayStation as well but it ain't leaving the house when I have several portable devices that can play the same games💀

midwestn0c0ast

“on a plane though?” you mean the intended use case for a portable screen?? lmfao

imbriandead

It would be super inconvenient on a plane unless you're riding in a class better than economy (though I admittedly don't know what seating is like in business and first class) Every plane I've ever been on would have no room for that setup whatsoever, and if you or the people next to you have to get up mid flight then it would just be cumbersome I can imagine bringing the portable screen to a friend's house or maybe even a coffee shop or something, but I wouldn't really consider it appropriate for a plane, with the huge battery that probably wouldn't get through security aside

midwestn0c0ast

Battery on lap. PSOne on lap. Battery on tray. PSOne on tray. You're making this harder than it needs to be lol

imbriandead

Bringing an entire console with a screen, battery, controller, and discs on a plane is harder than it needs to be dawg. I'm not saying it isn't doable, I'm just saying that there are far, far easier ways to play PS1 games on the go. This setup in 2024 is more of a novelty than anything when there are countless easier ways to travel with your games that don't require taking all of it with you

iVirtualZero

It's also collectable and that screen is becoming more rare. It's better to leave it at home in a nice set up. And take something like the Anbernic or the Retroid around.

Dabbinz420

Yea, steam deck is my go to gaming device.

[deleted]

But the vibes

Pants_Catt

The vibes are impeccable, just not on a plane.

Braaains_Braaains

"I have *had* it with these muthafuckin vibes on this muthafuckin plane!" (guy beside OP, inevitably.)

what’s harmful about it? i can see it being annoying but what’s the harm?

veriix

Thanks to reddit being less than supportive of their own platform, that's the only recourse we have to reporting any sort of bot. That being said, it is also harmful to the community when assumptions are made, like people are talking to a poster who will actually respond to questions, and on a longer timeline it's harmful to have accounts that are made to be sold to people who want to manipulate the reddit community.

No need for a Steamdeck for PS1. r/Retroid would like to have a much lower cost word with you.

StarWolf64dx

android is too hard to set up for a first timer, go with an anbernic rg353m. drag and drop roms/isos/chds and it’s setup

ViperDiaperTaskForce

Honestly, I didn’t know it got easier than Android. Does it have the different system’s EMUs preloaded?

StarWolf64dx

It does. On android you’re still using retroarch but you have to download and assign all the cores. If you use Daijisho launcher it will assign a preferred core but you still have to go in and download them. With the Linux systems you can just drop the games into folders that generated the first time you start the system. Same with the alternative OS like ArkOS and JelOS. I’m not shooting from the hip here, I have 8 or 9 linux based devices and a Retroid Pocket 4+, I got close to giving up on the RP4 because it was just a lot more finicky. Once it’s set up, it’s a dream and it’s probably better than Linux. Also I did not downvote you, looks like somebody doesn’t like emulation lol.

ViperDiaperTaskForce

lol downvotes are fine. I have the RP3+ and think it’s just the coolest little machine for the price. I forget what launcher I use as it’s a been a while since I set it up, but I use it to run the standalone EMUs for most systems. I like being able to customize each individually. Also able to use some VJ loops I found as a live wallpaper. Looks pretty neat. Nice to meet another Retroid Pocket lover outside of the subreddit. I’ve 3D printed longer sticks for the guilikit Hall effect sensor sticks, added some internal thermal cooling for when I’m running GameCube or PS2, swapped out for the squishy membrane buttons, printed like 5 sets of grips/cases/gripclipcases and the list goes on. I love the DIY aspect of the handheld and the community is pretty great.

Wero_kaiji

Why not just use a standalone instead of Retroarch? I personally prefer having an Emulator for each console I want to play, then I make a global "ROMs" folder with a folder for each console inside of it, that way you can just drag and drop games like you mentioned

StarWolf64dx

Thats an option I didn’t try. Do you have to bind controls with each emulator? I found that with retroarch and the daijisho front end the controls were basically mapped “correctly” for everything.

Wero_kaiji

Some have default controls that do work but I personally like to bind them myself since I use a weird control layout, basically it's the same as the xbox layout but B and X are swapped, I also like to bind things like fast forward, save and load states, take screenshots, etc. If you don't care about anything that I mentioned and use a "normal" layout then yeah, I can see how that could be annoying, you only need to do it once tho so it's not a big deal

WhydYouKillMeDogJack

doesnt steam deck have about 1.5hr battery life?

Pants_Catt

If you're playing AAA games sure. Low graphic games and definitely PS1 emulation you easily get 6-7 hours if not more.

christmas-vortigaunt

They also already have the battery for charging

ChangelingFox

For some people the bulk is kinda part of the point. It's a nostalgic, old-school experience.

spattzzz

Haha yeah I thought that’s just an ugly switch.

midwestn0c0ast

good thing nobody asked

BaconNamedKevin

You ain't getting on a plane with that battery lol

Commando_NL

Just tell security this Playstation is meant for Saddam Hussein so he can build weapons of mass destruction. It's gonna be fine. I promise.

BaconNamedKevin

I wonder if Saddam ever played any PsX games.

Safety_Sam

Instructions unclear, I was invaded by America.

koalazeus

u/annunaki22 watch out, they are trying to replace you. And also what battery is that? Could I live for a while on one of those?

macneto

I mean, this seems awkward as hell to set up on a plane, and you can definitely get a very affordable handheld device that accomplish the same thing and fits in your pocket. But you do you dude!

EverythingPSP

Why not just use a PSP :P

Full-Way-7925

Unless you have a PSP Anbernic type devices are cheaper.

Duramajin

Lol

Ms_Noah

All jokes aside, I recommend to anyone who hasn't gotten a chance to play psx games on one of these bad boys to give it a try if the opportunity comes up. The screen is like nothing else, something I've never seen on any television or emulator. I can't explain what it is, maybe because it was specifically designed for psx games or something. It really is a sight to see.

[deleted]

For real i feel 90% of the people hating on this don't know how damn crisp PS1 games look on these, they're a perfect pixel match with PS1 games, so you get perfectly sharp (but chunky) 240p RGB pixels, it's very easy on the eyes. Would play on this over a PSP or Vita any day.. maybe any place.. most places. Plane IS one of those places.

Full-Way-7925

The screen is not the issue, the bulk of the setup is.

JonnyB2_YouAre1

You probably have an outlet next to your seat.

WhydYouKillMeDogJack

this. i think ive only been on 1 plane in the last 10 years that didnt have a power outlet.

console_fanatic

What make/model is the battery? How much play time are you getting?

TheReviewsBrothers

God imagine sitting next to someone that brings this on a plane 😅. Make sure you take Tekken 3 so the person next to you can play.

Odd_Car_3684

Nice. Wonder how long ps5 would work with that battery 😂

KeeperServant_Reborn

Caddicarus on a train: Yes, I beat Psycho Mantis!

facw00

Way back in the late 2000s I was sitting next to someone on a flight who was trying to use a Xbox 360 with a portable headset using the plane's outlets. Fortunately for my ears (launch 360s were loud!), the outlets at the seats were not able to deliver enough power to drive the 360, and it didn't work.

scarper42

Screw common sense and haters in the comments, this is great.

perkinwarbeck

For real. I can’t believe how many people think OP evidently doesn’t know there’s more convenient ways to play PS1 games.

Etreslias37

Tf it's a Switch!

DinnerSmall4216

Remember when I wanted the screen as a kid because of the phase of portable dvd players never did get my hands on one for a decent price.

MrMuscelz

Dude, I totally forgot I had that. Wow, such a nostalgic trip. I just had right now. Have fun.

Braaains_Braaains

And you didn't even need to get on a plane!

0xSnib

They’re going to love that battery on the plane

theblairwitches

This is a bot reposting someone’s genuine post.

Notsononymouz

This guy just wants people on the plane to know that he has FIFA 97

saxbophone

"You may bring portable electronic devices into the cabin as long as they have flight mode enabled"   The portable electronic device:

SXAL

Now just duct tape the battery and the gamepad to the console, and you'll have a portable game system to rival Nintendo!

Maxwellstreetpolish

Are u bringing the bowl of pears on the plane too?

Adi_San

I forgot how small the psOne is. It's the length of a controller.

Moonsmark

What is a PS Vita?

JGS588

Bring two controllers.. you never know if someone challenges you on Tekken :)

Aggravating_Sand_445

That's going to be uncomfortable.. hopefully you bought an extra seat, I remember flying from Michigan to Las Vegas during the winter when I was in middle school, it was snowing and really cold in Michigan when I left, had my GBA with me for the flight, got off the plain in Las Vegas and it was the hottest I had ever felt outdoors so I never put my coat on again, never saw my GBA again, thought it got lost at the airport or something then a year later I'm packing to go back to Michigan and boom its in my coat pocket lol

Sapun14

why not just emulate ?

obscurepainter

Just get a PSP

DyingLasagne

all that just to realize you could bought psp

Kashm1r_Sp1r1t

Get a handheld emulator, my guy.

Creative_Big6089

This is hella sweet. Although I wouldn't bother. I use my cracked PSP GO to run PSX ISOs

MarkusANDcats

I used to love mine as a kid and would bring it on long car rides thinking how cool it was to play Playstation like it was my Gameboy. Today though I would recommend you opt for emulation on your mobile device and use a wireless Xbox controller. That's how I'm playing my old games while living in the Philippines right now. Iv also got an USB-c to hdmi adapter so I can plug into any TV wherever I'm staying. Wireless bluetooth headphones helps too

First-Junket124

I love the PS1 as much as anyone here, but with this setup I honestly have to ask. Why not just spend the money you spent on the battery on a handheld instead? If you don't care about dualshock games get a Miyoo Mini+ or an RG35XX for compactness or a Retroid Pocket 3+ for a more traditional handheld? I get it, it's cool, but I'd be worried they would allow that on.

frederik88917

Too much of an overkill my friend . You can connect a PS4 remote to your phone and have it as your emulator with basically the same feeling

ContributionOk6578

Just use a phone and a PS4 controller, I mean the setup is cool but I imagine it is very inconvenient when traveling 😅

Designer_Storm8869

Just dump the CD to file, put it on your phone and play it on phone with wireless controller.

kblam101

Pretty sure your average android phone from eight years ago can play games on the ps1 emulator app. Why carry such a janky setup on the plane? At home, yes ps 1 in flesh is awesome but on the plane, .... no..., maybe in the car is decent but thats that.

isadksgad

I believe Is easier to use a PS vita with adrenaline 🤣

cyberspacedweller

The battery looks huge. Are you sure it’s within guidelines for flying?

Nowzad

Those are some sad pears

HideyHoh

Reddit moment

gold_rush_doom

We have that, it's called a PSP or PS vita

Kwanza_Bot93

I think it’s time to upgrade sir

Jollypoof

Damn man buy a switch

Yobbo89

That's probs just borderline airplane safe at 100 watts, um wouldn't it be a little better to use a buck converter and a smaller lipo for traveling?

pabz2236

My man, get a PSP

Ybalrid

This is cool! There’s probably a way to skip the AC power supply and power it with a DC power bank? Would be more efficient. But I don’t think there’s anything ready made to do that so I’d you are not handy with electronics, what you did is your best option

Omie-Wan-Kenobi

Wouldn't it just be easier to get a vita? Lol

arsinoe716

In my youth, I had a battery from Interact. I used to charge it for long trips. About 2 hours of gaming.

ChrissTeeToes

Only an asshole would bring that much crap on a plane

Nehal1802

Planes have outlets now

retrohank

Damn dawg. I just modded my PSP for this sort of fix.

iggsr

Lmao they Will think your are a terrorist

SaltAttic

I get it. I mean, I really do get it, but a PSP with a bunch of eboots on it would be a lot less cumbersome. Especially if you aren’t in the window seat and people have to to get by you to go to the washroom.

deathlord9000

op is karma farming repost bot.

izoxUA

PES was better)

Forsaken-Badger-9517

I would've just went with a Vita, but this is cool nonetheless!

aeninimbuoye13

Please dont use a transformator when you want to have it portable. There are many powerbanks that can output that Voltage directly.

iVirtualZero

Since the PSOne needs 7.5v, I wonder if you can just use a Barrel Jack to USB C cable on a 30watt Power Adaptor or Power Bank.

dropdatabase

~~You COULD bring it to a plane, sure. but do you really want to?~~ scratch that, There is a 99% chance this a bot account. you are all replying to some dumb LLM. Check their content and account age.

readditerdremz

ah yes, so comfortable

Jahamez69420

How long does it actually last on a full charge?

Nazraq

I have the same thing, and I love it! The original PSP.

Intrepid_Escape6366

r/tsa

Roygbiv_89

I did this on a train once with a ps2 . Felt cooler than I looked . Managed to get a game of tekken with a random thou

mono9562

Looks like a bomb ‐airlines personel

LucasTheHawk

Just get a steam deck and emulate, that seems like a hassle.

greengengar

There's like 6 better ways to do this...

0ligore

Lame

Organic_South8865

Why not just use a PSP or Vita or Emulator at this point? I mean it would be kinda cool but I bet the novelty will quickly wear off. Actually it would be kinda awesome to see someone pull this out on a plane.

novophx

TSA: haha no

Himitsu_Togue

Good idea with the plane thing. No one will suspect all the wires and shit right? But for real, look up the max battery capacity you would be allowed to have.

shutyourbutt69

Phones, tablets, Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck: Are we a joke to you?

Grungelives

I just bring my og psp, seems like alot of hassle with this. Im sure its a good conversation starter though lol

xhanort7

That's the bomb!

lw902960

You could just play with a laptop and a ps4 controller in 4k

BarryBadgernath1

Awesome portable setup but I totally wouldn’t fly with it

SinR_NL

Please do not forget to take pictures when playing on a plane! Epic!

SinR_NL

And now go find yourself a Sony Glasstron!

j1mmythek1d

Enter the most annoying twat on the flight

Chimchampion

You sure you don't want to bring it on dates like that other person?

P_Riches

Shits lit.

deejayee

Maybe hack a vita?

Fullthew

This is past the line where we should get an handheld for emulation.

TNTBOY479

I mean the PSP runs PS1 games really well if you want to scale the setup down just a tad bit

Spirit-Walker-

i'd use my phone or my laptop with a wireless controller. this seems too much of a strugle on the go. it's cool tho.

carpetvore

There has to be a better way to do that than DC ->AC ->DC

kamczoo

You can take on plane decent 14" crt too, hell no to such small screen

Unusual-Staff4722

Thanks god that PSP and PS Vita exists...

Shinm0h

I would have relied on a ps vita and its charger, for travel. Far more compact. But this ways is fun.

TheGimpSteve

Pics from the plane or it didn’t happen

Yaxhtz

You're dumb af.

ListersParanoia

This post didn't go the way OP hoped it would go.

big_ry82

Anyone doing this on a plane next to me is getting an elbow to the face. Like Arnie does in Commando.

thedocter22

Nice

Calm-Respect-4930

My guy just use a tablet or your phone

Harry_Flowers

Lol I see you really don’t like emulators

[deleted]

You are brave, screw the haters, the only thing stopping me from doing this is i don't got nowhere to fly. Might i reccommend a Dualshock 3/4/5 with a Brooke wingman to get rid of that controller wire though.

midwestn0c0ast
