I wish I could tell you otherwise but no, a majority are drunk and/or high. I’m sure several are people driving when overly tired, whose symptoms can match being intoxicated.
I almost got side swiped on Broadway just last week by an old lady that should not have been driving anymore. She couldn't stay in her own lane, barely stopped for reds and then took 30sec to go on green, couldn't hardly turn. And similar incidents happen once a month in that area. I usually call alamo heights non emergency for them to check on them and make sure they aren't having some kind of medical emergency like a stroke or something.
When I moved here, my parents regularly had fundamental issues with how the roads were laid out compared to where they were from in a different state. You could just access businesses from the highway, and (it sounds crazy to us) but they really didn’t get why there were so many exits or turnarounds or how/why they had to use them.
When I see someone driving the wrong way, I don’t assume it’s alcohol, I assume they’re confused.
The locals know how the streets work, but not everyone does.
True. Lived in NYC, Providence RI, Lubbock, Suburban North Carolina, and now San Antonio and I’ve never lived somewhere where I’ve met more friends with more dui’s/alcohol related crimes.
You should upload them.i recommend you submit them to dashcam lessons on YouTube. Just be on top of your defensive driving and you’ll be fine. Stay safe out there.
TxDOT San Antonio has long worked to help identify where and how WWD is happening and has installed a bunch of sensors and procedures at a level that actually leads the nation. They take this particular issue very seriously and if you see a wwd, I would report what you know to them. Particularly valuable is where the actual WWD incident is starting, I.e., where is the driver making that initial mistake. So they can go out there and put counter measures.
I would call that line for their district and tell them you want to talk to the head of traffic operations,
https://www.txdot.gov/about/districts/san-antonio-district/san-antonio-district-contact.html
In this town there are three causes - drunk driving/driving while high, not paying attention/on their phone, not knowing what one is doing and thus turning where they shouldn’t.
SA is not any easy town to navigate. Different parts of town have different road quirks. Want proof? Drive Culebra from Loop410 to Loop 1604. At some point t you will find you changed streets but you never made a turn.
On the NE side, drive WW White from IH37 to IH35.
TL;DR: San Antonio is full to the brim of selfish shitty people.
I’m from here, so I know from a lifetime of experiences. 🤷♂️
This city has a lot of generations of idiots that think it’s stupid to follow the laws. Think back to middle and high school days…the kids that never listened and were always in trouble…it’s those people and their kids (probably most of their relatives, too) that are bought up to act the same.
It’s also the people who think they’re better than everyone else and think that they’re the main character everywhere they go.
Important to have a dash cam. It's completely useless 99.99% of the time, but is something you wish you had when something happens.
Recommend COXPAL A11T 3 channel dash cam on Amazon, very good quality.
COXPAL hardwire kit optional, for 24-H parking monitor.
SanDisk Extreme 256GB or 512GB microSD card, for reliable recording.
BTW: Need to pay attention to the installation position of the rear cam if your vehicle is SUV or MPV (No problem if Sedan), i.e. avoid pulling rear cam cable when open/close the trunk.
My concern about dash cams (I’ve wanted them in our vehicles for a while now) is that they’ll get stolen.
The amount of car break ins and burglaries all over the city make me think the dash cameras will get stolen eventually
google wrong way crash in san antonio and you would be shocked how often it happens on the highway after midnight. Our city's response is atrocious. They close down the freeway if a cop has someone stopped on the far left shoulder, but wrong way drivers they just monitor and say "oh well". They need to shut down the freeway and divert traffic, and put up spike stripes to stop these vehicles before they kill innocent people.
Similar thing happened last weekend, up by i10 and 1604. Turning out of the taco palenque to the access road and this idiot is coming down the right side with his hazards on…
If they're older residents and drove mostly around the outskirts, they may be accustomed to 2-way access and feeder roads, lose concentration and simply do what they normally do not realizing that those 2-way feeders are not the standard but the exception.
It was baffling to me too, when I moved back in 2010. I had lived here before that, but spent some time in Florida before coming back. When I did, there was a trash of them, and the flashing Wrong Way signs were installed.
Some have said it's because of drunk drivers, & while you can't stop everyone, there's just really no excuse for it anymore. Uber, Lyft, taxis, call a friend, etc.
Drunk drivers, Run from scene. Juries that are sympathetic to drunks because many have driven drunk on occasion. Limited punishment. Limited consequences.

Don't know if it's a local thing here but I see a lot of inside lane crossers in curves. And they don't cross back, they'll barely miss you while looking you in the eye. There's a blind curve near my house, seems like the majority take the inside lane almost to the curb. Horns and brakes all day.
It’s kind of a blessing in disguise. A good friend of mine got into an accident in a scenario similar to yours. Was injured, but not in a catastrophic way. After the lawyers did their thing, he received a payout that basically allowed him to retire at 30 years of age. Long story short, keep an eye out for opportunities like this.
This is very true. Jails are full of regular people who drink and drive. Stereotyping all Texans as cowboys who drink and drive is nonsense.sorry rodeo boss I meant this for the other you know what.
I’m assuming you’re from San Antonio. YOU know these roads. Someone who’s new here or has not driven in a familiar area can get easily confused. Y’all have zero empathy
I’m going out on a limb but I would guess drinking and driving
I hear you, but it is to common for ALL of them to be alcohol related.
Cultural relationship with alcohol
I wish I could tell you otherwise but no, a majority are drunk and/or high. I’m sure several are people driving when overly tired, whose symptoms can match being intoxicated.
You misunderestimate how common drunk driving is. They have electronic signs dedicated to warning people about it.
I'd say 70/30 alcohol / old age

You don't drive the wrong way on a road without having your abilities impaired through alcohol, drugs, age, or sleep depravation.

I also assume confusion. I'm from another state. The roads here are completely different! There are plenty of areas without proper signage.

Driving in this city is awful. Every single day I catch someone doing something stupid on my dash cam. I should start uploading all these videos.
I can send you the link to my google drive if you want to make a compilation.
I recorded about 3 things today alone. I am gonna get my SD card from my camera tomorrow.
You should upload them.i recommend you submit them to dashcam lessons on YouTube. Just be on top of your defensive driving and you’ll be fine. Stay safe out there.
r/idiotsincars
You should post those on reddit. On this sub!
Post them up. It’ll be cathartic to see I’m not alone in my daily commute of near misses driving in this city.
You must have a lot of time on your hands
Nah man modern cameras dont need you to really do much
I drive/travel a lot for work but it doesn't take much time to pull out an SD card and transfer the videos to my PC and upload them somewhere.

I just saw it happen today on Ingram. Some dick head went around another vehicle the wrong way on the bridge by VIA.

I agree with this. A combination of a deep seated stupidity and a undue sense of entitlement. This town is ripe with both.
Friday at midnight = driving under influence. Not the good influence. Lots of drivers are dumb even when sober ..
Yall make me want to get a dash cam now

Funny enough, the one time my vehicle has been broken into here, one of the only things *not* taken was my dash cam.
That’s interesting. I wonder why? Glad they didn’t for your sake.

Well, at least they correctly identified themselves as a hazard.

In this city? I used to live in Dallas and there was a wrong way accident almost every weekend
Drunk drivers, Run from scene. Juries that are sympathetic to drunks because many have driven drunk on occasion. Limited punishment. Limited consequences.
Corvette drivers are idiots
Because drunk driving and they have their heads up their azzes

Bad signage, confusing roads, inadequate lighting, age, drinking, inexperience. There you go
Or people are just really dumb here.
Assume everyone on the road is drunk after sunset.
you ain't seen nothing yet - just wait until fiesta. let the games begin.
Old folks, alcohol, and idiots.
Transplants don’t know how to use the frontage road
Drivers make mistakes Not unique to San Antonio
Need a dashcam in this city almost as much as you do in isolated parts of Siberia

TexasCowboys sure love to drink and drive.
Why you gotta dump on cowboys? Plenty of other types of people drink and drive. That’s not something unique to cowboys.
This is very true. Jails are full of regular people who drink and drive. Stereotyping all Texans as cowboys who drink and drive is nonsense.sorry rodeo boss I meant this for the other you know what.
Where do you get your information?
Becuase of all the fucking construction
I do a ton of driving for work, and the construction here is beyond horrid, but it's not ONCE caused me to drive against traffic.
I’m assuming you’re from San Antonio. YOU know these roads. Someone who’s new here or has not driven in a familiar area can get easily confused. Y’all have zero empathy
Actually I'm not a native. Even in unfamiliar areas I can easily avoid going the wrong way by observing traffic and signs.
