A girl I went to high school with has a name that’s a very common first and last name but has a ton of different spellings. For the sake of this story, let’s say it’s Gayle. She married a guy with the last name Gail and now she’s Gayle Gail. I couldn’t believe she changed her last name.
And kudos to Miranda for that move because I myself am very traditional and even I wouldn’t give my child someone else’s last name - unless I were married to that person because then that’d be my last name too, of course. I’ve always wondered why it’s the 2000s and single women would still want their kid to have another person’s last name?
The tradition for unmarried mothers was actually always to give the child the mother's last name.
Miranda Hobbes naming him Brady Hobbes was the traditional thing to do.
I mean most people give take their husband’s name especially if they have children together. I get that Miranda is self centered and unwilling to waiver though.
Whenever a woman is established in a practice, such as a lawyer or doctor, it’s not uncommon for them to keep their maiden name as it’s on all of their degrees/certifications and how clients know them.
It’s not a sexist tradition, it’s how paternity has been established traditionally. Giving birth clearly establishes maternity, signing the birth certificate and having the last name establishes paternity.
It’s always Miranda’s way or nothing. It’s ridiculous that Miranda is the only one whose opinion matters and everyone has to work around her. I’m not even a Steve fan, but Miranda is too controlling .
Because it’s a way for her to say she gave him Steve’s name without putting it in the place that’s traditionally reserved for the father’s name. Miranda will do anything to skirt tradition, as seen by her negotiating the baptismal rite.
I wouldn’t say it’s self centered. She’s a lawyer who would have to change her name on her license etc. she’s still honoring Steve with naming him Brady.
Even then, she wasn't traditional. She proposed to him and they got married in a community garden.
Also, just because someone isn't traditional doesn't mean they don't do or enjoy traditional things on occasion.
Such a missed opportunity to not have Carrie make a joke about it – she loves wordplay! Makes me wonder if maybe they hadn't intended Aiden's character to become as big a part of the show as he did?
this is exactly what i think of when i think about the fact that carrie and aidan never worked and never will work. i like to think it’s a little easter egg thrown in there
I read that the first time they were dating, his character was not intended to come back for them to get back together in season 3 (?) or 4. But because he was such a fan favorite, they winded up bringing him back
I have a theory someone named him after their favorite gay porn star (especially since his real name is Aiden Brady!!!) - that’s too much of a coincidence imho: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aiden_Shaw
It bugs me as much as the name Andie Anderson bugs me in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. It just feels like they weren’t even trying. 😂
I always loved that 😭 and for his name to be Benjamin Barry - feels like a cartoon or a magazine or something. So cute
And the guys name was Benjamin Barry! 😂
Andy Anderson, pro skater: Am I a joke to you?
Phillip Phillips would like to say something…
Omg I forgot about him. That had to be a gimmick, right?!
I like to think his parents really named him that. 😂

Just promise us this isn’t going to be the new “Is his name Brady Brady?”
This always bugs me because....Miranda says his name is Brady Hobbes. And Miranda isn't traditional.

Probably a holdover from patriarchy.
The tradition for unmarried mothers was actually always to give the child the mother's last name. Miranda Hobbes naming him Brady Hobbes was the traditional thing to do.
She says his name is Brady Hobbes, but then proceeds to marry Steve later.
With no mention of changing her or Brady’s name and no reason to think she would.
That’s all fine and good, but it is disrespectful to Steve as Brady’s father
Why should Brady take Steve’s name and not Miranda’s if not for a sexist tradition?
It’s not a sexist tradition, it’s how paternity has been established traditionally. Giving birth clearly establishes maternity, signing the birth certificate and having the last name establishes paternity.
...and how is that not sexist?
Only DNA test can truly establish paternity.
Nah it's disrespectful of him not to take her and HIS KIDS name 🤷
It’s always Miranda’s way or nothing. It’s ridiculous that Miranda is the only one whose opinion matters and everyone has to work around her. I’m not even a Steve fan, but Miranda is too controlling .
Then please choose another example for your point. Wanting to strengthen patriarchy is not the way.
How? She gave Steve's last name as the name of the child 🙄
Because it’s a way for her to say she gave him Steve’s name without putting it in the place that’s traditionally reserved for the father’s name. Miranda will do anything to skirt tradition, as seen by her negotiating the baptismal rite.
...and Steve didn't seem to have a problem with the naming of the child. If it's good for him, why is it not good for you?
I wouldn’t say it’s self centered. She’s a lawyer who would have to change her name on her license etc. she’s still honoring Steve with naming him Brady.
It’s a cop out as far as I’m concerned with Brady. Idc what Miranda does with her own name.
Even then, she wasn't traditional. She proposed to him and they got married in a community garden. Also, just because someone isn't traditional doesn't mean they don't do or enjoy traditional things on occasion.
Came to see this comment 😅
To me he was always Brady Hobbes Brady.
Take my angry upvote
I think this every time I rewatch.
Such a missed opportunity to not have Carrie make a joke about it – she loves wordplay! Makes me wonder if maybe they hadn't intended Aiden's character to become as big a part of the show as he did?
"And I couldn't help but wonder, by losing half of my name was I losing half of myself????"
this is exactly what i think of when i think about the fact that carrie and aidan never worked and never will work. i like to think it’s a little easter egg thrown in there
Nice.
Nailed it!
On spot 👌
I read that the first time they were dating, his character was not intended to come back for them to get back together in season 3 (?) or 4. But because he was such a fan favorite, they winded up bringing him back
"He was Aiden Shaw, but I was never sure about Aiden"
never thought of that, but yes, wtf???😂
It's cool because the Y is silent.
“I just ran into Silent Y in the bathroom, and PS the 80s are back.”
That always bugged me too. Sloppy.

It's lazy writing!
