I love it! That second picture is a beauty. What sort of camera was it out of curiosity? I really like the feel/grain of the images.

pumpkin-gnome22

it was seriously just a cheap one from target!!

Insomniac_80

Digital, or film?

pumpkin-gnome22

film

ben_bliksem

If you're looking for the "no screen" experience this can work: https://www.campsnapphoto.com/

sid2k

+1 also curious to know

Environmental-Joke19

Oh I love this idea!! Edit: meant to reply to the main thread 🙃

NomiMalonee

I’ve gotten into film photography as well in the last few years. With a finite amount of shots you’re more likely to think and assess your surroundings and contemplate what it is you actually want to photograph, at least that’s been my experience. These photos are great. The photos capture a relaxing vacation perfectly. I’m glad you had a great time and picked up a new hobby OP

LilAssG

Having grown up relatively poor with film cameras, before digital, the price of the film itself, then getting it developed, and having a limited number of shots (usually 24), yeah, you chose your pictures carefully and treasured the ones that really worked out. Now with my phone I just blast away and there are literally too many pictures to every really look at them all, and they are so cheap that there isn't nearly the same feeling of triumph at getting a good picture. It's like, oh yeah I have 20 of that same picture from slightly different angles. Not sure which is technically the best one cause I can't be arsed to look at each one closely enough to delete the other 19. Is film photography making a comeback? I had no idea but I'm glad that people still do it.

PicardsFish

The Gorge! I've taken that alternative route up to Cloudsplitter to Indian Staircase many times! I hope you enjoyed it.

tylieb

yes I was like aw red river gorge I miss you so much

pumpkin-gnome22

it was amazing! bring a disposable next time :)

Anything-Happy

The dog has stolen all of your upvotes. As (s)he should.

pumpkin-gnome22

LITERALLY!! it was some random dog😂 he was so precious

schlucks

You can use "they" as a singular gender-neutral pronoun

ineedtoleave555

I don't know why you've been down voted for this. In this context, "they" would be correct grammar and is cleaner/flows easier than "(s)he". People are weird, aren't they?

GhostSC1

Lovely photos. Film captures the mid tones and highlights so much better

letscott

I bought a Kodak ektar h35 and absolutely love buying film and getting it developed to see what was shot lol no light meter no composition just snap and roll the dice it’s been great

pro_rege_semper

No light meter? I wonder why not?

letscott

Just another thing to carry and don’t like my pockets bulging also the ektar h35 doesn’t come with a light meter it’s pretty simple actually

pro_rege_semper

That's interesting. I used to use a Pentax K1000, which was a pretty sweet 35mm camera, with a basic light meter.

letscott

Oh the k1000 is much much nicer than the Kodak h35. You’re thinking this is a SLR 35mm these ektar h35s are borderline disposable cameras

pro_rege_semper

Ah,.I see. Like a Diana or something.

letscott

I think kodak saw how successful lomo reusable film cameras were and figured they’d try to get a slice of the game

letscott

petethecanuck

Living your best live like it's 1994!

accidentalciso

Yes!! I have an old digital camera that I bought about 10 years ago from a friend that still takes great photos. It’s a compact point and shoot, not a big bulky DSLR. Works great for this exact purpose! I prefer the digital over a disposable film camera because it gives me better control over the exposure and I can feel more confident that I’m getting what I want out of it. It is nice to be able to leave my phone behind and still get photos and enjoy the activity more fully. Great shots!

ACornACorne

I just bought a disposable camera as well. Nostalgic. I’ll be moving across the country in two months and decided to snap pictures of time with family and friends during my time left until I leave. Can’t wait to develop the film.

ky-ja-ky

Looks like rrg!

pumpkin-gnome22

it was!!

TrustButVerifyEng

My thought as well! Go there every year with the fam.

pro_rege_semper

I think film cameras are better for hiking trips anyway. That way you're not using the phone battery in case of an emergency.

etcetcere

I like it more. We cherish things more when they're not in excess

naked_nomad

Have a Fuji digital point and shoot camera that is about ten years old and a Sony handycam that is almost as old that I use. People rely on their phones to much these days.

Animated_Astronaut

Shot in the dark, upstate New York?

sam-the-sasquatch

It's definitely Red River Gorge in Kentucky, but Upstate New York would have been a pretty good guess. The pics make me nostalgic because they remind me of childhood camp up there. Even the campfire chairs are identical.

pumpkin-gnome22

you got it! rrg :)

Animated_Astronaut

It's funny it looks just like Thatcher park

sadd1son

and why was i sitting here thinking it was northern georgia/alabama 😂

Animated_Astronaut

It's Appalachian for sure, but thats a long stretch of mountains partner 🤠 😊

sadd1son

certainly. reminds me of a place called ‘cloudland canyon’ ive camped

pumpkin-gnome22

it was red river gorge kentucky!

Animated_Astronaut

Beautiful. We got some places out near Ithaca that look like this. Nice pictures!

MyRealestName

Was my thought too. Then again, I live on the northeast so ofc I jump to that

ManagerPug

I did this with a disposable camera when i went to the white mountains. Very fun and nostalgic🥰

LetLaceyBeLacey

That looks like a lovely, relaxing, refreshing adventure. I feel calm just looking at the photos. Fun idea!

petalsky

I just love these, they look absolutely magical!

Obvious-Attitude-421

Okay this was pre-camera phone but I took a trip out west to Montana and Wyoming (Yellowstone) and brought a disposable camera that was specialized to capture vista type pics as that's what I expected to see We were camping in Yellowstone and took an early morning drive and a bunch of cars were pulled off to the side which usually meant an animal sighting. Sure enough there was a grizzly bear up on a hill alongside the road Naturally I wanted a shot but as my camera was specialized for vista pics, I couldn't get the bear in focus without getting dangerously close When I got back I had to explain to everyone that "that black rock looking thing up on the hill? That's actually a grizzly. My camera would only take vista pics" The tradeoff wasn't worth it for the pic I could've gotten

akaleilou

God nothing compares to that nice haze disposables produce.

Spiritual-Bee-2319

I have a cheap camera I got from my sister that I love to bring on trips. The picture quality is quite good and I love bringing that places and it has limited battery so it’s great to be mindful of that. It was great in Hawaii. Now on trips I bring my portable art supplies and just paint and journal after. Keep doing this bc it’s so nice and lets you appreciate the moments

Organic-Operation-17

Pretty pics but a disposable camera is not enviornmentally friendly and therefore not “simple”

Baskets_GM

Came here to say this. Simple living has to go hand in hand with sustainable living. For me felt like a next step.

schlucks

living isnt environmentally friendly

webbhare1

It can be

Character_Eye7866

I understand your POV for sure but it’s tough to find a truly eco-friendly alternative. Maybe impossible. Most modern cameras use plastic and any camera that uses film isn’t sustainable either. The closest thing would probably be to find a used digital camera and shoot w that until it breaks.

slimstitch

I have a digital camera I've had since 2010. Still works, never broken, and still takes amazing pictures. It's not a fancy brand either, just a discount Medion one. I even fell on it when I slipped on a glacier in Iceland and nothing happened to it. And they can be repaired, but most people just flat out don't bother even repairing their stuff anymore.

Character_Eye7866

That’s awesome! This is the way.

Rare_Background8891

Where’d you get it developed? We bought my kid a disposable underwater camera for snorkeling and none of the drugstore photo departments around us will process it.

lexi_ladonna

There are places you can mail them in, can find them online. That’s what I did with a bunch of old film I found in a box in my closet

pumpkin-gnome22

i use indisposable! you get the exposures back on your phone and then you can print them yourself

Decent_Flow140

Any Walgreens around? They do it.

Rare_Background8891

I tried. They won’t.

Decent_Flow140

That’s weird, their website says every Walgreens with a photo center takes film, and the one by me definitely does! Edit: sorry, I missed the part where you said it was a disposable. The website says every Walgreens with a photo center takes 35mm film, but not all of them take disposables. There are some mail-in services available though!

4SeasonWahine

I have an instax and about 50% of my photos are useable because the focus is shit but even the blurry ones have SO MUCH CHARACTER. I have little piles of cute Polaroids all over my house 😂

HellsHottestHalftime

Get yourself a satellite phone for emergencies tho

pumpkin-gnome22

i was with 2 other people with phones but yes i should in case

HellsHottestHalftime

That’s alright then as long as they’ve got signal and you won’t be separated from the group

moneyprobs101

My partner and I did this a few years back. We had an amazing time, and those memories are ones I will never forget.

thirdshuttt

immediately recognized the gorge. Best place on Earth.

AmarissaBhaneboar

Jesus, this thing takes better pictures than my phone camera. Something about the way it focuses just looks more natural and so much better. It just looks so much less flat.

StrixCZ

+1 for trying to get rid of phone addiction but disposable anything is a bad idea IMHO - just get a proper film camera if you don't want it to have a screen (or the Camp Snap option someone mentioned below). Single use things are just terrible sustainability-wise.

pumpkin-gnome22

i mentioned in a comment on the post about how i’m saving up for a film camera. i understand they’re bad sustainability wise but the goal was to live simply without the nonsense of being tied to a phone. i’m still new to this lifestyle so im making baby steps :)

StrixCZ

You can buy (used) film camera (even SLR) for peanuts these days (could be even about the same price as the disposable one if you're lucky). I love my DSLR so I couldn't imagine switching back to analog myself (one of the reasons being that I got into bird photography where I'd easily go through a film strip in a minute - you kind of need to shoot in high speed burst mode to get decent shots of moving birds, LOL) but photography is a great hobby, one way or another - so cheers to that! :)

lulu91car

Great idea!

Think-Horse83

i was so amazed to find out trhey still sell polaroid cameras. i got one for me and my kid. my kid got super excited and he still is for a year now. they are not the best quality photos but carry the best memories

pumpkin-gnome22

commenting for clarity: i decided to do a disposable so i could live without the chaos of a phone and the toxicity it brings me. i understand disposable cameras aren’t the most friendly thing for the earth, but we all start somewhere with our simple living journey. the goal is to save up for a more sustainable option. i hope you can all understand my point :)

onairmastering

Yep, we need more plastic waste. I went the opposite, everything with the phone, just one device made of Metal that works and way less plastic waste.

MacabreFox

I hope you've never bought anything plastic in your life otherwise judging the OP from your high horse is going to look really stupid.

slimstitch

There's a perfectly valid and accessible alternative that doesn't go in the trash right after. And disposable cameras pollute so much more beyond just the plastic. Can you really blame someone for being against something that's straight up designed to be thrown in the trash?

MacabreFox

I think OP just didn't want to spend time on their phone during the trip and that's understandable. Maybe they couldn't afford to spring for a digital camera, I don't know their life. It just seems stupid to come in the comments and chide them for buying something when we've probably ALL bought useless shit at some point in our lives. No one here is blameless, I guarantee it. This isn't the "buy it for life" sub so just let it be.

slimstitch

You can get used digital cameras for cheap or even Polaroid cameras where it's just the film you have to replace each time. We have all bought stupid stuff throughout life, but isn't part of simple living making more intentional life choices?

Decent_Flow140

Sometimes people need a one-time reset.

slimstitch

OP wrote "this will be a new tradition". The intent isn't one-time.

Decent_Flow140

Okay fine, a once-a-year reset

slimstitch

Why once a year?

Decent_Flow140

I dunno I was just guessing. Once you start doing something multiple times a year I don’t really think of that as a tradition, then it’s just a thing you like to do.

onairmastering

Sure.

slimstitch

Yeah this is just unnecessary waste at everyone's expense. There's lots of reusable alternatives to disposable cameras, such as digital cameras or even Polaroid style cameras. It's simple for sure, just not how OP intended. Just because it's not digital doesn't mean it's right.

onairmastering

I would use a Polaroid any time! at least the freakin' camera is not disposable and ends up in a river in India.

webbhare1

I mean there’s nothing simple about a film camera, and it certainly isn’t environment friendly either lol Photos look cool and more unique tho, maybe I’ll give you that.

drewj2017

Simple living =/= environmentally friendly.

webbhare1

ok drew, relax The very first words of my comment were specifically about how a disposable camera isn't simple compared to a phone...

ghastkill

Is it simple and more sustainable if you need to have the film processed which is a heavy and quite toxic process? It would be better to have a reusable film camera, at least then you’re not dealing in a load of single use plastic and just getting the film developed.

drewj2017

These are awesome! This area looks super familiar, where were you at, if you don't me asking? :)

pumpkin-gnome22

Replying to onairmastering...red river gorge kentucky

downtherabbbithole

I remember those! I did not know they were still being made.

next2021

How much to develop?

pumpkin-gnome22

$20

next2021

Thanks! I can’t find place that does it

Jinglemoon

Looks like a nice trip back to 1990.

TaylorHilgard

Is this Red River Gorge?

pumpkin-gnome22

yes!

TaylorHilgard

I used to backpack there a lot. I sensed it was RRG from the photos. I miss it there!

beeb9

I recently invested in a digicam for the same reason 🥰 ive already enjoyed capturing through it! Just hits different. Beautiful photos by the way

pumpkin-gnome22

where do you get one of those?

beeb9

I got it on ebay! Its a Nikon p5000 from 2007. Cost 110 cad

sirkidd2003

Yo, is this Red River Gorge?!

pumpkin-gnome22

sure is

marydotjpeg

omg I love this! :)

Helpful_Road8907

That's so nice! I'm going to get one as well. I hate my phone.

azjd14

What a fantastic idea. Makes you think about your shots before taking them. Your pics turned out great!

sid2k

!remindme 1 week

sid2k

these pics are GREAT!

wediealone

I love this idea and love these pictures!!

c-b8

Was considering revisiting disposable cameras again - where do you get them developed? Love this :)

pumpkin-gnome22

indisposable!
