I was talking to my wife recently that R9 was also called “Ronaldinho” in Brazil when he was younger. You can even find games where he wore a jersey with Ronaldinho written in the back. So for a while we had two Ronaldinhos in the national squad, until R9 became “Ronaldo”
And we had a goalkeeper called Ronaldo.
We could have a team with Ronaldo, Ronaldão, Ronaldinho Gaúcho and Ronaldinho, later known as Ronaldo Gordo (or Fenômeno).
Because there was another Ronaldo in Brazil team at the time. Then they adapted and it was Ronaldao, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. Big Ronaldo, Ronaldo and Little Ronaldo.
Yes, but everyone in Brazil still called Ronaldo as Ronaldinho.
Things started to change when Ronaldinho Gaucho began to make a name for himself at Barcelona.
Gotcha. I was a big fan of Brazil from the outside in that era (98 to probably 2012 ish) and by that '02 WC I was already calling him Ronaldo as I remember
Again, this is more of a Brazilian thing going on within the country among brazilians and the brazilian commentators. I am pretty sure international commentators called him "Ronaldo" because that what was written on his jersey
"inho" is a diminutive, an affectionate nickname. The name on his jersey was Ronaldo but people often called him Ronaldinho, especially when he was just a teen tearing it up at Cruzeiro. I think it makes sense that he wouldn't be called that in countries where that isn't the nicknaming norm
I miss the time when brasilian NT had cracks like this, even Neymar.. It's lucky for us that Brasil is not at their strongest right now but it just feels so wrong
Ronaldinho Gaúcho was 19 and still playing in Brazil when he scored this goal.
Today Endrick can't be a starter at 18 because they have to "take it easy" with him, even though Endrick has been a starter at Palmeiras for more than a year. It will be the same with Estevão, who is even older than Yamal for example. Fuck Raphinha, it's Estevão + Savio as right winger options.
And I say this because I see this problem in the youth teams of Atlético Mineiro (the Brazilian club that I support). There is a culture in Brazil of favoring age over talent.
We also can't call up players who play in Brazil (and not even in smaller European teams), because Brazilians think our league is complete garbage. Meanwhile we see Uruguay playing with De La Cruz, Arrascaeta and Vina (who is a reserve at Flamengo) and Colombia with half the team made up of players from the Brasileirão.
We could have had Paulinho (Atlético Mineiro), who last season made 61 appearances, scored 32 goals and made 8 assists, but we preferred to call Martinelli, who for Arsenal made 44 appearances, scored 8 goals and made 5 assists.
It's quite possible that we'll see Colombia, with players who play in the Brasileirão, destroying Brazil. It will be philosophical.
That's actually a good point about Colombia that I didn't think of.
They're really still have James as one of their main players even though he is a benchwarmer for São Paulo and Arias starting at midfield who plays for the last placed team in our league.
I feel that James is an exception because he’s always done much better for Colombia than any team he played at (not saying he was bad necessarily, just much better with the national team)
>We could have had Paulinho (Atlético Mineiro), who last season made 61 appearances, scored 32 goals and made 8 assists
One of the biggest flops ever in Bundesliga, by your logic Brazil should call Gabigol who scored over 150 goals since 2019 but was garbage in Europe.
>because Brazilians think our league is complete garbage
Nobody give a shit on this shit tier level Brasileirao where flops from europe became elite in a low level competition, Marcelo don't even played good in Greek League farmers but is one of the bests in Brazil
The level of dedication for Marcelo at Fluminense is miles away from Olympiacos.
So the Premier League might be a shit league, since bums like Andreas Pereira and Willian are good players there and were horrible here less than 3 years ago
>Marcelo don't even played good in Greek League farmers but is one of the bests in Brazil
Boa, por esse parâmetro o Rodinei era um lixo no Flamengo e é pica na liga grega, deve ser melhor que o Marcelo!!!
E que o Rafinha por sinal.
The amount of talent from Brazil in the 1994-2006 period is probably never happening again. Just an insanely long list of skillful, creative and technical players.
I’m optimistic about the future with guys like Endrick, Vini, Rodrygo, etc.
> The amount of talent from Brazil in the 1994-2006 period is probably never happening again. Just an insanely long list of skillful, creative and technical players.
Happened before (58-72) and again (80-86, despite being trophyless), we have too many people who like football, it will happen again, sooner or later
I would say it was one period of insane talent from 58 to 86.
74’s squad had Piazza, Jairzinho, Rivellino, Ademir da Guia, Nelinho, and Luís Pereira.
78’s squad had Nelinho, Reinaldo, Zico, Dirceu, Cerezo, Rivellino, and Roberto Dinamite.
Brazil placed 4th and 3rd, respectively.
Amazing talent, specially 78’s squad.
Joining him to hug him was Cafu, R9 and Rivaldo
1997 and 1999 Copa America winning squads of Brazil were pretty crazy, 97 had prime Romário and Ronaldo together
Well, Romario was cut off because of a injury and Ronaldo had an epiletic seizures the night before the final. Also, France had a guy named Zidane in their squad.
This was in 1999 Copa America
Also known as the tournament where Palermo missed 3 penalties and Argentinean narrator hilariously prayed during [Rivaldo's free kick](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JgOJ8Al3rs&t=60s) which helped Brazil eliminate Argentina 2-1
It was "me quiero matar". That was Walter Nelson, uruguayan-argentinian commentator.
The one for this Copa was Marcelo Araujo, iconic narrator of the 90s.
Who is the commentator and is he the same as this guy:
[Corinthians 2x2 Real Madrid - Mundial Fifa 2000 (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7iED4cSfvc)
I remember watching this on Eurosport and thinking ‘another flair player off the Brazil production line’ little did I know that would be an understatement 😂
I didn’t recognise him when he was at PSG as he’d grown his hair by then!
“Olha o que ele fez, olha o que ele fez, olha o que ele fez...GOOOOOOOOOOL”
Prime Galvão Bueno commentary is another level, the nostalgia is too much. I wish they took him from that youtube channel stream and put it back on work, there is no one at his level right now.
The presence of mind for the second touch, knowing it will be soft enough to not go out of bounds yet close enough that the goalie can’t commit = marvelous
Wonder what the football landscape would look like if utd had signed him instead of Barca?
Where would Ronaldo have gone? And would he have developed to be the player he is today?
Eh, I don't think he would have much future at United.
Ferguson was a very strict coach and Dinho had lots of issues with discipline. He himself said many times it's the only way he knows how to live and play.
So there's "some" chance they Ferguson would straighten him up and his career at the top would last longer, but it's far more likely that he gets permanently benched for partying all the time.
IIRC United wanted to sign both and money was never a problem for them. Maybe Ronaldo would've went to Arsenal if Ferguson decided that he doesn't need them both, but yeah they were different prospects at different stages in their career so I'd bet both of them would be signed.

Wow what a first goal, mental
First goal for Barcelona wasn't bad either.
[Context](https://youtu.be/z9TpAIe31pg?feature=shared)
Wasn’t that at 1:00am or something?
Yes! He said that midnight was his hours (like he is used to do greater things at this time)
I can totally believe that
lol, Roberto Carlos, Cafu, Rivaldo, R9 and Ronaldinho. Insane squad.
I was talking to my wife recently that R9 was also called “Ronaldinho” in Brazil when he was younger. You can even find games where he wore a jersey with Ronaldinho written in the back. So for a while we had two Ronaldinhos in the national squad, until R9 became “Ronaldo”
He wad a center back known as Ronaldão, hence why Ronaldo Fenômeno got that name. Ronaldinho was actually Ronaldinho Gaúcho, to differentiate from R9.
6 year old me was so confused when they decided to split the Ronaldinhos
And we had a goalkeeper called Ronaldo. We could have a team with Ronaldo, Ronaldão, Ronaldinho Gaúcho and Ronaldinho, later known as Ronaldo Gordo (or Fenômeno).
Ronaldo only became Ronaldo in Brazil after the 2002 WC, Galvão even called him Ronaldinho when calling his goals on the final
Because there was another Ronaldo in Brazil team at the time. Then they adapted and it was Ronaldao, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. Big Ronaldo, Ronaldo and Little Ronaldo.
In my mind R9 will always be “Ronaldinho” because that was what he was called when I was a kid during the 2002 World Cup.
By the time Ronaldinho debut in 1999, Ronaldo was already Ronaldo for quite some time
[Are you sure about that?](https://youtu.be/Gr4GbOhumLU?si=uFyPo_ayVjZTQsFl)
Can't speak about in Brazil but everywhere else R9 was Ronaldo. Nobody in Italy reffered to him as Ronaldinho when he came to Inter
maybe that's why the original commenter said "was also called Ronaldinho in Brazil" instead of "in the whole world/in Italy"
The back of his shirt says Ronaldo in that clip no?
Yes, but everyone in Brazil still called Ronaldo as Ronaldinho. Things started to change when Ronaldinho Gaucho began to make a name for himself at Barcelona.
Gotcha. I was a big fan of Brazil from the outside in that era (98 to probably 2012 ish) and by that '02 WC I was already calling him Ronaldo as I remember

Wild, I never knew R9 was still being referred to as Ronaldinho in 2002
In Brazil
I may be missing something here since it's obvious he was not
The Brazilian commentator calls him Ronaldinho and I'm not sure if that's also what it says on his jersey
And they have Romario on the bench lmao
Oh god that's mad
He’d made his debut just 4 days earlier in a friendly against Latvia, and scored this beauty just 3 minutes after coming onto the pitch.
I miss the time when brasilian NT had cracks like this, even Neymar.. It's lucky for us that Brasil is not at their strongest right now but it just feels so wrong

Arias plays for the current South American Champion who topped their group this Copa. We're missing him and André so much
I feel that James is an exception because he’s always done much better for Colombia than any team he played at (not saying he was bad necessarily, just much better with the national team)
Not to mention that we have to play as European as possible, remember Danilo and Bruno Guimarães talking shit
Brazil league is very underrated but the talent isn’t.
>We could have had Paulinho (Atlético Mineiro), who last season made 61 appearances, scored 32 goals and made 8 assists One of the biggest flops ever in Bundesliga, by your logic Brazil should call Gabigol who scored over 150 goals since 2019 but was garbage in Europe. >because Brazilians think our league is complete garbage Nobody give a shit on this shit tier level Brasileirao where flops from europe became elite in a low level competition, Marcelo don't even played good in Greek League farmers but is one of the bests in Brazil

I remember this goal. I’m old. Reminds me of Endrick coming on and scoring recently. Ronaldinho was a joy to watch.
Joga bonito
I have never seen Ronaldinho with short hair before, I think.
When Venezuela was a joke and Brazil had like 6 of the best 10 players in the world in their squad.
Joining him to hug him was Cafu, R9 and Rivaldo 1997 and 1999 Copa America winning squads of Brazil were pretty crazy, 97 had prime Romário and Ronaldo together
Still mind boggling how this squad didn't win the 98 world cup. Should have been 3 straight wins from 94 to 02.
If people knew what happened in 1998 they would be nauseated...
One of the first copypastas in the world's history.
Well, Romario was cut off because of a injury and Ronaldo had an epiletic seizures the night before the final. Also, France had a guy named Zidane in their squad.
Maybe because in the other side was France with a even stronger squad???
It’s a Brazilian copy pasta lol
>When Venezuela was a joke Somethings never change.

hahahahaha I didnt know that *Padre nuestro que está en el cielo... gol de Brasil* 🤣🤣
No way he was praying kkkkkk, you could hear and feel the frustration in his voice, damn
Lol is this the same dude who said "Te quiero matar Adriano" in 2004 ?
It was "me quiero matar". That was Walter Nelson, uruguayan-argentinian commentator. The one for this Copa was Marcelo Araujo, iconic narrator of the 90s.
That celebration also goes really hard. It's like a kid in a candy store. Genuine pure bliss.
Why does 25 years ago look like it was ww2 time
In what sense ? The quality of video is fine right?
Quality is fine I think it’s just that in my head 25 years ago wasn’t too long ago
25 years ago we were in a different century , it's been a while
Who is the commentator and is he the same as this guy: [Corinthians 2x2 Real Madrid - Mundial Fifa 2000 (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7iED4cSfvc)
Galvão Bueno. The one in your link is Luciano do Valle.
[удалено]
luciano do valle has passed away and galvão is retired since the last world cup
Actually Argentina X France was his last event at Globo, but last year he called Brazil X Morroco and three Stock Car races on his YouTube channel.
he\`s coming back for 2026, i'm sure
Unironically the two greatest brazilian sports commentators of all time
Cute celebration
I remember watching this on Eurosport and thinking ‘another flair player off the Brazil production line’ little did I know that would be an understatement 😂 I didn’t recognise him when he was at PSG as he’d grown his hair by then!
Don’t care. I will die on every and all hills. Prime ronaldinho is the greatest player of all time. Not even open to debate anyone.
Id take a prime R9 over a prime Ronaldinho. Just my personal preference But it's very close!
This guy knows.
I'd agree, he made me fall in love with the game. Are there better names? For sure, but for me he's the GOAT.
I personally disagree, but Ronaldinho is so great, I won’t challenge your opinion.
[удалено]
Why you debating the man :(
Well if we look at the span of approximately 3 seconds in one particular match, I scored a belter last weekend.
Chelsea supporter here, Papiss Cisse is the correct answer
“Olha o que ele fez, olha o que ele fez, olha o que ele fez...GOOOOOOOOOOL” Prime Galvão Bueno commentary is another level, the nostalgia is too much. I wish they took him from that youtube channel stream and put it back on work, there is no one at his level right now.
The sombrero and the shot are nice and all, but that slight second touch is absolutely marvelous, simply perfect.
I always liked the name “Ronaldinho Gaúcho”
God that era of Brazil. Legends.
Those times when all SA teams would put 5+ goals past Venezuela are gone
TIL that it's pronounced Gah-oosh
Gah-oosho
The presence of mind for the second touch, knowing it will be soft enough to not go out of bounds yet close enough that the goalie can’t commit = marvelous
The only way is vibes
That 2nd touch
he's so happy!
I wish I had access to live tv streams during the days of short hair Ronaldinhos and haired Iniestas.
Look at this hat-trick, Ronaldinho was the best of his era
Wonder what the football landscape would look like if utd had signed him instead of Barca? Where would Ronaldo have gone? And would he have developed to be the player he is today?
