I have one rifle, one pcc, and one handgun that are built for anything serious. Literally everything else I own is suboptimal somehow because it's funner that way, and for some reason that seems to be kinda unique.
I own 3, have owned 5 and I completely agree. Bang for buck they aren't it. Especially post rus ammo ban. Even with expensive upgrades, more cumbersome than an AR in almost; mag eject/insert, safety, no* (rare) LTBHO, wide array optics mounts and 70% are dogshit. Charging handle is debatable since AR can be awkward prone, but generally not an issue with LRBHO/bolt release.
But my god, there was something beautiful about my 223 saiga that I unfortunately sold. I didn't even have it fully converted, no muzzle device but all it did was make noise. Like a much louder 22lr. ARs give just a little subtle pop of a recoil. Just to say "hey buddy, I'm here." But that saiga felt more like my PC charger.
Never owned one but I’ve shot and fiddled with a couple. They always felt “off”. My Weatherby feels 10x more solid than any Christensen I’ve ever shot.
It generally depends on who that opinion is coming from. If NIR is important to you, they're bad. But otherwise, for hunting, airsoft, larping, they're generally fine.
Edit: While others have pointed out that Emerson can make stuff that's NIR compliant, there's no guarantee it is. From my understanding, it's about how it comes from the cloth manufacturer. For a while there, it used to be like a Christmas tree. For my own money, I'd buy UR Tactical. Emerson/Krydex being NIR compliant is a bonus IMO.
All the Krydex/Emerson shit I've checked did pretty damn well under IR, better than Crye after your mom washes it with non IR compliant detergent for the first time.

It generally depends on who that opinion is coming from. If NIR is important to you, they're bad. But otherwise, for hunting, airsoft, larping, they're generally fine. Edit: While others have pointed out that Emerson can make stuff that's NIR compliant, there's no guarantee it is. From my understanding, it's about how it comes from the cloth manufacturer. For a while there, it used to be like a Christmas tree. For my own money, I'd buy UR Tactical. Emerson/Krydex being NIR compliant is a bonus IMO.
All the Krydex/Emerson shit I've checked did pretty damn well under IR, better than Crye after your mom washes it with non IR compliant detergent for the first time.

In principle I agree with you, but in practice, I’ve found that it’s never the “boomer veteran with an M14” who you’ll find actually getting out there and training. At best, you’ll find them shooting from a bench rest and lecturing zoomers on why red dots will get them killed in the streets. It’s not 100% of the time, and I’m sure that outliers exist, but I have yet to actually meet the mythical KAC and Crye owner who never actually trains with his kit. As it turns out, people who are willing to drop thousands of dollars on quality kit are also likely to drop some serious coin on ammo and training - who could have guessed?
