To think of the passage through the ages of those little fruits have taken. From the tree to the place they were packed in that bottle. The hands that packed them have long turn to dust but they remain. Then the dark decades they sat on the sea bed. Hearing nothing but the swirling water and the eldritch moans of all those lost souls swirling about in blackness. And then, 70 some years later they are liberated back into the light again. Quite an amazing journey for just a small bottle of olives. And a reminder of how mortal we all are and how insignificant in the indifference of Time...
Overhead; two world wars raged, the rise and fall of the Soviet Union, aviation goes from sail cloth and wooden frames to turbofans and moon landings, and from telegraphy to microprocessors and AI.
If the olives were brought up any later they’d be genetically regrown with personalities to describe the journey. Perhaps they’ll sit on cryo till then.
If anyone is wondering whether these olives still exist, the answer is sadly no. Air started leaking into the bottle after it was brought to the surface, so the liquid inside slowly evaporated and eventually dried up the olives, despite efforts to keep it airtight and preserve it. I'm sure the bottle is still sitting in a storage archive somewhere, but the olives are no more.
There's something weirdly sad about this. Maybe it's the comment up the chain where someone poetically describes the journey of these olives, but it feels like one of those "God, we ruin everything we touch, don't we" sort of things.
It's and Intresting short documentary, hate that even in 1996 they kept saying info that even by then was proven to be incorrect or not accurate.
Still hate that they throw in thay outdated thinking thay Ismay was telling Captain Smith to go faster. And that he was trying to convice him to "end his career with a bang" I mean only one woman who was not that close to them said that she thoght she heard them talking about going faster.
Ismay had no reason to want to get their early, they weren't going for speed they were going for luxury. That is what the point of the Olympic clas was all about.
Not to mention defending Captain Lord of the Californian, I don't believe for a second that he was to far away to render assistance, he was just neglective, and his crew was too.
Apparently olives have gotten smaller
That was my first thought too. I'm guessing it's some effect of being pressurized, reaching equilibrium, then returning to the surface?
Or that they sat around absorbing the liquid for a century.
Both of you sound right.
You can currently buy olives that are huge so it could just be because some olives are huge.
I didn't hear a damn thing.
Different sorts exist

It's been 84 years... The olives had never been used.

Maaannn I cried at the “journey of the olives” comment and now I’m crying again
They didn’t keep the shriveled olives??
Wow! Is that picture taking from a documentary?
[Explorers of the Titanic](https://youtu.be/QbKVvL4Y_CY?si=16rwbQhQtLMmrY_7) It’s from this documentary! Olives are at the 28:40 mark!

I just finished rewatching it. I was arguing with the TV, yet completely enthralled with the visuals.
Thanks!
Bring out the olives!

Dear lord
Massive
I'm sure they're still good.
Did already being full of liquid save it from getting crushed by the water pressure?
Nothing everything was crushed . They have found plenty in tact things, not already in water
Whow ant to eat them?
I don't like olives as it is, deffently wouldn't want to be there if they opened it, bet it smells horrible.
r/eatityoufuckingcoward Also this is a joke lol
Anyone else get futurama vibes? Like the last anchovies episode. Kinda shocked some billionaire didn’t purchase these to put on a pizza
One. Jillion. Dollars.

Where is this image from? I’m having a hard time finding more info.
I wonder if those olives are still edible
What did they taste like? They ate these after recovery, yes?
One of those famous forbidden snacks.
Keep them down there olives are disgusting
Mmm, briny. (Edit because apparently some people don't understand irony. Olives are literally bottled in brine aka salt water)
No, those are eggs Cal laid.
