I used balloons in the past until my master escape Tort crawled through a wood pile, ditched the balloon on a piece of wood and disappeared for a month. So I caution against relying on this!
I think not having a wood pile or anything like that in the yard would help - or at least making it inaccessible by blocking the way. 🙈 Then using a balloon should be fine.
But losing sight of your tort for so long must have been so distressing, I'm sorry that happened.
I have been thinking about a balloon or something because sometimes it’s a game of hide and seek. I literally spent like 20 min searching my living room and small closed porch for my boy. 😂
My tort crawled into a brown paper bag full of yarn that was tipped over on the floor. Lost her for a week. (She doesnt free roam anymore - don’t come for me). Finally found her when I picked up the bag tipped it over all the yarn fell out and put tumbles the tort on top of the balls of yarn. Her shell was so shiny and polished.
I can’t figure out how they get the “antenna” to keep from coming off? I definitely need to do this. I have a Russian who is an escape artist. I urge a role on her once but she scraped it right off while scooting underneath something.
Dunno how this sub got recommended but I hope I can ask a genuine question:
When you let them out in the yard like this, don’t you have to worry about them eating something that was sprayed with pesticides/yard chemicals?
Genuine question, I don't have a turtle but I love seeing the little buds. Are you worried about birds at all??? I'm terrified seeing these sometimes- the little loop at the top... 😨😨😨 Is that a real problem???

I bought a helium tank and tie my tonks up with a balloon when roaming.

Can you glue/attach a GPS or air tag to the turtle for escape location?
I wouldn’t recommend glueing since they can feel it, but you can embed it in like a costume or something of that sort.

It depends where do you live if the area you live in have predators it’s not a great idea to let tortoises alone outside
