There are endless numbers of businesses where the owner makes that much. Could be financial services, real estate, construction, consulting, waste management, literally almost anything. The hard part isnā€™t the idea, the hard part is getting people to keep giving you money.

Bibdjs

IT SPRING 2015 Solutions Engineer 120k (should be bumped to 148k this month)

BlueWaveSkidoodlers

How did you get that role and what do you do on the day to day?

Bibdjs

First industry job/internship i was the only it person at this small business in Oviedo (found on indeed). 10-12/hr Then via the the career centerā€™s information sessions i got another internship at a defense contractor at research parkway doing intranet web design and sharepoint migrations (19/hr). From there my post graduation job (also received from a information session facilitated by the career center) was in a rotational program for a big bank (50k + 5k signon). After my year of rotations I left general IT operations to do professional services consulting for a fintech company (62-77k + 8% bonus) basically help/lead implementation projects/follow on projects for the customers. After 5 years there I joined a payments startup where I own the presales to post sales technical relationship. I demo our product, work with the devs to implement it on the client side and then act as a TAM post go live. I also help some dev tasks as well as we are a small start up like building to rest apis to third parties. Im decently good in python which our application is written in. For my role technical skills are important but since ive been client facing most of my career being able to speak to customers/lead them is huge as well.

Dworkin_Barimen

I work in the electronics industry where customer facing EEs are essential and yet so hard to find. And thus pays very well. We used to laugh that we needed to focus on the bottom third of the graduating class. Smart enough to get the degrees but too many keggers to excel at schoolšŸ˜Š

Bachelors in psych Masters of social work Psychotherapist in group practice $150,000

OppsitsYaYa

Would you recommend getting a bachelors in psych or social work? (I am scared to get a bachelorā€™s in psych due to the job prospects after I graduate but I know I will pursue a masters after)

kenbag

You should definitely do a bachelors in social work. If you do that, you will be eligible to get your masters in social work in just one year instead of two, which saves you lots of money!

Middle-Creepy

I did my undergrad in psych then went straight to my MSW. Deff wont find a high paying job with your psych degree but you can do anything with a MSW!

Professional_Win1535

Iā€™m getting a business bachelors but therapy interest me, is a masters in social work // therapist route open to non psych / social work majors

Middle-Creepy

Yes, youā€™d be surprised how many people go the MSW route with a certain undergrad. One of my good classmates had her undergrad in like wildlife and wanted to be a vet social work :)

Interdisciplinary Studies 2020 Unemployed $0 I had a hard time in college, failed a semester, changed my major a few times, and ended up doing interdisciplinary studies to salvage the credits Iā€™d already taken and mash them into a major so I could at least get a degree. It ended up being a good choice because I was able to go teach English in Korea for a year with just that degree and couldā€™ve stayed longer if I didnā€™t develop some unrelated health issues. Now, I canā€™t find a remote job but canā€™t drive until I get my health (eyes) issue fixed. But I donā€™t have any niche skill set that will help me find a job. I originally wanted to go back for a masters in game design at UCF but decided I really couldnā€™t afford it and Iā€™m glad I didnā€™t do it. Now I plan to move back to Korea asap while hopefully making money from my own remote business ventures/freelancing/whatever and maybe trying to get a scholarship for a masters in Korea that could help me get permanent residency. At this point Iā€™m choosing what I do based on where I want to be.

IT, graduated in 2019. Solutions architect , 170k

BlueWaveSkidoodlers

How did you get that role and what do you do on the day to day?

spellboundedPOGO

So itā€™s a long story but the short of it is: Started in tech support, picked up a few certs, took on some cloud projects at my job that gave me experience with AWS and Azure, got hired by AWS to do cloud support engineering, and then switched internally to a solutions architect. My role is a mix of business and tech. So imagine talking to executive level individuals of a particular enterprise, and giving them presentations on AWS. My goal is to be as informative as possible, without trying to come off as a salesperson.

Civil Engineering Graduated 2019 Nuclear Station Operator \~ $150k

Mindless-Today-7382

Hey, could you talk about your time in school and what civil engineering is like? Would a two year A.S. Degree be enough to get into the field or is a 4 year almost required?

gearhead250gto

Sure. Civil Engineering is like every other engineering major for the first 2 years (i.e. dynamics, statics, mechanics of materials, Calc 1-3, differential equations, physics...). After that you go into your civil engineering specific courses. You then have to choose which disciplines interest you enough to concentrate in (i.e. transportation, water resources, structural, geotech, construction). You should take your FE Exam during your senior year so you can start your career as an EI or EIT. UCF required us to take it (not required to pass it). Then you'll take your PE exam down the road so you can stamp stuff once you get the required experience. The labs are pretty cool once you get to Junior and Senior level classes. Crushing and stretching things is cool. Column buckling was fun. I made my own asphalt core and we did concrete slump tests. There's a lot more too. Are you wanting to know if a 2 year degree is all you need to be a Civil Engineer? If so, the answer is no. There will probably be someone that will mention the states that you can do it in, but it requires a lot of extra years of experience and hoops to jump through....more the exception than the rule. 4 year degree is required to be an actual engineer. You might be able to work at an engineering firm doing engineering work, but you won't have the title or salary of an engineer. You might want to look into getting in as a CAD tech if you want to go the 2 year route. As far as my job as a nuclear operator? Yes, you can definitely get in with a 2 year degree. There are even vocational schools that have 2 year programs specifically for nuclear power. However, there is a lot of competition for nuclear operator jobs and preference is usually for former navy nuke or those with engineering degrees. However, I work with individuals with only a high school diploma and ones with a PhD....and everything in-between. This job is very much a meritocracy for a large part. You will have to take an assessment before interviewing for the job. You can't just BS your way in. The high school grad may do better than the engineer and therefore get the interview over him. There will be many more tests after getting hired and your career has more to do with performance than your educational background. There are a few things that you can't do without a STEM degree, but not much in the grand scheme.
