If you’re living in Canada, you need proof of US citizenship to enter the U.S., and proof of Canadian citizenship to enter Canada.  The U.S. passport card is sufficient for entry into the US by land or sea, but not air. For that you’ll need your passport. For entering Canada as a Canadian living in Canada, you should use your Canadian passport.

If you travel frequently and want just one card to use, this is a perfect use case to apply for Nexus.

You should always enter your home country that you live at with that country’s credential. Otherwise it’s like you are trying to enter as a visitor. I believe passport card is only for land/sea.

I frequently drive across the border which is why i’m getting the card. I’m just not sure if I’m able to get entry back into canada with a US passport card.

Not as a citizen. Use Canadian passport you enter by right and no immigration questions. However if by land use your passport card to enter in the USA. Use your passport card and Canadian birth certificate to get into Canada by right. You can not laminate your birth certificate, but the slip into hockey card cases.

If you have American credentials and use non-American credentials you can be fined a significant amount of money for using non-American credentials.

I cross daily. I use just my passport card from the U.S. I do carry my Canadian passport in case there’s a new person who wants to see citizenship. Canadian drivers license doesn’t prove status to them even though you have to prove status to get one.

This is a great use for NEXUS. You cannot enter Canada with a US Passport (or the card... same idea) as you are a resident. While US/Canadian citizens can enter Canada, if they use a US Passport, they will be evaluated for admissibility as US Citizens as opposed to as Canadians (as I understand it)

You can enter Canada with a US passport book/card as a Canadian as long as you have proof of Canadian citizenship (birth certificate, certificate of citizenship). You don’t even need the passport book or card. A photo ID alongside proof of Canadian citizenship will work to enter Canada by land. When flying, you can fly with a US passport to Canada but if you’re also a Canadian you will have to show your proof of citizenship to CBSA at the airport. Flying to the US as a dual citizen would be about the same in vice versa.

That’s actually not quite true: there is a specific exemption (https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/visit-canada/dual-canadian-citizens-visit-canada.html) for US-Canada dual citizens allowing them to enter Canada with a US passport as long as they carry some evidence of Canadian citizenship. And in fact, once you arrive at the border, Canada can’t exclude a Canadian citizen from the country regardless of ID (which is why the land border is different than flying: they can order an airline not to depart a foreign country with you on board even if they can’t prevent you from entering Canada if you reach Canadian shores). So in principle a US passport/passport card alone is sufficient if you can otherwise demonstrate Canadian citizenship, and you would be evaluated as a Canadian. But it may take a trip to secondary and probably should only be done in a pinch (eg a passport in the process of being renewed). The lack of a wallet-sized Canadian ID (now that BC has discontinued enhanced drivers licenses) is indeed annoying and something I don’t look forward to when I become a Canadian citizen (PRs just have a wallet-sized ID). As you noted, NEXUS is the option.  I think the exemption is tied to the lack of an ETA requirement for Americans. Non-Americans have to apply for an ETA, which would be rejected if the passport holder is also a Canadian citizen. A US passport is on it’s own sufficient to board a flight to Canada, so there’s no practical opportunity for Canada to tell the airline you’re a citizen and can’t board the flight.

As I understand dual citizens can enter Canada with their American credentials as long as they carry some sort of proof of Canadian citizenship (birth certificate etc). Now when you go through inspection you’re already on Canadian soil and they can’t deny entry to their citizens but they can detain you until they verify the truth (some might just let you go cause they don’t care but that’s not technically the law). So I guess technically you could just use your passport card but that would probably make the process annoyingly long every time. And so keeping your birth certificate or certificate of citizenship on you or in your car is an option but I’d personally be uncomfortable with that. Pretty important docs that I’d wanna keep at home. So beyond that you’d need a passport.
