I've also found PCem to be good for 80's and early 90's systems. Neat for running up systems that accurately mimic a 286 or 8086 machine.

PCem hasn't released a new version in a few years. Might want to give 86box a try, which is under very active development (they have *nightly* builds).

[86Box](https://86box.net/) is great, I've been using it for a while and I can nearly emulate the original computer hardware I had in the 90's. It can be a little more challenging than VirtualBox because of the BIOS configuration however. Also, using [Protoweb](https://protoweb.org/) enhances the experience when using Windows 95 or 98.

I need to get out of this sub, all it does is keep reminding me how old I am.

It's an Oracle product, and Oracle likes to change license agreements. Like Sleepy Cat's libdb. Just load Proxmox on an unused machine. Craft Computing and others have some good videos on YT.

shadowtheimpure

Proxmox doesn't really support Windows 9x.

Ahh I missed that. Good to know.

I've used VirtualBox and had a lot of fun with it. Originally, I was hoping that getting Win98 running on a VM would let me get past the "media descriptor byte" issue & read some old 3.5" floppies. No joy with that, but I did get EIGHT operating systems running at once in VirtualBox on Windows 11 (MS-DOS 3.31, MS-DOS 6.22, Windows 1.04, Windows 2.03, Windows 3.0, Windows 3.1, Windows 98, and OS2 Warp 4.0). A total of NINE operating systems concurrently? Why? "Because it was there!"

This also, and others too, I have to. Read the sector, adjust that struct field then rewrite it... with some utility, so you can mount those disks.

On the newer Macs with ARM-CPUs I use "UTM" (a GUI for QEMU and the MacOS's own build-in hypervisor) - it's amazingly fast, even in emulation mode. [https://mac.getutm.app/gallery/](https://mac.getutm.app/gallery/)

Sure, to an extent. I mostly use VB with a unactivated copy XP as a portable development environment for MSVC++ 6 & 7.1 mostly for old game modding.
