A “false flag” is a more general term for when a group with allegiance to group A pretends to have allegiance to A’s enemy B at A’s behest and then commits some atrocity in the name of B to make B less sympathetic.
Related is the concept of a “double agent” which is where a group actually loyal to A pretends to be working for B against A.
