I feel like sheās a victim of the popularity of Gambit and Jubilee. Itās hard to consistently find room for āgirl that blows stuff upā when you have more high profile characters that do mostly the same thing
He had such a brief bump in the early 2000s and then got Decimated and thrown into the background since. The last GenX series should've been 100 more issues because that generation and the Academy X kids need their time to shine.
It's psionic flame. His body doesn't have a mouth, neck, or chest. Almost like his psionic form uses what's left of his organic body as a sort of meat suit. He's a bit bizarre, which was immediately what drew me to the character.
Lots of good characters there they still could use and should. Rockslide, Anole, Surge, Mercury, Dust, Elixir, Prodigy, and Hellion all have a lot of good potential for future stories to tell.
Prodigy is doing pretty well all things considered, he's not like an A lister who's always somewhere but he also tends to show up more than any of the others except for Laura and Pixie, and the Cuckoos if they count.
Surge is about to have a bit of a resurgence, being in the new X-Force book and being one of the first mutants to appear in Peach Momoko's Ultimate X-Men which I'm super excited for as she's my second favorite of this gen behind Laura.
Dust and Elixer got dealt a weird hand in Krakoa, they were important but because of their roles had very limited screentime.
I really hope we see some more popping up, maybe some will be in X-Factor. And NYX seems very focused on their generation so I'm looking forward to it, although I've heard some bad things about the writers.
I feel like Banshee is the mascot of underrated X-Men characters. Heās got a lot going for him, a lot of ongoing potential, but it seems like what writers most like to do with him is kill him in increasingly brutal ways.
I loved what he added back in the 70s. He does randomly pop up here and there in the following decades, but he doesn't get a full run again til Gen X before going back to the sidelines. Especially with the Moira stuff in Krakoa, you'd think someone would be interested in Sean's reaction.
Feels like he is by far the least popular of the "All New All Different" cast that survived more than 5 issues.
All the others became mainstays of the team Banshee feels like a supplemental character. (Like look at 97 they killed him off on screen and no one really reacted)
LOL oh shit youāre so right! Literally didnāt even register until I read this š granted that episode held arguably the most important/heart-wrenching death ever but yeah, totally forgot about olā Banshee also getting smoked
So many major characters died in episode 5. Shaw, Banshee, Moira (I think), Calisto, Madelyn(who very well may have been OUR Jean Grey from Season 5 on if not Season 4), Maybe even Angel who was seen in one of the explosions.
Without even mentioning Gambit and Magneto although Magneto seems to be alive I think we've lost X-men member Magneto.
I really wish these writers would just write new stories with the characters rather than constantly rewriting the past. Admittedly I never read those issues, but that whole huge retcon with Vulcan sounded really dumb to me too \*shrug\*
As a longtime fan, you think "nah Banshee is in a lot of things," but then you realize he just gets trashed a lot lol. To think, he was a main roster dude too...
Pretty good pick when you think about it. A lot of cooler "young" types to pick from but damn he is somehow a mascot for the underrated.
F^#* yeah!! I love Cypher!! Ever since Necrosha when he broke the virus language sick!! At one point a someone made him good at fighting becuase he cause read the movement like a language haha. They didn't keep that though
Dust is cool AF and it's neat that she got a big cameo in Wolverine and the X-Men, IIRC. Dunno' if she'll make it into '97 at all (there's other majors that take priority, like Colossus/Iceman/friggin SHADOWCAT).
I was under the impression she kept getting used in more modern years, but dang I guess not
I recommend his weird and wonderful TV show, but it changes a lot about his character. Still I can think of one change that is a vast improvement from the comics.
Husk's power is absolutely wild, very 90s without being too over the top, plus she's kin with cool boy Cannonball. Prolly my favorite GenXer; wish the last thing I'd heard about her hadn't been the weird Angel thing.
I'm probably like, one of the earth's top 5 Cypher fans, so obviously him, lol. Though I think Krakoa's given him a bit of a push, so maybe he's not as underrated anymore.
Other characters I want to mention are Thunderbird, Karma, the original X-Terminators (Boom-Boom, Rictor, Wiz-Kid, Rusty, Skids), Northstar and Aurora, Frenzy, Doctor Nemesis, Prodigy, and Eye Boy. Some of them probably get the love they deserve in places like this sub, but go underappreciated in the wider world.
Mimic, heās essentially one of the OG X-Men that has so much potential as a character with his powerset and heās been criminally underused. Carey used him well in *X-Men Legacy* albeit briefly, and his *Exiles* counterpart got to be developed, but otherwise heās mostly brought in as a plot device (such as to give 05 Angel his feathered wings back in *Extermination*) or used to make other power mimics look better (such as Synch in *Sins of Sinister*).
Forge. Dudeās Mutant power is actually pretty interesting (at least to me it is) and he also has some magical abilities which is cool (honorable mention is Dazzler but she was one of the playable characters in the arcade game so she has a little more attention)
Hmm... fun question, I have lots.
My first is Jubilee, though thankfully she finally seems to be coming back into the spotlight a bit more which I'm happy about.
After her...
I like Elixir , and I kind of like the resurrected Thunderbird, I'd like to see them do more with him. I always enjoy Forge (very disappointed with the line-up for his new book unfortunately). Banshee and Northstar come to mind. I really enjoyed Tempus at first but she fizzled pretty hard. I could see maybe fixing her up.
The X-Statix group for sure, especially the Orphan.Ā
The whole Gen X crew is my second favorite book so I was really happy to see Chamber up so high in this thread.
I really want to see X-Statix interact with the mainstream X-Men. Doop did, so why not Mr. Sensitive or Dead Girl? It would also be awesome to see the team interact with their revived teammates from Krakoa.
1000% yes! Beak is one of the very few decent mutant parents. Also, Iām pretty sure that Beak and Tempest tied the knot off-panel between Civil War and Krokoa.Ā
Firestar. Saved the world multiple times in multiple books. Originally written to be one of the most powerful mutants on the planet, but the X-Men (Duggan) reduced her to cowering in a corner from Kate whilst holding a gun at her....
My God, thereās too many. I just love all my mutants. I love Madrox, but he got to lead a long running series so I dunno if he counts. Hellion will always be my boy. Iām excited to see more Surge. I think Forge has been misused for the longest time and Iām hoping his X-Force gives my man his swagger back. Iād love to see more Dani Moonstar. Love Monet. I dunno, thereās too many that havenāt had the spotlight in quite sometime.
Forgot to mention Glob
His redemption in new mutants 12 when he went after DOX with Dani and illyana where he revealed his past with his terrible father.
Until recently Synch, but once they finally brought him back writers have acknowledged he's the GOAT.
Jubilee is written terribly and deserves a chance to grow. She's the weakest omega which makes no sense since she was one of the youngest X-Men when she started and had great teachers and mentors. She should be throwing nuclear blast explosions by now.
I really enjoy Rasputin IV, but she's written inconsistently and isn't well fleshed out. I don't think she needs a solo series, just better characterisation where she doesn't flip to being really violent at random (beating Thing when he just asks to talk) or suddenly flying using telepathy when Sinister made lack of flight a conscious weakness of hers.
Wallflower. She was such an interesting character, like, what happens when you are born with a power seen as evil, to literally control others feelings, but you're a very kind person who doesn't want that. My opinion is that she should have survived the decimation, instead of Elixir.
I am a huge fan of the Mimic. Exiles was amazing, I liked his original appearance, enjoyed him in Excalibur, and liked dark X-men. At this rate, I think I got 5-10 years before I see him again
Which is weird because he's so very 90s and much of his backstory is very repetitive with Rachel. (Both being time displaced kids)
But it causes him to get adapted more and Rachel to get left in the dust.
I think Rachel works a lot better on team books than Cable too.
I only really liked Cable when he was paired up with Deadpool.
When we first saw Jean pregnant in 97 I was hoping it would turn out to be Rachel instead of Nathan (I didn't think they'd actually adapt Madelyn Pryor)
True, they couldāve included a lot of characters of colour as part of the First Class cast, like Sunfire or Dust or even Thunderbird and have him be killed be Shaw as a nod to his early death in the comics.
Forge & Cypher are the 2 who I feel are most slept on with regard to potential.
The new X-Force book gives me some hope that this situation will be fixed for Forge.
I find that each of their powers seems to operate very similarly; and if you could frame a problem within the purview of their power, their potential is virtually limitless.
Forge could conceivably use his power to duplicate/imitate any or every other power imaginable. He should be creating devices that are likely beyond the ability of the likes of Reed Richards, Hank Pym, Hank McCoy, Tony Stark, and Dr. Doom and even Samuel Sterns to comprehend and make them scratch their heads in wonder.
Likewise, Cypher should be able to comprehend anything capable of being described with language. What if he studied the Godly language of "Allspeak"? What if he studied magic and the language of the black priest's.
I just think the writers are afraid to let these guys out of the box
Armor is mad cool but Dazzler is definitely my favorite underrated one. She tends to have some mainstream awareness (80s mainstay, TAS pilot, arcade game, etc) but always feels like she's getting memed on.
She was seen in Genosha in '97 soooooooo...eesh. >_>; Dunno what her future chances are in that show either.
I'd really like to see more of Husk and Chamber, both characters that were pretty reserved and pretty powerful... a lot of potential.
Have I missed anything with them?
At least Armor got more spotlight than Surge.
I really wish they brought back all those New X-Men kids and feature them more. The upcoming new book with Kitty and Emma features 3 new characters.
Darwin. I will never get over how Hollywood took the series that is about minorities and their struggles and made EVERY SINGLE GOOD GUY WHITE and the BHOM was multi cultural but evil. Like did anyone ever notice that the only non white person to be in more than one movie was storm
I've been thinking about this lately and it feels like it was a long time problem for X-Men even in the comics, leading all the way into the 2000s I think? Sad but I guess not surprising. We'll see if '97 works on this in later seasons; I wouldn't really say they have too much in S1, but screentime will be tough if big new pulls stay on the recognizable side (Colossus/Iceman/etc, a lot of those types I'm hoping for). Maybe more "outsider/fresh-face" vibes like Sunspot will help since he'll presumably graduate from that role in S2. The lack of rep is probably why they invented Spyke for Evolution...basically just took Marrow and race/gender swapped. IIRC he had just as much focus as the other mains, which was good.
I know I'm not that up on charas from the 2010s on but like, with my knowledge I really struggle to think of a lot of black X-charas other than Storm and Bishop. I know of Darwin, I think Synch was a GenXer and there was M/Monet too...I have less trouble if I expand recollection to other nationalities but African/African-American in X-charas is tough. (On a lookup I'm reminded of Cecilia Reyes, was literally just talking about her too elsewhere, but dang she ain't done much that I know of after OZT).
Again, hopefully it's gotten a lot better. On lookup it seems like it has a bit?
Same. But if not Armor, then Boom-Boom.
Tabitha š
Boomer!!! I wish we saw more of her.
Gimme X-Terminators vol 2.
I feel like sheās a victim of the popularity of Gambit and Jubilee. Itās hard to consistently find room for āgirl that blows stuff upā when you have more high profile characters that do mostly the same thing
Came here to say this.
Chamber
Chamber is a good choice. I started to read Gen X for the first time last year. He's very cool.
He had such a brief bump in the early 2000s and then got Decimated and thrown into the background since. The last GenX series should've been 100 more issues because that generation and the Academy X kids need their time to shine.
Thatās the dude with the like weird fusion energy stuff around his mouth right ?
It's psionic flame. His body doesn't have a mouth, neck, or chest. Almost like his psionic form uses what's left of his organic body as a sort of meat suit. He's a bit bizarre, which was immediately what drew me to the character.
Academy x kids, particularly Mercury
Great design
Lots of good characters there they still could use and should. Rockslide, Anole, Surge, Mercury, Dust, Elixir, Prodigy, and Hellion all have a lot of good potential for future stories to tell.
Prodigy is doing pretty well all things considered, he's not like an A lister who's always somewhere but he also tends to show up more than any of the others except for Laura and Pixie, and the Cuckoos if they count. I really hope we see some more popping up, maybe some will be in X-Factor. And NYX seems very focused on their generation so I'm looking forward to it, although I've heard some bad things about the writers.
Not all of them, but I wish they'd be getting more spotlight. There were some really great characters there!
I need more of that whole Hellions team, please
Got that right. Theyāve been pushed into the background for too long.
Does Laura even remember Mercury?
I feel like Banshee is the mascot of underrated X-Men characters. Heās got a lot going for him, a lot of ongoing potential, but it seems like what writers most like to do with him is kill him in increasingly brutal ways.

Without even mentioning Gambit and Magneto although Magneto seems to be alive I think we've lost X-men member Magneto.
I love him in Generation X. Having him on a team with Emma would be really fun; loved that dynamic
Haha true true
His daughter has also gotten pretty poor treatment.
Is Siren his daughter or unrelated?
She's his daughter, assuming they haven't retconned it...still mad about the retcon with Wanda and Pietro not being Magneto's kids.
Thats what I thought but thats exactly why i never know these days.
I really wish these writers would just write new stories with the characters rather than constantly rewriting the past. Admittedly I never read those issues, but that whole huge retcon with Vulcan sounded really dumb to me too \*shrug\*

Cipher, but I guess he's not really underrated except in a fight. I'm just a huge language nerd and I'd love to have his ability.
F^#* yeah!! I love Cypher!! Ever since Necrosha when he broke the virus language sick!! At one point a someone made him good at fighting becuase he cause read the movement like a language haha. They didn't keep that though
He should study more those ābody languageā moves and use them in battle
His Cassandra Cain period.
Itās a shame readers hated him back in the day. He had a down to earth everyman quality in the first New Mutants book that I found endearing.
you obviously mean Cypher aka Douglas Ramsay. for a second i thought you meant Cipher aka Alisa Tager LOL.
Shatterstar and Longshot.
Pixie Mercury Dust Dr Nemesis Armor
DUST
Dust is cool AF and it's neat that she got a big cameo in Wolverine and the X-Men, IIRC. Dunno' if she'll make it into '97 at all (there's other majors that take priority, like Colossus/Iceman/friggin SHADOWCAT). I was under the impression she kept getting used in more modern years, but dang I guess not
Legion. It seems like only Spurrier knows how to write him
DosenƦt he have his own show?
I recommend his weird and wonderful TV show, but it changes a lot about his character. Still I can think of one change that is a vast improvement from the comics.
Spurrier set a high bar for legion
Strong Guy and Warpath.
Justice for my boi Guido
Seeing him on screen last Wednesday made me sit up and say āitās StrongGuy!ā
Kid Apocalypse. I love the idea of an inverse Apocalypse that doesn't seek war, but instead peace.
Evan Sabahnur?
My girl husk.
Letās just keep her away from creepy relationships with older men. (Angel, Toad)
Husk's power is absolutely wild, very 90s without being too over the top, plus she's kin with cool boy Cannonball. Prolly my favorite GenXer; wish the last thing I'd heard about her hadn't been the weird Angel thing.
Dazzler.Ā

Rusty and Skids!
Prodigy is super underrated!! I like Karma cause she viet š»š³
I really like Dust and Mercury.
Rockslide
Had to scroll too far for this one. Needs more love and time in the comics.
Absolutely agree!!!!!
Hopefully one day heāll see a prominent use. I personally think heād have a fun and interesting run as a Cyttorak host.
Boom-Boom and Maggott are my top 2. After that I love any of the Academy X kids, but I've got a soft spot for Anole in particular.
Forget-me-not
Who?
Who what?
Blindfold
Cannonball Is Cannonball underrated?
my same answer and question hahaha
Sage. She deserves at least a miniseries.
Marrow! She was one of my favorite characters to play as in the old Marvel vs Capcom
Forge. Dudeās Mutant power is actually pretty interesting (at least to me it is) and he also has some magical abilities which is cool (honorable mention is Dazzler but she was one of the playable characters in the arcade game so she has a little more attention)
Hell yeah!! I love Forge he be building shit he doesn't even understand
Hmm... fun question, I have lots. Angel/Archangel (Warren Worthington III).

I really want to see X-Statix interact with the mainstream X-Men. Doop did, so why not Mr. Sensitive or Dead Girl? It would also be awesome to see the team interact with their revived teammates from Krakoa.
Beak. His real superpower is that he loves his girlfriend more than anything in the world. More than anything.
For me it's Julian Keller, a.k.a. Hellion, voted "Most likely to be an X-man" in Academy X. A grim reminder for folks who peaked at high school.
Jubilee
Jubilee. <3
Probably armor, like you haha
I love Armor as well and is Monet considered underrated anymore?
Monet?
Sorry typo! Yes Monet haha
I love Random.
Honey Badger! And Boomer.
Legion by far
#Glob
Kid Omega
Warlock
Marrow. She pulls bone weapons out of herself.
SKINĀ
My God, thereās too many. I just love all my mutants. I love Madrox, but he got to lead a long running series so I dunno if he counts. Hellion will always be my boy. Iām excited to see more Surge. I feel you!! I got sick x-cited reading other peoples favs. I keep thinking, "f^#* yeah!! That character is cool too!"
Chamber for me. been obsessed with him since I was a kid thanks to Uncanny X Men. poor guy had it rough
Armor and then dani moonstar
Kid omega
Trinary
Definitely wild child but actual member of X-men would be warpath
Strong guy, glob, cannonball, marrow
Iām here all day for ForgetMeNot! Everyone else might forget you but I never will!
Sunspot if he doesnt count then Pixie
# Forget Me Not. I think heās the best last-minute assassin. Enemies forget heās in the fight until itās too late š
Blink
Husk, I love husk
Dani Moonstar Chamber and Blink Armor and Hellion
Forgot to mention Glob His redemption in new mutants 12 when he went after DOX with Dani and illyana where he revealed his past with his terrible father.
X-23/Laura Kinney
Until recently Synch, but once they finally brought him back writers have acknowledged he's the GOAT. Jubilee is written terribly and deserves a chance to grow. She's the weakest omega which makes no sense since she was one of the youngest X-Men when she started and had great teachers and mentors. She should be throwing nuclear blast explosions by now.
Are you reading the current Ultimate X-Men? Cuz you might wanna if youāre not!
Hard to be underrated when an entire X-men book is being built around her
I really enjoy Rasputin IV, but she's written inconsistently and isn't well fleshed out. I don't think she needs a solo series, just better characterisation where she doesn't flip to being really violent at random (beating Thing when he just asks to talk) or suddenly flying using telepathy when Sinister made lack of flight a conscious weakness of hers.
Cipher (Alisa Tager) Invisibility + intangibility? The stories that could unfold are endless.
Mimic has so much more potential than he has been allowed to show off in the series. I think Exiles showed that
Wallflower. She was such an interesting character, like, what happens when you are born with a power seen as evil, to literally control others feelings, but you're a very kind person who doesn't want that. My opinion is that she should have survived the decimation, instead of Elixir.
Darwin. Too bad they sideline strong characters.Ā
Armor is my first thought as well-- she was the only good thing about the 2011 X-Men anime.
Darwin
I am a huge fan of the Mimic. Exiles was amazing, I liked his original appearance, enjoyed him in Excalibur, and liked dark X-men. At this rate, I think I got 5-10 years before I see him again
Armour my gurl. Pov of the 00's-10's,Kitty the 80's, Jublliee the 90's.
Boom-Boom has already been mentioned, so I think I'm going to give a shout-out to Broo.
Mondo.
Does Rachel count as underrated? She's the best summers kid by a long shot.
I think totally counts. We all know Cable the favorite chuld
Which is weird because he's so very 90s and much of his backstory is very repetitive with Rachel. (Both being time displaced kids) But it causes him to get adapted more and Rachel to get left in the dust.
Just reread Academy X so Iām a big fan or Prodigy, Surge, and Mercury. Wish more was done with Icarus (Cannonballās brother).
True, they couldāve included a lot of characters of colour as part of the First Class cast, like Sunfire or Dust or even Thunderbird and have him be killed be Shaw as a nod to his early death in the comics.

Isnāt she in a new comic series?
Kevin Mactaggert. Seeing his episode in the 90s cartoon was genuinely scary to me. His powers can easily rival Wandaās.
It's always Hellion
Isn't she the star of Ultimate X-Men now?
And they changing her up
Longshot.
Same here, but Iāve been a fan of hers since the Astonishing X-Men. Itās honestly a crime sheās so unrecognized.
Longshot
Danger or the Doctor who wears all white and has a robo fetish
Husk!
Kinda frustrating how MCU Ms. Marvel's powers are essentially an amalgamation of Armor and Quasar.
Night crawler
Havok and Jubilee.
