Noone in the federation understood what those upstart primates meant with that warning. Then one federation spy found a warehouse named "Gustav's Gartenhäusl" filled with thirty artillery cannons, all 80 centimeter caliber, all aimed at their own fixed portal gate.
Imagine firing a megawatt laser through a one-sided portal, into a second portal, and back out the one-sided portal so the beam power just builds up. You could do unbelievable things by charging the beam for a few minutes, and then releasing the whole thing as a single pulse by redirecting the output portal to the "muzzle" of a "handgun".
The words "filamentation" and "un-forked bolt of lightning" and "overpenetration" all spring to mind~! Except that the beginning of the pulse is gonna create an opaque plasma at the surface of your target, deposit all the megajoules into the plasma, and a tiny "nuclear" explosion is going to be the primary damage mechanism rather than burning a hole through your target.
I say "nuclear" because the peak intensity of the blast will exceed all theoretical limits for chemical explosives, and within maybe 10 cm of the point of impact, the radiation density and pressures will be more akin to a nuclear explosion than a chemical one. At the point of impact itself, there __will be no temperature,__ because temperature itself represents *an equilibrium state,* and at no point during this … phenomenon … will there ever exist any stable equilibrium. Only after, when the tank has been turned to _modern art_ and the pieces are raining will there exist an equilibrium, and even _that_ will be rapidly changing.

This arguably is where the concept of "negative temperature" comes into play, because we are definitely filling all of the highest-energy states first. (BTW, "infinite" temperature is basically the middle of the range; the hottest possible temperature is just short of absolute zero on the negative side.)
