Alien Private: Huh... Captain? We discovered a frozen world. Alien Captain: Frozen, you say? AP: Yes sir. It's effectively covered in snow, except for the ecuator, but even there's a little chilly. AC: It's rather large for a terrestrial planet, isn't it? AP: Sir, we're getting new scans. This is effevtively a Deathworld! It's got an atmosphere capable of supporting life! But... its oxygen levels are so low... and its nitrogen and argon are rather high. Also.... An unholy ammouny of CO2.... AC: CO2? Was there volcanic activity that plunged the world into this frozen state? AP: We can't tell. The planet certainly harbors life. It's got amonia and other organic compounds. Although, considering its frozen state, we believe it only supports really resilient microbes that breathe CO2 and produce oxygen... And probably some acquatic life under the ice. AC: So... This world would be a class 13-14 Deathworld. AP: Most certainly a class 14-15. I can also spot a monstruous storm.... Its wind speed is... Is impossible. The temperature higher in the atmosphere turns nitrogen from gas to liquid and back to gas....... In some cases, it might start raining liquid nitrogen..... AC: And you said there's life?! AP: Most certainly in the oceans. But we'll conduct a surface scan too. *A day later, the alien commander was enjoying his time. He remembered when he was chosen for this exploratory mission. And in all truth, he hated it. This area of the galaxy contains an unknown energy field that effectively stops all forms of communication and FTL travel, which means that anything within can't communicate with the galaxy at large, can't even send quantum tunneling signals, as the seemingly esoteric energies block all quantum tunneling. This also means that common FTL through spacial hyperlanes is effevtively blocked, and only through recent space-time folding and warping that they could make the universe around the ship move them to their destination, like riding a wave on water. The commander hated the prospect of not being in contact with his friends back on Farah, and he most dearly missed his mate...* AP: COMMANDER!! AC: *startled falls with his chair* AGHH!! PRIVATE! WHAT'S THE MEANING OF THIS?! AP: I.. I'm sorry commander, but it's urgent! AC: Go on.... *he pulls himself up with the desk and puts his chair back* AP: There's... There's sentient life on the surface!! AC: WHAT?! AP: I have reads of artificial constructions on the surface, all build with the purpose of preserving heat around a central cylindrical heat generator. Within those settlements there are various life forms, one sentient most certainly, the other probably farmed for sustenence. AC: No.... AP: Commander, It's 100% confirmed.... That's a deathworld species.... A hyperdeathworld species... And considering the storm's trajectory... They've survived it too... AC: ....How advanced are those horrors...? AP: Rather.... primitive, thankfully. But it's not for a lack of inteligence or ingenuity, in fact, they're rather ingenious. Some settlements even have artificial robotic constructs, with no electricity! AC: ...HOW?! AP: Our researchers are studying this very phenomenon, but it's soley using steam and probably some analog systems. AC: Are they dangerous...? AP: Most of their societies are... Rather barbaric. It's mostly split into two. Highly oppresive dictators or very oppresive religious figures. But, there are some instances of revolutions against the oppresive governments, and very few governemnts which seek to work for the people, while not democratic, mostly an oligarchy, but still... More lenient than the other barbaric systems... AC: They're barely surviving I reckon... AP: No... In fact, they're thriving... We have other records that this world has only recently become in this state... Volcanoes, paired with the primitive atmosphere noxious polutants from industry.... AC: ... Abduct some for study. With some luck, we might tame such a deathworld species. AP: Uhm... Commander, such species can break rocks with just a very rudimentary stick with a pointy metal on top. One of them can also very much punch a hole into us with a medium punch... AC: Deathworlders.... AP: We might need to consider them a tier upwards... Hyperdeathworlders.... AC: .... No, it's settled. This species might be the key to deal with exploring other deathworlds, if such a hyperdeathworld can be tamed and put in our service, we'd revieve promotions and rewards that could lead us living a luxurious life. AP: ... I can't disagree with that... But death... Might be a possibility too.... AC: I know, private.... AP: Alright. I'll start preparing the cells... We'll need those cages be made out of stainless steel... AC: By the gods, that's what it takes to stop them? Not even simple iron?? AP: I'm afraid not sir, while iron might be good, there are a few individuals who, if prompted, and determined, can bend iron, besides, their skin secreets an oil that can rust iron, so it's just safer to go with stainless steel. AC: Their... skin.... Dear heavens... They can rust iron?? AP: It's a slow process, very slow, but it can happen. Besides, the added costs of stainless steel are neglijable. AC: Fine... got it. Prepare one cage only, we'll take these things slowly... and also, prepare the guards too... Just in case.... AP: ...... Just in case....... Yes.....

Maybe tempt them with food beforehand. Treat it like taming a \[Cat analogue, but with more of a love for food\]

I like this one, I hope you don't mind if I expound upon it. I would normally wait for permission but if I don't write it out now I probably never will xd I'll link to it below when I'm done

Ricckkuu

Yeah, it's fine. Although keep in mind that somewhere around the end I got a little lazy. But it's basically, humans from frostpunk universe, right after the great storm. I got my own prompt I try to find time to write, so it's fine.

Stomach acid has a PH on par with strong vinegar, sometimes even lower. Given time and a little persistence, that'll do for stainless steal.

Ricckkuu

Shit... would someone from the 1870s know that?

**Frostpunk** is a Video Game that proof the Medium it belongs to isn't just beyond capable to give birth to art but to create MasterPieces worthy of being displayed in museums. I highly recommend everyone give it a try.

chanchan05

Thanks for reminding me. I got free a while back and never gotten around to it.

H: Funnily enough, this is one of the very rare instances where we didn't act out of spite. Just greed and ignorance until it was too late. A: That...just makes it worse. H: On the bright side, we did learn from our mistakes. A: Your people have ruined seven planets! H: We did learn...eventually...I hope...

"Oh you xenos and your magical thinking! Nature spirit this, Avatar of Wossitsface that... No, it is called 'punitive geoforming' and it is, I assure you, a completely technological process. Also, no, we didn't use it on our homeworld, that's just the way it is."

Another_Ttrpg_guy

"Oooh, so mother nature needs a favor?! Well maybe she should of thought of that when she was besetting us with droughts and floods and poison monkeys. Nature started the fight for survival, and now she wants to quit because she's losing. Well I say hard cheese! -Monty Burns

A: I don't get it... Your planet's climate is unusually homogeneous. How long do you say your species has been sentient? H: Oh, a few thousands of years ago, if I remember my History classes correctly. A: But how did you develop like that? What did you feed upon? We can't see any kind of life, except for the plants you farm and the animals you breed. But neither the plants, nor the animals, *nor your species*, seem to have evolved to live underground! How is it. H: We adapted. A: Adapted from what? Your planet's atmosphere is ravaged, no living species can breath its atmosphere: CO2, volcanic ashes, methane, in mortal quantities for the meager life preserved in your underground cities, and the O2 levels are incredibly low for a planet with O2-based lifeforms only! How could a planet like this nurture life? H: It wasn't always like this, you know. The name we give to our planet is Earth. A: Maybe the translator struggles to keep with your language, but I don't see any true earth until deep below the surface. Everything is ice or naked rock. Or dust, if you can distinguish the one that is flying everywhere from the one that is on the ground. H: A century or two ago, we called it "the blue planet". Oceans weren't covered in ice, mountains and valleys were filled with trees and grass, and yes, earth was everywhere. A: So, what happened? How could it change so much? H: We did it. A: What?! H: Oh, at first we didn't do it on purpose. Conscious or unconscious ignorance, greed, disregard for life, for health, not learning from our past, we thrived on heavy industry and exploited people. We released so much gas in our atmosphere, we polluted the water so much, we killed the earth beneath our fields... eventually, we couldn't ignore it anymore: the temperatures were rising, so was the ocean, and the survival of our comfort was impossible. A: Yes, it happens from time to time to heavily industrial species, especially if FTL takes time to discover, and since you never did... But still, your climate is way too homogeneous, we should see variety, have different seasons, more chaotic winds, seismic activity... But none of it is happening, it's impossible if life appeared on this planet! H: All of that happened as well, I'm going there. So, we were killing ourselves slowly. And when we decided to stop, to do everything we could to survive as best as possible, it was already too late to do so without dire consequences. But we did nonetheless. We invented technologies, applied global consumption limitations, organised a joined effort to create as much forests, plankton, or everything else that we could. Depollute, recycle CO2, reuse as much as possible, ban everything non-renewable... It was chaotic for a few decades. Many died. But eventually, we reached a functioning society with shared values regarding our life with the environment. First time in our history.

A: And the world was already in this state, I guess? H: No. A: No? Then... H: Nature didn't see it that way. A: ... what do you mean? H: Mother Nature continued to try to kill us all. A: ... H: Diseases continued to appear. Storms, more gigantic each time. Electromagnetic storms, solar eruptions, things impossible to predict. Animals became more territorial, more aggressive. Insects became death threats. Tsunamis, earthquakes, lack of rain, lack of sun, everything declined. But it was declining way, way too rapidly. Scientists couldn't understand why. By their measures, everything we were doing to stop or slow those climate changes should have had an effect, even a tiny one. But nothing. The world became worse and worse for us each day. Countries died, lands became deserts, water drowned cities, famine ravaged every settlement... Nature was trying to kill us. There was no other explanation. No other reason. It was *us,* versus *it.* A: So... How did you survive? H: We fought back. A: ...How? H: We destroyed it. Released gas. Melted the ice. Cut down the trees. Ravaged the ocean. Acidified the rains. Exploded mountains. Created dozens of tsunamis, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes. Nuked everything. It had taken us decades to achieve a semblance of an ecological society ; but Humanity has always been great at destruction. It took us five years. In five years, the Earth was done. A: But... H: As you said, everything is now homogeneous. No more earthquakes. No more hurricanes. No more tsunamis. No more animals and insects to give us diseases. No more plants relying on facetious rains to feed us or starve us. Nothing but dust, ice, polluted water, and rocks. A: You... tried to kill yourselves along with our planet?... H: No. We knew we'd survive. We have metal, electricity, ingenuity, and determination. We made the underground cities in which we still live in, we developed an entire controlled ecosystem to sustain us, separated from the surface, we protected ourselves from the radiations and the dust, we learned how to live freely and as well as we could below ground. We just did what we always do. We survived. A: You... The concept of deathworlders is one of exaggeration, but to kill your own world and live within it, I... I cannot find another word to describe you... H: The world isn't dead. Everything we did, we did with calculations and purpose. A: Then why?! Why destroy everything that made your society, that made nature? Why erase almost all evolution, almost all life? Why make it so hard for yourselves to live?! H: What was destroying Humanity was the unpredictability of "natural disasters", of nature itself trying to kill us. We didn't know how to control anything about this chaotic thing. But nature is dead. A: ... H: And now, *we know.*
